Choose Resident Evil if you want combat, weapons, resource management, puzzles, exploration, and a connected survival-horror canon. Choose Silent Hill if you want psychological terror, oppressive atmosphere, symbolism, and emotionally difficult choices. That distinction is an editorial reading of how Capcom and Konami describe their series; individual games vary considerably. In 2026, the clearest new starting points are Resident Evil Requiem and SILENT HILL f, while the 1996 and 1999 originals remain useful historical introductions.

What makes Resident Evil the better fit

A survival-horror system built around decisions

Capcom describes Resident Evil as survival horror organized around fear and horror, environmental exploration, puzzle-solving, resource management and combat against enemies. Producer Masachika Kawata and director Kiyohiko Nakanishi identify those elements as the series’ pillars in a developer interview. The important practical consequence is that fear is often tied to a decision: spend ammunition now, risk passing an enemy, search a room for supplies, or carry an item that may be needed later.

That structure gives Resident Evil a particularly tactile form of tension. A locked route, an unfamiliar room and a limited inventory are not merely atmosphere; they are problems you solve with observation and planning. The series can be frightening, but it also gives you tools, weapons and a growing understanding of the space. If you enjoy learning a map, recognizing a threat and improving your route on a second attempt, Resident Evil is the more natural match.

Combat is a major part of the identity

Every installment sets its own pace, yet the franchise consistently treats combat as one of its defining systems. Weapons and other items are used to survive dangerous situations, and the player must judge whether an encounter is worth the cost. This is different from an action game in which ammunition and healing are effectively unlimited: Resident Evil’s combat is strongest when every shot has an opportunity cost.

Resident Evil Requiem Amazon Exclusive Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
  • Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
  • For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
  • An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
  • Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.

The series also spans several control and camera traditions. Historical entries establish classic survival-horror foundations, while later games use first-person or third-person perspectives and can lean more heavily toward action. That range means “Resident Evil” does not describe one fixed level of intensity. A player who dislikes constant firefights can choose a more exploratory or horror-focused entry, while a player who wants direct weapon handling can choose a combat-forward one.

Puzzles and connected world-building

Resident Evil’s puzzles are usually integrated into physical spaces: keys, mechanisms, documents, rooms and routes connect the environment into a navigable problem. Solving one obstacle can open a shortcut or reveal a previously inaccessible area. The appeal is cumulative: you are not only progressing the story but also building a mental model of the location.

Unlike a one-off anthology, Resident Evil has a large connected canon. Events, organizations and recurring figures create a sense of historical continuity across games, even as viewpoint, setting and tone change. That continuity rewards players who like to trace a universe over time, but it can also make the franchise look intimidating. You do not need to begin with every earlier title; a modern mainline game can function as an accessible entry point, and you can then move backward if the world interests you.

What makes Silent Hill the better fit

Psychological horror rather than a combat checklist

Konami describes Silent Hill as a franchise known for psychological storytelling, eerie atmosphere, innovative gameplay and deep narrative themes. Its fear often comes from uncertainty about what a place means, what a character remembers and how the environment reflects inner conflict. You may still face creatures and physical danger, but the central question is frequently interpretive: why does this image, sound or transformation exist, and what does it reveal about the person involved?

This makes Silent Hill a stronger choice for players who want horror to linger after a scene ends. Fog, sound design, visual motifs and environmental changes can do more work than a large number of enemies. The series’ most effective tension is sustained unease rather than a sequence of firefights, and the emotional material can be difficult by design.

Symbolism, trauma and personal choices

Silent Hill stories commonly place identity, guilt, trauma and difficult personal choices at the center of the experience. The meaning of an event may remain deliberately ambiguous, and the player is invited to connect recurring images or locations rather than receive every answer directly. If you prefer a clearly explained plot with a visible chain of objectives, this approach can feel opaque. If you enjoy discussing interpretations and revisiting scenes for hidden implications, it is a major strength.

  • FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
  • DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
  • A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

The latest entry, SILENT HILL f, applies that identity to a new setting. Konami places high-school student Shimizu Hinako in 1960s Japan, in the fog-covered town of Ebisugaoka. She confronts creatures, mysteries, traumatic decisions and a disturbing transformation. The publisher describes the game as psychological horror shaped by Japanese folklore and says choices influence Hinako’s fate.

How the two series differ on the questions players actually ask

Which series has more intense combat?

Resident Evil. Combat and weapon handling are explicit parts of Capcom’s stated design pillars, and resource management makes each encounter consequential. Silent Hill can include combat, but its defining appeal is psychological pressure and atmosphere rather than a sustained weapons loop. That does not make Silent Hill automatically easier: uncertainty and emotional discomfort can be more demanding than a difficult fight.

Which series is scarier?

There is no objective winner because the fear mechanisms are different. Resident Evil is more likely to frighten you through an immediate threat, a dangerous room, a limited supply or the need to commit to a tactical choice. Silent Hill is more likely to unsettle you through implication, sound, symbolism, isolation and the possibility that the environment is expressing a character’s trauma.

Choose Resident Evil if the anticipation of an encounter is what scares you. Choose Silent Hill if being unable to fully explain what you are seeing is what scares you. Players sensitive to graphic violence should check the rating and content description for the specific installment; neither franchise has one uniform intensity level.

Which has more resource pressure?

Resource management is a core Resident Evil concern. Ammunition, healing items and inventory decisions can determine whether you fight, evade or search for another route. Capcom explicitly lists resource management among the series’ pillars.

