You do not need to restart a Roku TV on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. Roku’s reviewed support guidance gives no routine reboot interval; it presents a system restart as a troubleshooting step when the device is frozen or unresponsive. If your TV works normally, there is no need to reboot it just for maintenance.
What counts as a Roku TV restart?
Turning a TV off with its remote or physical power button is not the same as a system restart. Roku describes a system restart as a distinct troubleshooting action, available through Settings or by briefly disconnecting power. Roku calls the Settings-based system restart the least invasive reset method and says it does not affect settings.
Restart from Settings
- On the Roku TV, open Settings > System > Power > System restart.
- If your TV does not show a Power submenu, skip it and select System restart under System.
Menu wording can vary by device and software version. Roku documents this method as a system restart, not a factory reset.

Restart by disconnecting power
Roku’s general system-restart instructions say to unplug the device for at least 10 seconds, then reconnect it. This is another way to perform a system restart; it is not a recommendation to unplug the TV on a recurring schedule.

When should you restart your Roku TV?
Use a system restart when the TV is frozen or unresponsive, rather than following an arbitrary calendar. Roku’s support guidance does not establish that regular preventive reboots improve performance or extend a Roku TV’s life.
Roku checks for software updates when the device powers on and randomly every 24–36 hours, then installs updates automatically. That interval describes update checks, not reboots or a suggested manual restart frequency. You can also check for updates manually in Settings. What if the TV keeps restarting or stays on the logo?
A TV that repeatedly restarts or remains stuck on the logo needs troubleshooting; restarting it more often is not the fix. Roku’s first step for this specific problem is different from its general system-restart instruction:
- Unplug the TV from power for 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power and turn the TV on.
- If it still will not recover, follow the recovery or reset instructions for your TV model. Contact Roku Support or the TV manufacturer if the problem persists.
The 60-second unplug step is for a TV caught in a restart loop or stuck at the logo; it is not a routine restart interval.

Restart, power off, and factory reset are different
- Power off and on: Uses the remote or physical power button. Roku says this is not the same as a system restart.
- System restart: A troubleshooting reboot from Settings or by disconnecting power. Roku describes the Settings method as the least invasive reset and says it does not affect settings.
- Factory reset or model-specific recovery: A deeper troubleshooting step, not routine maintenance. It may require setting up the TV again, so use it only when the model-specific recovery guidance calls for it.
