Resident Evil Requiem requires a Windows 11 64-bit PC, DirectX 12, 16 GB of RAM and an SSD. Steam lists a desktop GTX 1660 6GB or Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB with a Core i5-8500 or Ryzen 5 3500 for its 1080p/30fps minimum target, using upscaling from 640p. Its recommended 1080p/60fps target uses a Core i7-8700 or Ryzen 5 5500 with an RTX 2060 Super 8GB or RX 6600 8GB, upscaled from 720p. Those are targets rather than guarantees: demanding scenes can reduce frame rate, and Capcom does not guarantee normal operation on integrated graphics or many laptop GPUs.

Resident Evil Requiem PC requirements at a glance

Steam publishes two hardware tiers. Both require Windows 11 (64-bit), DirectX 12, 16 GB of system memory and an SSD. The resolution figures are the game’s internal render resolutions before upscaling, not the output resolution shown on a 1080p monitor.

Requirement Minimum tier Recommended tier
Operating system Windows 11, 64-bit
Graphics API DirectX 12
Memory 16 GB RAM
Storage SSD required
Processor Intel Core i5-8500 or AMD Ryzen 5 3500 Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 5500
Graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 with 6 GB VRAM or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT with 8 GB VRAM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super with 8 GB VRAM or AMD Radeon RX 6600 with 8 GB VRAM
Steam’s target output 1080p at 30fps, upscaled from a 640p native render resolution 1080p at 60fps, upscaled from a 720p native render resolution
High-load behavior Frame rate may drop when the game encounters heavy processing loads

These figures are the Windows PC specifications shown by Valve/Steam in 2026. They describe intended performance levels, not a promise that every scene, driver version or PC configuration will hold the target frame rate.

What the two tiers actually mean

Minimum is a 30fps, upscaled experience

The minimum tier is designed around 1080p output at 30 frames per second. The game renders internally at 640p and uses upscaling to reach the display resolution. That lowers the amount of work the GPU performs, but it also means the image can look softer than a native 1080p render, especially in motion or in areas with fine detail.

  • IT’S A POWER MOVE: Save the power for your performance; Get power efficiency all while experiencing up to 50% improved performance per watt over the 980 PRO; It makes every move more effective with less consumption

The 30fps description is a target for typical play, not a frame-time guarantee. Steam explicitly warns that performance can fall during high processing loads. A PC that technically matches the minimum parts can therefore need the lowest quality preset, a frame-rate cap, or a lower display resolution in the most demanding scenes.

Recommended is a 60fps, upscaled experience

The recommended tier is aimed at 1080p output at 60fps while rendering internally at 720p. It provides more CPU and GPU headroom than the minimum tier, but the same high-load warning applies. A recommended-class PC should be treated as the sensible starting point for a smoother 60fps objective, not as evidence that every quality option will remain at its maximum.

Why an SSD is a requirement

An SSD is required in both tiers rather than merely suggested. Install the game on an SSD with adequate free space and keep the drive from becoming nearly full. Solid-state storage cannot make an underpowered GPU faster, but it is part of the supported configuration and helps the game access its data without the mechanical-drive delays that can aggravate loading and streaming problems.

Compatibility cautions for integrated and laptop graphics

Integrated graphics and shared VRAM

Capcom states that “Normal game operations with an onboard graphics card and other devices that share VRAM with the main memory are not guaranteed.” Integrated graphics use system memory instead of having dedicated video memory, so a PC can appear to meet the RAM number while still lacking the graphics bandwidth and VRAM behavior expected by the listed desktop cards. Treat the minimum GPU as a dedicated desktop-GPU reference, not as a promise for an integrated chipset.

Mobile GPUs are not equivalent to desktop cards

Capcom also warns that the game may not run properly on mobile GPUs even when a laptop’s nominal specification matches the minimum or recommended label. Its explanation is that mobile GPU performance can drop greatly compared with regular GPUs. Laptop model names can therefore be misleading: check the exact mobile GPU, its power limit and the manufacturer’s cooling design rather than comparing only the family name with a desktop card.

Practical laptop check

  • Confirm that the laptop has a discrete GPU rather than relying on integrated graphics.
  • Connect the charger before launching; battery mode can reduce CPU and GPU power.
  • Use the manufacturer’s performance or high-power mode when available, while keeping temperatures under control.
  • In Windows Graphics settings, assign the game’s executable, re9.exe, to the high-performance GPU.

