Buy the PS5 Pro version if you play mainly on a television and want the cleanest image, ray tracing, DualSense features, 3D audio, shorter loading, and the most performance headroom. Buy the Switch 2 version if handheld play, portability, or one-console flexibility matters more than visual quality. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 are the safest Switch 2 choices because hands-on reviews found their 60-fps targets consistent in both docked and handheld modes. Resident Evil 4 is a much harder compromise: its handheld image is visibly softer, with blurrier nearby objects, hair, and foliage than on PS5 Pro.
What is being released on Switch 2?
Capcom announced three products for Nintendo’s system: Resident Evil 2 Deluxe Edition, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition. Digital versions are scheduled for October 16, 2026. Physical versions are scheduled for January 29, 2027. The comparison here is between those Switch 2 releases and the PS5 Pro versions of the same remakes.

The announced release details name the Deluxe and Gold editions but do not list their bonus items or establish that every piece of content is identical to the PS5 Pro editions. Check the final Nintendo and PlayStation storefront descriptions before buying if specific costumes, expansions, or other extras matter to you.

Switch 2 or PS5 Pro: the short decision
Choose PS5 Pro when the television is your main screen
PS5 Pro is the better fit for a living-room setup, a large 4K HDR television, or a player who notices texture detail and image stability. Capcom’s PS5 support documentation for Resident Evil 2 lists a 4K HDR mode at 60 fps and a 4K HDR mode at 30 fps with ray tracing selected. The platform also supports adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, 3D audio, ray tracing, and shorter loading. No equivalent mode-by-mode PS5 Pro numbers are published for the other remakes, so do not treat the Resident Evil 2 figures as specifications for Resident Evil 3 or Resident Evil 4.

Choose Switch 2 when portability changes how you play
Switch 2’s decisive advantage is that the games can be played away from the television. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 were reported to hold their 60-fps targets in both docked and handheld modes, making them unusually straightforward recommendations for portable play. You accept a lower visual ceiling and fewer platform-specific features in exchange for being able to continue a campaign on a handheld screen, in another room, or while travelling.
Make Resident Evil 4 a separate decision
Resident Evil 4 places the greatest technical load on the Switch 2 versions. Tom’s Guide describes the handheld presentation as noticeably compromised: textures are softer, nearby objects can look blurry, and the downgrade is particularly apparent in hair and foliage. If Resident Evil 4 is the game you care about most and you mostly play on a television, PS5 Pro is the clear choice. Switch 2 remains reasonable only when portability outweighs those visual concessions.
Image quality and display differences
Why PS5 Pro looks cleaner on a large screen
A television magnifies differences that are easy to miss on a small handheld display. PS5 Pro has more rendering headroom for high-resolution output, detailed textures, effects, and ray tracing. In Resident Evil 2, Capcom documents 4K HDR output at either 60 fps without ray tracing or 30 fps with ray tracing. That gives television players a choice between motion fluidity and additional lighting effects.
The Switch 2 editions are designed around a broader range of displays. Docked play can look good at normal viewing distances, but the system has less reserve for maintaining the same level of detail as a PS5 Pro. Resident Evil 4 makes that difference easiest to see: distant and nearby surfaces lose texture clarity, and fine geometry such as hair and foliage reveals the lower-fidelity presentation. These are image-quality compromises, not evidence that the game is unplayable.

Handheld viewing changes the trade-off
On a handheld screen, the Switch 2’s portability can matter more than pixel-level detail. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 retain their reported 60-fps targets in handheld mode, so movement and aiming remain smooth while you are away from a television. Resident Evil 4’s softer textures and blur are still visible, but a smaller screen can make them less distracting than they are on a large 4K display.
Performance, frame rate, and loading
Resident Evil 2
TechRadar’s reviewer completed both Leon and Claire’s stories and spent more than 20 hours with the Switch 2 edition. The review reports a 60-fps target with delightfully consistent frame rates in docked and handheld play, including higher-intensity action. That makes Switch 2 a credible performance option rather than merely a portable novelty. The same review still places PS5 Pro or PC ahead for peak performance, and the Switch 2 edition does not include gyro aiming or a mouse mode.
Resident Evil 3
TechRadar describes Resident Evil 3 as a shorter, more action-focused campaign that can be completed in about six hours. Its Switch 2 version targets 60 fps in both modes, with only barely noticeable drops reported in docked and handheld play. PS5 Pro remains the choice if you want maximum performance reserve, but published hands-on reports do not identify a major Switch 2 frame-rate problem.

No Switch 2 frame-rate figure for Resident Evil 4 has been published. Its weakness is instead described visually, especially in handheld mode. PS5 Pro’s additional performance headroom makes it the safer platform for a demanding, long-form action game when you want stable presentation and fewer compromises. Do not infer a specific Switch 2 frame rate for Resident Evil 4 from the 60-fps reports for Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3.

