Short answer: Nintendo Switch 2 is the better choice if you want to play the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes away from a television. Both are reported to target 60 frames per second in handheld and docked modes. PlayStation 5 Pro is the better large-screen option, with substantially more image-quality and performance headroom, plus hardware support for advanced ray tracing and Sony’s PSSR reconstruction.
Resident Evil 4 is the dividing line. It targets 60fps on Switch 2, but its lower internal rendering resolution is much more visible; a locked 40fps mode may be the steadier choice. On PS5 Pro, the evidence supports a cleaner, more capable presentation, but there is no published resolution table proving a specific native resolution or a ray-tracing mode for every remake.

The Switch 2 figures in this table describe internal rendering where stated, not necessarily the resolution sent to the display. An upscaled 540p internal image should not be called native 1080p or native 4K.

What changes between the two consoles
Play location
Switch 2 can run each remake in handheld or docked mode. That makes its main advantage independent of television size: you can continue a campaign on the built-in screen, then return to a television without buying a second version. The cited reviews found the 60fps target for Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 in both modes, rather than limiting the smoother experience to the dock.
PS5 Pro is a television-focused system. Its advantages become easier to see on a large 4K display, especially one with a 120Hz input or variable-refresh support. On a smaller screen, the same image-quality difference may be less obvious than the convenience of handheld play.
Rendering headroom
The PS5 Pro has an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing capability and AI-enhanced image reconstruction through PSSR, according to Sony’s official description of the console. Those capabilities give developers more room to preserve detail and high frame rates. They do not, by themselves, prove that every Resident Evil remake uses a particular ray-tracing effect or a particular native resolution.

Switch 2’s RE4 profile shows the opposite trade-off: the game can pursue a playable frame-rate target by rendering internally at a lower resolution and reconstructing the image for output. Fine hair, foliage, distant geometry and moving details are the areas most likely to reveal that compromise.

60fps target and consistency
TechRadar reports that the Switch 2 edition targets 60fps and that its frame rates were “delightfully consistent,” including during higher-intensity action. In practical terms, that means the conversion is not merely aiming for a high number in quiet corridors; the review describes smooth control response when combat becomes busier.
The same coverage describes continuity between handheld and docked play. You do not have to reserve the 60fps experience for a television, and there is no cited warning of frequent, disruptive drops in either mode.

Visual expectations
Resident Evil 2 is the safest first Switch 2 purchase if performance on the portable system is your main concern. It is still not the version to choose solely for the highest possible visual presentation. TechRadar notes that players seeking peak performance and a more premium image may prefer PS5 Pro or PC.

Another portable 60fps target
TechRadar reports a 60fps target for the Switch 2 edition and smooth frame rates in both docked and handheld modes, with barely noticeable drops. The result is similar to RE2 from a performance perspective: the portable conversion prioritizes responsive action instead of treating handheld mode as a lower-quality fallback.
HDR and display setup
The review specifically notes that HDR calibration helps the graphics translate well. If your television or portable display offers HDR, use its calibration controls rather than assuming the default image is correct. The exact menu names can vary by display, but the goal is to keep dark scenes from crushing shadow detail while preventing bright effects from clipping.
PS5 Pro remains the choice for a more premium presentation on a large screen. The Switch 2 version’s attraction is that the same campaign and broadly similar frame-rate target can travel with you.

Why RE4 behaves differently
Resident Evil 4 has heavier scenes and puts more pressure on the portable hardware than the other two remakes. The comparison coverage says the Switch 2 edition aims for 60fps, but it identifies RE4 as the clearest example of the hardware compromises involved.

Nintendo Life’s summary of Digital Foundry’s October 2026 analysis identifies a locked 40fps mode as a potentially more consistent option. A locked 40fps presentation updates every 25 milliseconds, compared with 16.7 milliseconds for a perfect 60fps target. It is therefore less responsive than 60fps, but a stable 40fps can feel preferable to a mode that repeatedly misses its 60fps target.
Whether to use 60fps or 40fps depends on what you notice most. Choose 60fps if responsive aiming and faster camera movement are your priority and occasional compromises do not bother you. Choose 40fps if uneven frame delivery is more distracting and your display handles that mode cleanly.
What the resolution measurements mean
Respec reports an internal resolution of 360p in handheld mode and 540p in docked mode for RE4 on Switch 2, with upscaling applied afterward. These are RE4-specific measurements. They must not be copied onto RE2 or RE3, for which the cited coverage does not establish equivalent internal-resolution figures.
Internal resolution is the number of pixels the game renders before reconstruction or upscaling. The final signal sent to a television or the Switch 2 screen can be higher. Calling the docked image “540p output” would therefore be misleading if the console is scaling it to a higher display mode; calling it native 1080p or native 4K would be even less accurate.
Visible compromises
The lower internal budget can preserve a playable target, but it makes fine detail less stable than on PS5 Pro. Hair strands, foliage, thin geometry and objects moving across the screen are the most revealing examples. Reconstruction can make a static scene look acceptable while motion exposes shimmer, softness or lost detail.
That does not make RE4 unplayable on Switch 2. It explains why RE4 is the stronger technical showcase for PS5 Pro and why it is a less automatic recommendation for Switch 2 than RE2.