How to check whether your PC can run the game

  1. Identify the operating system. Open Settings → System → About and confirm Windows 11, 64-bit. A 32-bit installation or an older Windows release is outside the listed configuration.
  2. Check the processor and memory. In the same About page, note the CPU model and installed RAM. Compare the model, not just its advertised clock speed, with the appropriate Steam tier.
  3. Identify the active GPU. Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display or Task Manager → Performance → GPU. On a laptop, check which adapter is used when the game runs; the integrated adapter may be listed first even when a discrete GPU is installed.
  4. Check dedicated video memory. In Task Manager’s GPU panel or the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, look for dedicated VRAM. The Steam entries specify 6 GB for the minimum NVIDIA card and 8 GB for the minimum AMD card, while both recommended examples have 8 GB.
  5. Confirm DirectX 12 support. Press Win+R, enter dxdiag, and inspect the System and Display tabs. Install current Windows updates and the current graphics driver if the diagnostic information is incomplete or reports errors.
  6. Verify the installation drive. In the launcher, inspect the game’s install location and make sure it is an SSD with usable free capacity. Moving the game from a hard disk to an SSD is preferable to trying to compensate with graphics settings.

If your hardware falls between the two tiers, begin with the minimum-style configuration and increase quality one setting at a time. Do not infer a guaranteed frame rate from a GPU name alone: official material does not provide a complete benchmark matrix for every card, processor, resolution or game scene.

Optimize Resident Evil Requiem in the safest order

Change one category at a time and test the same demanding area after each change. This makes it possible to tell whether a driver, configuration, cache or heat problem was actually fixed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Update Windows, the GPU driver and DirectX

  • Run Windows Update and restart when it requests a reboot.
  • Install the latest stable driver for the NVIDIA or AMD GPU in the system. If you recently changed drivers and the problem began immediately afterward, a clean driver installation or a return to the previous stable release may be appropriate.
  • Use dxdiag again after updating to confirm that DirectX 12 is available and that the display adapter is detected correctly.

Updates should be completed before changing advanced settings. Otherwise, a driver defect can look like a graphics-quality problem and lead to unnecessary reductions in image quality.

2. Force the high-performance GPU and power mode

In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics, add or locate re9.exe, choose Options, select High performance and save. On a laptop, connect the AC adapter and choose the High performance power plan in Settings or Control Panel’s power options. If the manufacturer’s control application has a separate GPU or performance selector, set it to the discrete adapter while playing.

After changing the setting, start the game and watch Task Manager’s GPU graphs. If the integrated adapter remains heavily loaded while the discrete GPU is idle, the assignment did not take effect; repeat the Windows Graphics selection and check the laptop vendor’s GPU mode.

3. Verify the game files

Use the launcher’s installed-game management option to verify or repair the files. The exact button label varies by launcher, but it is normally found by opening the game’s Properties, Manage or Installed Files page and choosing Verify integrity or an equivalent command. Wait for the process to finish, allow it to redownload damaged files, then restart the launcher and the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Close overlays and recording software

Exit applications that capture video, display an overlay, monitor hardware or consume substantial CPU, GPU or memory. Temporarily disable the launcher overlay and other in-game overlays while testing. If the stutter disappears, re-enable each overlay separately to identify the conflict rather than leaving every background application running.

  • KEEP YOUR DRIVE UPDATED. Monitor your SSD’s performance and check for updates with the downloadable SANDISK Dashboard application.[5]

5. Clear the game’s shader and pipeline cache when graphics are unstable

Corrupted shader data can cause crashes, visual corruption or repeated stutter after a driver update. Close the game and launcher first. In the folder containing re9.exe, delete these game cache files if they are present:

  • shader.cache
  • shader.cache2
  • pipelinelist.bin

Then perform the appropriate shader or driver-cache cleanup for your GPU vendor, restart Windows and launch the game. The first run may compile shaders again and can stutter temporarily while that work is recreated. Do not delete unrelated files from the installation folder, and use file verification afterward if the launcher reports a missing file.

6. Disable Compatibility Mode

Right-click re9.exe, choose Properties → Compatibility and clear any Compatibility mode selection. Apply the change, then launch normally. Compatibility layers intended for older software can interfere with a current DirectX 12 title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Start at the lowest preset, then raise quality gradually

If the frame rate is unstable, open Graphics → Image → Quality Settings and choose Lowest. Restart or reload the same scene, observe stability, and increase one option at a time. This is more informative than moving every slider simultaneously because it shows which setting consumes the available headroom.

