Start with Resident Evil 2 if you are new to these games. It introduces Leon S. Kennedy and the Raccoon City outbreak, giving you the clearest entry point before Resident Evil 4, which follows Leon six years later. Pick Resident Evil 3 first if Jill Valentine and her struggle to survive Nemesis are the main attraction, or begin with Resident Evil 4 if its later rescue mission appeals more than the earlier outbreak story. That order is a practical recommendation based on the official plot summaries, not a required sequence.
What the Switch 2 “trilogy” includes
The announced group consists of the remakes of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4. “Trilogy” is a convenient name for these three related releases; the announcements establish three titles, not a single bundled game or a required three-part campaign.
Capcom announced a digital release date of October 16, 2026. As of October 13, 2026, that date is three days away, so the games are upcoming rather than already released. Capcom France has also announced boxed editions for January 29, 2027. These are announced dates; check the listing for your country before planning a purchase, since release timing and formats can vary by territory.
The listed editions are not presented under one consistent subtitle. Nintendo UK lists Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition; Capcom identifies Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition; and the cited Switch 2 materials list Resident Evil 3 without a comparable Deluxe or Gold subtitle. Those names alone do not establish the contents of each edition. Check the regional product page for the included content and format before choosing between listings.

Why Resident Evil 2 is the best default first game
It introduces the shared outbreak setting
Resident Evil 2 places Leon and Claire in Raccoon City during a biological disaster. That makes it the most direct place to begin if you want to enter this group through the outbreak itself rather than through its aftermath. The official summaries do not describe a mandatory order, but they do make the context clear: Resident Evil 3 also concerns the Raccoon City Incident, while Resident Evil 4 takes place years later.
It sets up Leon’s later appearance
Leon is one of the two central characters in Resident Evil 2 and the protagonist of Resident Evil 4. Starting with the earlier story gives you the simplest way to follow his place in this three-game selection before arriving at his later assignment. This is a recommendation about story orientation, not a claim that you need prior knowledge to understand Resident Evil 4.

It gives a newcomer a useful reference point
Once you know the outbreak setting and the characters introduced in the second game, you can decide whether you want to stay with the Raccoon City events through Jill’s story or move ahead to Leon’s mission in Europe. That makes Resident Evil 2 a flexible starting point even if you are not yet sure which of the three premises appeals most.
Choose Resident Evil 3 first if Jill and Nemesis are the draw
Resident Evil 3 shifts the focus to Jill Valentine, whom the official listing describes as a survivor of S.T.A.R.S. Its setup follows her through the beginning and end of the Raccoon City Incident while Nemesis pursues her. If that character and pursuit are what prompted your interest, there is no need to treat Resident Evil 2 as an entry requirement.
Choose Resident Evil 2 first instead if you want the outbreak context before seeing another perspective on the same city incident. The summaries establish a shared setting and incident, but they do not specify every event’s exact sequence relative to the other game. The safest way to describe the relationship is that the stories concern the Raccoon City Incident, with Resident Evil 3 explicitly spanning its beginning and end—not that the available listings prescribe a precise play order.

Choose Resident Evil 4 first if you want Leon’s later mission
Resident Evil 4 is set six years after the Raccoon City Incident. Leon is sent to rescue the U.S. president’s daughter from a European village, a premise that takes the story away from the Raccoon City setting and into a later assignment. If this is the situation you most want to play, beginning here is a valid preference-based choice.
For someone following Leon across this selection, playing Resident Evil 2 before Resident Evil 4 gives the clearest progression from his introduction to the later mission. The six-year gap is part of the official setup; it does not make the earlier game a prerequisite stated by Capcom. A player who prefers the rescue premise can start with the fourth game without treating the chronology as an obstacle.
Pick an order that matches what you care about
If you want the clearest newcomer route
- Start with Resident Evil 2 for Leon and Claire’s Raccoon City outbreak story.
- Continue with Resident Evil 3 if you want Jill’s perspective on the Raccoon City Incident.
- Play Resident Evil 4 for Leon’s mission six years after that incident.

If Jill is your priority
- Begin with Resident Evil 3 to follow Jill and the Nemesis pursuit.
- Choose Resident Evil 2 if you want the other Raccoon City story and its introduction to Leon and Claire.
- Move to Resident Evil 4 for Leon’s later story.
This option puts your preferred protagonist first. The other games remain available as additional perspectives and a later chapter in Leon’s story.
If you only want Leon’s story in this group
- Play Resident Evil 2 first to meet Leon during the Raccoon City outbreak.
- Follow with Resident Evil 4, set six years after the incident.
Resident Evil 3 is centered on Jill rather than Leon, so it is not necessary for this two-game route based on the official summaries. You can add it if you want to explore the other Raccoon City perspective.

The same caution applies to edition value. The words “Deluxe” and “Gold” appear in the identified edition names, but the cited announcements do not provide a comparable list of included extras. A title’s edition label is not enough to decide whether its additional content is worthwhile. Review the current regional listing for the exact contents and format rather than assuming the editions match.
Release timing and edition checks before buying
Capcom announced digital availability for October 16, 2026, and Capcom France announced boxed editions for January 29, 2027.
