For most newcomers, start with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It offers the strongest balance of survival-horror tension, exploration, resource decisions and modern presentation. Pick Resident Evil 4 (2023) if you want faster combat and a more accessible action adventure, Resident Evil (2002/HD Remaster) if you want classic mansion exploration and puzzles, or Resident Evil 3 (2020) if you prefer a shorter, brisker campaign with an additional multiplayer mode.
These are not four versions of the same experience. Each remake changes the balance between fear, combat, navigation and spectacle. The right starting point depends on whether you want traditional survival horror, a modern all-rounder, action, or a compact campaign.

What each remake actually is
Resident Evil (2002 remake and HD Remaster)
Capcom describes the 2002 release as a re-imagined take on the 1996 PlayStation original rather than a simple visual upgrade. The setting remains the Spencer Mansion, but the remake expands the mansion, adds rooms and puzzles, changes enemy behavior and introduces new story material. Its design is built around learning a complicated location, deciding which items to carry, and returning through previously visited rooms when a newly acquired key or clue opens another route.

Tank controls keep the character’s turning independent from the camera and can feel unfamiliar on a modern controller; the analog option points movement in the direction you push the stick. The choice affects how the game feels, but neither mode removes the deliberate pacing, fixed camera angles or inventory management that define this entry.
#1 Best Overall
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Resident Evil 2 (2019)
The remake of Resident Evil 2 launched on January 25, 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Capcom rebuilt it from the ground up for contemporary platforms with the RE Engine. The result uses an over-the-shoulder camera, physically detailed environments, dynamic lighting and high-fidelity character damage rather than the original’s fixed viewpoints.
Its police-station setting is a navigation puzzle as much as a battlefield. You search rooms for keys and mechanisms, mark blocked routes mentally, and decide whether to spend ammunition on a threat or leave it in place for a later visit. The sound design supports that pressure with Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 and binaural audio options, allowing footsteps, doors and distant impacts to communicate where danger may be.
Resident Evil 3 (2020)
Released on April 3, 2020, Resident Evil 3 is Capcom’s reimagining of the 1999 Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. It uses the RE Engine and follows Jill Valentine through a more mobile, urgent version of Raccoon City. The campaign spends less time making you solve a large, interlocking map and more time moving you through combat arenas, escapes and scripted set pieces.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe remake also includes Resident Evil Resistance, an asymmetrical online multiplayer game. That component is a separate mode with its own rules and pacing, so it does not turn the single-player campaign into a multiplayer-focused Resident Evil game. It is an important part of the package if you want an additional online activity, but the single-player story remains the reason to buy the remake for most players.
Resident Evil 4 (2023)
The remake released on March 24, 2023 and reworks the 2005 original while preserving its central appeal for both new and returning players. Capcom uses the RE Engine to modernize aiming, movement, stealth options, enemy encounters and the presentation of the story. Compared with the other remakes, it is much more comfortable with sustained combat and large encounters.
The campaign is organized around varied locations and set pieces rather than one persistent puzzle box. You still manage ammunition, healing items and upgrades, but the dominant question is often how to control a crowd, create space and exploit an enemy’s weakness. The Gold Edition bundles Separate Ways and the Extra DLC Pack, giving buyers a larger package than the base game; confirm the exact edition and platform before purchasing because availability can differ by region.
Horror, atmosphere and tension
Choose RE1 for the most traditional fear
Resident Evil creates tension through uncertainty and limitation. Fixed camera angles can hide what is around a corner, while narrow corridors and a small inventory force you to plan trips. The mansion’s layout becomes familiar only after repeated crossings, so a locked door is not merely a barrier: it is a promise that a future return may be dangerous.

This approach is slower and more deliberate than the later remakes. If you enjoy mapping a location in your head, examining clues and accepting that some fights are better avoided, RE1 delivers the purest version of that formula.

- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
Choose RE2 for the best modern survival-horror balance
Resident Evil 2 retains resource pressure and exploration while giving you modern aiming and a clear over-the-shoulder view. The police station and adjoining areas encourage backtracking, but the presentation makes threats easier to read than in a fixed-camera game. Sound becomes a major source of dread: you may hear an enemy before you know its route, and every gunshot can change the danger level of a room.
It is the safest recommendation when you want fear without giving up contemporary controls. The game asks you to conserve resources and learn routes, yet it remains readable for someone who has never played a classic Resident Evil title.
Choose RE3 for urgency over sustained dread
Resident Evil 3 sits between survival horror and action. It still uses scarce resources, environmental hazards and frightening enemies, but its pace is faster and its path is more linear. Pursuit sequences and set pieces create immediate pressure; they do not provide the same prolonged process of mastering a single building that defines RE1 or RE2.
Choose RE4 for action-horror
Resident Evil 4 is the least restrictive of the four. Its horror comes from hostile crowds, disturbing environments and escalating set pieces, but the combat system is the center of the experience. If you prefer aiming, parrying, movement and weapon upgrades to long periods of route planning, RE4 is the natural choice.
Campaign structure and exploration
| Game | How progression works | What you repeatedly do |
|---|---|---|
| RE1 | Large mansion with locked doors, keys and puzzle chains | Search rooms, identify useful items, backtrack and optimize inventory trips |
| RE2 | Connected areas with multiple routes and scenario-specific progression | Explore, solve environmental puzzles, decide which enemies to leave alive and return for supplies |
| RE3 | More linear route with frequent transitions and set pieces | Advance quickly, survive pursuit sections, fight through encounters and react to scripted changes |
| RE4 | Distinct areas linked by a forward-moving adventure structure | Fight varied enemies, improve equipment, use the environment and handle large encounters |
Backtracking is not automatically better or worse; it determines the kind of attention the game demands. RE1 and RE2 reward players who remember room layouts and notice previously inaccessible paths. RE3 reduces that mental overhead so the story can maintain momentum. RE4 provides exploration inside individual areas, but its overall rhythm is closer to an action adventure than a maze.
Controls, camera and accessibility
Fixed camera versus modern third-person view
RE1 uses fixed camera compositions. They create cinematic framing and occasional uncertainty, but movement can feel less direct because the camera changes as you cross invisible boundaries. The HD Remaster addresses the largest control concern by allowing either the original tank scheme or modern analog movement. Players can choose per preference rather than being locked into one control philosophy.
RE2, RE3 and RE4 use modern third-person conventions. The camera follows the character, aiming is direct, and movement while preparing a weapon is easier to understand immediately. That makes these games more approachable for players accustomed to contemporary console and PC action games.

RE2’s RE Engine rendering and Dolby Atmos 7.1.4/binaural audio support are especially effective in headphones or a compatible surround setup, but the game remains playable on ordinary stereo equipment. RE3 and RE4 use the same engine family to deliver detailed environments and characters. RE1’s HD presentation improves its original models and backgrounds and adds a widescreen layout, while preserving the older camera language that is central to its identity.

- A New Perspective – See the eighth core entry in the Resident Evil series from a new vantage point in “Third Person Mode.” In addition to the intense first-person view players enjoyed in the initial release of Resident Evil Village, they can now watch Ethan in action and experience his journey from a new angle in Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion.
- The Story Continues – “Shadows of Rose” resumes the Winters family saga 16 years after the events of Resident Evil Village. The expansion’s new tale follows Rose Winters, the daughter of main protagonist Ethan, as she struggles with her terrifying powers. Explore the warped and twisted world inside the consciousness of the Megamycete in search of a cure.
- The Mercenaries Are Back and Bigger Than Ever – The beloved battle-the-clock mode, “The Mercenaries,” returns with new features. On top of the original content, “The Mercenaries Additional Orders” introduces fan favorites as new playable characters Lady Dimitrescu, Chris Redfield, and Lord Karl Heisenberg, each with their own unique abilities. This added content for Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion also includes new levels and other improvements.
- Bonus Game – Resident Evil Village will provide access to a free multiplayer experience titled Resident Evil Re:Verse, which releases on Oct. 28, 2022 alongside the launch of Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion. An all-star cast of iconic characters face off in four to six-player deathmatch battles in classic locations.