Silent Hill’s pressure is more often psychological and investigative. The exact amount of combat, item scarcity and puzzle complexity changes from game to game, so it is not accurate to treat every Silent Hill title as resource-free. The distinction is that supplies are usually not the central identity of the franchise in the way they are for Resident Evil.

  • TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
  • RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

Which series has better puzzles and exploration?

Resident Evil is the safer recommendation if you want puzzles to be a recurring structural system. Its environments are designed around locked routes, item use, shortcuts and backtracking, and the process of understanding a location is part of the challenge.

Silent Hill also uses exploration to expose mystery and meaning, but its puzzles and progression can be more closely tied to the story’s symbolism. The satisfaction is less about mastering a survival route and more about interpreting clues within an unsettling place. Neither approach is universally better; they serve different kinds of curiosity.

Which series is more psychologically focused?

Silent Hill. Konami explicitly emphasizes psychological storytelling and deep narrative themes, and the franchise is associated with trauma, identity, guilt and symbolic environments. Resident Evil can include personal stakes and unsettling ideas, but its published design description places equal weight on exploration, puzzles, resource management and combat.

Which series has the clearer story?

Resident Evil generally offers a more externally legible framework: organizations, incidents, locations and recurring history connect the games into a broad canon. Silent Hill more often leaves room for interpretation and uses ambiguity as part of the experience. “Clearer” is therefore a preference, not a quality score. Choose Resident Evil for continuity you can map; choose Silent Hill for meaning you can debate.

Where to start in 2026

Start with Resident Evil Requiem for the current Capcom experience

Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth main installment. Capcom released it on February 27, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The game retains combat, exploration and puzzle-solving, and it allows players to switch between first-person and third-person perspectives. That perspective choice makes it a practical starting point for readers deciding how much immersion or character visibility they prefer.

Capcom reported more than 170 million cumulative Resident Evil game units sold as of March 31, 2025. A later Capcom report said Requiem exceeded 6 million units worldwide in 2026. Those figures describe the scale of the franchise and the performance of this release; they do not establish that it is the best game for every player.

This is the straightforward choice if you want a current Silent Hill release rather than an older game, and if a self-contained setting and personal story matter more to you than a large connected canon.

Use the originals to understand each series’ foundation

The original Resident Evil from 1996 establishes Capcom’s survival-horror foundation. The original Silent Hill from 1999 establishes Konami’s psychological and atmospheric identity. Starting with both is useful when your goal is historical context, but modern entries are more convenient if you want current controls, platforms and presentation.

A decision guide based on your play style

Choose Resident Evil if you enjoy planning under pressure

  • You want weapons to be meaningful rather than decorative.
  • You enjoy deciding whether to fight, evade or conserve supplies.
  • You like maps with locked doors, backtracking and shortcuts.
  • You want puzzles integrated into exploration.
  • You prefer a connected universe with recurring history.
  • You want to move between classic, first-person and third-person forms of survival horror.

Choose Silent Hill if you enjoy interpretation and atmosphere

  • You want psychological horror and sustained unease instead of constant action.
  • You pay close attention to sound, fog, visual motifs and environmental changes.
  • You are comfortable with stories about trauma, identity, guilt and difficult choices.
  • You prefer a more self-contained or interpretive experience.
  • You enjoy discussing what an image or event means rather than receiving one definitive explanation.
  • You want folklore and personal symbolism to shape the setting.

If you want both

Play Resident Evil Requiem first if you want to learn the language of survival-horror systems, then try SILENT HILL f for a contrasting psychological approach. Reverse that order if atmosphere and narrative ambiguity are your main interests and you want combat to remain secondary. Pair either modern title with its respective 1996 or 1999 original when you want to see how the franchise’s design identity began.

Common mistakes when choosing between them

Assuming every Resident Evil game is an action game

The series has changed tone and camera style over time. Capcom’s description still centers survival-horror pillars, but individual entries can emphasize action, classic exploration or different perspectives. Use the specific game’s design and available difficulty options as your guide rather than judging the entire franchise by one installment.

Assuming every Silent Hill game is identical

Silent Hill’s shared identity is psychological storytelling and atmosphere, not a single formula for combat, puzzles or structure. SILENT HILL f, for example, moves the setting to 1960s Japan and builds its story around Hinako, folklore and choices. Expect variation while looking for the recurring emphasis on mood and thematic depth.

Choosing by “scarier” as if fear were one measurement

Immediate danger and scarce ammunition produce a different reaction from symbolic, emotionally difficult horror. Decide which kind of discomfort you want before comparing review scores or difficulty claims. A player who dislikes resource pressure may find Resident Evil stressful but enjoy Silent Hill; a player who dislikes ambiguity may have the opposite experience.

Bottom line: which series should you play?

Resident Evil is the better first choice for a player who wants an interactive survival system: weapons, resource decisions, environmental puzzles, exploration and a canon that connects many games. In 2026, Resident Evil Requiem is the current entry, with first- and third-person options on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Silent Hill is the better first choice for a player who wants psychological storytelling to lead: fog, sound, symbolism, trauma, identity and choices that resist easy answers. In 2026, SILENT HILL f is the current entry, set in 1960s Japan and available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and major PC storefronts.

If you are still undecided, ask one question: do you want fear to come mainly from managing a dangerous situation, or from trying to understand what the situation means? The first answer points to Resident Evil; the second points to Silent Hill.