If the graphics menu cannot be used, Capcom documents a boot-time fallback: hold X, Y and B on a controller, or hold keyboard keys 7, 8 and 9, while the game starts to force the lowest settings. Once the game opens, make smaller changes and test again.

Configuration choices for low FPS and stutter

Lower the render workload first

Use the lowest quality preset as the baseline, then prioritize the settings that affect internal resolution or expensive effects. Keep the output resolution appropriate for the display, but accept a lower internal render resolution or stronger upscaling when a stable frame rate matters more than sharpness. The minimum and recommended Steam targets already rely on upscaling, so native 1080p rendering is not required for either official target.

Use a sensible frame-rate cap

If the game repeatedly jumps between high and low frame rates, cap it below the rate your PC can sustain in heavy scenes. A consistent cap often produces steadier frame times than an uncapped rate that constantly reaches the GPU’s limit. Do not use a cap to conceal overheating: investigate temperature and airflow as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test display mode, HDR and vertical sync

For flicker, a blank screen or unstable presentation, change one display option at a time: switch between fullscreen and borderless/windowed mode, toggle HDR, toggle vertical sync, and select a supported resolution and refresh rate. Apply the change, return to the game and check whether the display remains stable. If the screen goes blank, use the keyboard shortcut or launcher reset option to return to a known display mode, then try a different setting.

Heat, ventilation and hardware stability

Capcom notes that “Game operations may become unstable if your PC generates too much heat.” Heat-related symptoms include performance that degrades after several minutes, sudden clock-speed drops, crashes during heavy scenes and fans that remain at maximum speed. Lowering graphics settings or limiting the frame rate reduces sustained load, but airflow still needs attention.

  • Place a desktop tower where its intake and exhaust vents are unobstructed.
  • Keep laptop vents clear of fabric and use a hard, flat surface.
  • Remove accumulated dust from filters and heatsinks using the manufacturer’s safe cleaning procedure.
  • Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures and clock speeds while reproducing the problem; compare behavior immediately after launch with behavior after the slowdown begins.
  • Stop testing if the system shuts down, smells overheated or shows hardware errors.

An SSD and adequate cooling are separate requirements: moving the game to solid-state storage does not correct a GPU that is throttling, and improved ventilation does not make an unsupported integrated GPU equivalent to a dedicated card.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The game will not launch

  1. Confirm Windows 11 64-bit, DirectX 12, 16 GB RAM, an SSD and a dedicated GPU are present.
  2. Update Windows and the GPU driver, then restart.
  3. Verify the installed files.
  4. Disable Compatibility Mode for re9.exe and close overlays or recording tools.
  5. Clear the three game cache files if the failure began after a driver or game update, then allow shaders to rebuild.

Low FPS from the first minute

Check that Windows is using the high-performance GPU and that a laptop is plugged in. Select the Lowest quality setting, use a frame-rate cap and confirm that the game is installed on an SSD. If the PC only meets the minimum tier, a 30fps target with upscaling is the realistic starting point; do not expect a universal 60fps result from a nominally similar card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stutter that appears after an update

Update or clean-install the driver, clear shader.cache, shader.cache2 and pipelinelist.bin, and allow shader compilation to complete. Temporarily disable overlays and recording software. If the stutter persists while temperatures rise, address ventilation before increasing quality.

Crashes or instability during demanding scenes

Use the lowest preset, cap the frame rate, verify files and inspect temperatures. A high-load frame-rate drop is documented behavior, but repeated crashes are not solved by assuming every drop is normal. If the PC uses a mobile GPU or shared-memory graphics, compare it against Capcom’s compatibility warnings rather than relying only on the model’s name.

Flickering, HDR problems or a blank display

Switch display mode, disable or enable HDR, adjust vertical sync and choose a supported resolution and refresh rate. Apply changes individually so the setting responsible can be identified. If the problem occurs only with an external display, test another cable or refresh-rate combination after the in-game settings are stable.

When an upgrade is more practical than tuning

If the PC lacks Windows 11 64-bit support, has less than the required memory, uses a hard disk, or relies on integrated graphics, software tweaks cannot turn it into the listed configuration. The most direct upgrade path is a dedicated GPU in at least the minimum desktop class, an SSD for the installation and sufficient cooling. For a smoother 60fps objective, use the recommended-class CPU and 8 GB graphics-card examples as the comparison point.