Extra content and edition decisions
Resident Evil Resistance with RE3
RE3 includes Resident Evil Resistance, an asymmetrical online mode in which players take different roles. Treat it as a bonus mode rather than a replacement for the campaign. Online populations, matchmaking and support can vary by platform and over time, so verify current availability if multiplayer is your main reason for choosing RE3.
RE4 Gold Edition
The Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition includes the main remake, Separate Ways and the Extra DLC Pack. The additional story gives the package more narrative content, while the extra pack adds optional bonuses. Confirm whether you are buying the base game, Gold Edition or a bundle that already includes the downloadable content; stores can list them separately.
Platform and regional checks
Platform catalogs, cloud features, mobile versions and edition contents vary by market. RE2’s original remake release covered PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC; later platform support may differ by edition. RE3 and RE4 also have platform-specific releases and bundles. Before buying, check the store page for your exact console or PC storefront, the included downloadable content, language options and whether online features require an active platform subscription.
Which remake should you play first?
If you have never played Resident Evil
- Start with RE2 (2019) for the most balanced introduction to exploration, fear, combat and modern controls.
- Move to RE4 (2023) if you discover that you prefer combat and spectacle to methodical navigation.
- Try RE1 HD Remaster when you want to understand the series’ original mansion-and-puzzle structure.
- Play RE3 (2020) when you want a faster companion to RE2’s setting or are interested in Resistance.
If you are a classic survival-horror player
Begin with RE1, then play RE2. That order moves from fixed-camera route learning to modern third-person exploration while preserving the series’ emphasis on limited resources. RE3 can follow as a shorter, more action-oriented variation, with RE4 last if you want to see how the formula develops into action-horror.
If you mainly play action games
Choose RE4 first. Its modernized combat, varied encounters and forward momentum require less patience for backtracking. Afterward, RE2 provides a sharper contrast: fewer resources, more room management and a stronger emphasis on deciding when not to fight.
If you want the shortest-feeling route through the series
Choose RE3. Its faster, more linear structure gets to set pieces quickly. The trade-off is that it offers less of the interconnected exploration that makes RE1 and RE2 memorable.
Sales milestones and what they do—and do not—tell you
Commercial performance confirms that all three modern remakes reached large audiences, but sales are not a substitute for choosing a style. Capcom reported the following milestones in a corporate release reported April 25, 2025:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Game | Reported milestone | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| RE2 remake | More than 15 million cumulative units | Capcom-reported cumulative figure for 2024; not an independent audit |
| RE3 remake | More than 10 million cumulative units | Capcom-reported cumulative figure for 2024; not an independent audit |
| RE4 remake | More than 10 million units in approximately two years | Capcom called it the fastest series entry to reach that milestone; figure reported April 25, 2025 |
Earlier launch figures show the initial scale of each release: RE2 sold 3 million units in its first week in 2019; RE3 shipped 2 million units in five days in 2020; and RE4 sold more than 3 million units in its first two days in 2023. These are publisher-reported launch measurements using different wording, so they should not be treated as directly comparable sell-through audits.
Bottom-line choice
Pick RE2 (2019) when you want one game that best balances horror, exploration and modern design. Pick RE4 (2023) for action-forward combat and the most broadly accessible structure. Pick RE1 HD Remaster for fixed-camera mansion exploration, puzzles and the most traditional survival-horror experience. Pick RE3 (2020) for a brisk campaign and the included Resident Evil Resistance multiplayer mode.
