To change a picture’s width and height on a Mac, open it in Preview and choose Tools > Adjust Size. Keep Scale proportionally selected to preserve its shape. If you want a smaller file rather than different dimensions, use Preview’s Resample image and Resolution controls; to change the framing, use Photos’ crop tools.
How to resize a picture in Preview

Open the image in Preview. Use File > Open, or double-click the image in Finder or on the desktop. See Apple’s Preview getting-started guide for opening files.

If the toolbar is not visible, click Show Markup Toolbar. Then click Adjust Size.

Enter the desired width and height, choose a size from Fit into, or enter a percentage. Preview displays dimensions in the units shown in its dialog.

Leave Scale proportionally selected if the image should keep its original proportions. When you change one dimension, Preview adjusts the other. With a Fit into preset, the resulting image may be smaller in one dimension than the preset’s box so that it is not stretched.

Click OK, then save the image. To preserve the original, use File > Duplicate before making changes, or save a copy under a different name.

How to resize several pictures at once
Preview can apply a size adjustment to a group of images opened together. Display the pictures in the same Preview window, select the images in the sidebar, and choose Tools > Adjust Size. Enter the desired dimensions or percentage, keeping proportional scaling on when the pictures should retain their shapes. Confirm the adjustment and save the files.

Check that the selected images are the ones you intend to change before applying the adjustment. If you need to keep originals, duplicate the files first.
How to make an image file smaller
A smaller pixel width and height is not the same thing as a smaller file on disk. If storage or download size is the goal, open the image in Preview, choose Tools > Adjust Size, select Resample image, and enter a lower Resolution. Preview shows the resulting file size at the bottom of the dialog. Apple documents this method as a way to reduce disk usage or make an image quicker to download.

Resampling changes image data, so inspect the result at the size where it will be used. Lower resolution can reduce detail, especially when the picture is enlarged or printed. Save a copy if you may need the original quality.

Use cropping when you want to remove unwanted areas, reframe the subject, or fit a particular aspect ratio—not simply set exact pixel dimensions. In Photos, open the picture and choose Edit > Crop; adjust the crop area or select a preset ratio such as square, 4:5, or 16:9. Apple’s Photos guide to cropping and reframing explains those controls.

For an exact width and height, use Preview’s Adjust Size. For composition or aspect ratio, crop in Photos; cropping removes parts of the picture rather than resizing the full image.