Loading and responsiveness
Capcom lists shorter loading among the PS5 features for Resident Evil 2. No measured loading times are published for either platform, so there is no defensible number to quote. The practical conclusion is qualitative: PS5 Pro is the better choice if you strongly dislike transition waits, while Switch 2’s value is the ability to play in more places.
Controller and audio features
PS5 Pro supports DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback in the documented Resident Evil 2 configuration, along with 3D audio and ray tracing. These features add texture to weapon feedback, environmental sounds, and lighting, but they matter most to players using a compatible television, headset, and controller setup.
The Switch 2 versions’ portability is their defining platform feature. Resident Evil 2’s Switch 2 review specifically notes the absence of gyro aiming and mouse mode. If motion aiming or mouse-style precision is part of your preferred control scheme, PS5 Pro or PC is a better fit. If you normally use standard sticks and value handheld play, that omission may not affect your decision.

Resident Evil 2: the best all-round Switch 2 recommendation
Resident Evil 2 is the strongest starting point for newcomers and the most balanced purchase in this comparison. It combines exploration, puzzle solving, and two linked character campaigns rather than concentrating only on set-piece action. TechRadar’s reviewer completed Leon and Claire’s stories and recorded more than 20 hours with the Switch 2 edition, while reporting consistent 60-fps performance in both docked and handheld modes.

Buy the Switch 2 Deluxe Edition if you want the remake in portable form and can accept the missing gyro aiming and mouse mode. Buy the PS5 Pro version if you have a 4K HDR television, want ray tracing as an option, or are especially sensitive to image quality and loading. The PS5 Pro version is also the safer long-term choice for a television-first setup because it has more performance reserve.

Resident Evil 3: choose it for a shorter, faster campaign
Resident Evil 3 is the action-oriented option. TechRadar’s playthrough reached the end in about six hours, with fewer puzzles and a stronger emphasis on running, shooting, and set pieces. That shorter length can be a benefit if you want a focused weekend game, but it is less suitable if you are seeking the exploration and replay structure of Resident Evil 2.
The Switch 2 version targets 60 fps in docked and handheld modes, and TechRadar reported only barely noticeable drops. That makes it one of the easiest Switch 2 recommendations for players who want portable action without a conspicuous performance penalty. PS5 Pro still wins for maximum image quality and headroom, especially on a large television, but the practical gap is narrower than Resident Evil 4’s visual gap.
- Choose Switch 2: if a six-hour, action-heavy campaign fits your schedule and you want handheld flexibility.
- Choose PS5 Pro: if you prefer the cleanest large-screen image and the documented platform features.
- Set expectations: its shorter campaign and reduced puzzle emphasis make it a different experience from Resident Evil 2, not a direct replacement for it.
Resident Evil 4: buy the PS5 Pro version unless portability is the priority
Resident Evil 4 is the most ambitious game in this group and, for many players, the strongest overall title. It also exposes the largest Switch 2 compromises. Tom’s Guide identifies the port as the most technically compromised, with noticeably softer textures in handheld mode, blurrier nearby objects, and more obvious reductions in hair and foliage detail.

Those compromises are easiest to notice on a television, where a larger image makes fine detail more apparent. PS5 Pro is therefore the default recommendation for Resident Evil 4: it offers a cleaner presentation and greater performance headroom. Choose the Switch 2 Gold Edition only when the ability to play Resident Evil 4 handheld is worth accepting the softer image. No published specification establishes a specific Switch 2 frame-rate target for this game, so do not buy it assuming it shares Resident Evil 2’s or Resident Evil 3’s performance profile.

Buying dates and edition checks
If you want a digital copy, the announced date for all three Switch 2 products is October 16, 2026. If you require a cartridge or boxed copy, the announced date is January 29, 2027. The two dates are not interchangeable: waiting for the physical release means waiting more than three months after the digital launch.
Before checkout, confirm the exact product name. Resident Evil 2 is listed as Deluxe Edition and Resident Evil 4 as Gold Edition, while Resident Evil 3 is listed without an edition qualifier in the supplied announcement. The available information does not enumerate the additional content included in Deluxe or Gold, so read the final store listing if bonus items are important to you. Also verify that the purchase is for the Switch 2 version rather than an older platform release.

- Identify your main screen. If you will play mostly on a television, start with PS5 Pro. If you will play in bed, during travel, or away from the television, start with Switch 2.
- Pick the game before the hardware. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 are more forgiving Switch 2 choices than Resident Evil 4.
- Decide whether platform features matter. For Resident Evil 2, PS5 documentation lists 4K HDR, a 60-fps mode, a 30-fps ray-tracing mode, adaptive triggers, haptics, 3D audio, and shorter loading.
- Check your control preferences. If you depend on gyro aiming or mouse mode, the Switch 2 Resident Evil 2 edition is not the right fit.
- Choose digital or physical timing. Digital launches are scheduled for October 16, 2026; physical releases are scheduled for January 29, 2027.
- Confirm edition contents. The names Deluxe Edition and Gold Edition do not, by themselves, explain which extras are included.
Bottom line by game
Resident Evil 2: Switch 2 is good enough for most portable players and delivers the strongest balance of quality and flexibility. PS5 Pro is better for a large-screen enthusiast.
Resident Evil 3: Switch 2 is an especially sensible choice if you want a short, action-focused campaign that targets 60 fps in both modes. PS5 Pro remains the premium television option.