Resolution: what is known and what is not
Do not treat “4K” as a native-rendering claim
PS5 Pro’s PSSR is designed to create an AI-enhanced 4K image from a lower internal rendering workload. A 4K output label can therefore describe the display signal rather than four-million-plus pixels being rendered natively every frame. The available comparison material does not provide a game-by-game native-resolution table for the three remakes on PS5 Pro.

Why a single table would be misleading
Resolution can change with mode, scene load, reconstruction settings and the distinction between internal and output pixels. A console may also hold a frame-rate target by changing its internal scale. Without measurements for the same scene and mode on both platforms, a neat “Switch 2 versus PS5 Pro: 1080p versus 4K” table would imply a certainty that the published evidence does not support.
Ray tracing and PSSR on PS5 Pro
What Sony confirms
Sony describes PS5 Pro as having an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and PSSR, its AI-enhanced resolution technology. These are platform capabilities that raise the potential image-quality ceiling over a less powerful console.
What the available remake coverage does not confirm
The cited material does not document a separate ray-tracing toggle, a specific ray-traced reflection or lighting mode, or a guaranteed PSSR setting for each of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4. It is accurate to say that PS5 Pro offers the hardware and reconstruction tools for a stronger presentation; it is not accurate to promise that every remake visibly enables every feature.
Switch 2’s cited performance reports do not identify a ray-tracing mode. Its RE4 analysis instead emphasizes internal-resolution reduction and upscaling as the route to maintaining playability. That is a different optimization strategy from the one enabled by PS5 Pro’s larger GPU budget.

How display choice changes the verdict
Large 4K television
On a large 4K television, softness and reconstruction artifacts occupy more of your field of view. This is where PS5 Pro’s extra image-quality headroom, PSSR support and advanced ray-tracing capability matter most. A 120Hz or variable-refresh display can also make high-frame-rate output easier to appreciate, although the cited sources do not provide a universal refresh-rate mode list for these games.
Handheld screen
On Switch 2’s built-in screen, portability is the decisive feature. RE2 and RE3 are reported to retain smooth 60fps-target performance in handheld mode. RE4’s lower internal resolution can still be visible, particularly in motion, but the ability to play away from a television may outweigh that loss for many owners.
Docked Switch 2 play
Docking gives RE2 and RE3 the same reported 60fps-target behavior while moving the image to a larger display. RE4 receives a higher reported internal resolution when docked—540p rather than 360p—but it remains an upscaled presentation and is more exposed on a large screen.
Which version should you buy?
Choose Switch 2 when portability is the requirement
- You want to play in bed, while traveling or in rooms without a television.
- You are starting with RE2 and want the least compromised Switch 2 performance profile.
- You prefer the option to switch between handheld and docked play without changing platforms.
- You accept that RE4 uses a lower internal rendering budget than the PS5 Pro presentation.
Choose PS5 Pro when image quality is the requirement
- You play primarily on a large 4K television.
- You want the greatest performance and image-quality headroom available between these two versions.
- You are buying RE4 specifically as a technical showcase.
- You have a display where reconstruction quality, fine detail and ray-tracing capability are easy to see.
Choose by game
Resident Evil 2: the safest Switch 2 recommendation. Its reported 60fps target and consistent frame rates make it the least difficult portable choice.
Resident Evil 3: a good Switch 2 fit if you want a shorter, more action-focused campaign and smooth portable play. HDR calibration is worth doing on a compatible display.
Resident Evil 4: the clearest reason to buy on PS5 Pro if you prioritize visual quality. On Switch 2, decide between the 60fps target and the potentially steadier locked 40fps mode based on your tolerance for uneven frame delivery.
Practical setup checklist
- Decide where you will play most. If the answer is handheld, Switch 2’s portability is a functional advantage rather than a cosmetic extra. If the answer is a large television, PS5 Pro’s hardware headroom is more relevant.
- Calibrate HDR on compatible displays. RE3 coverage specifically notes that HDR calibration helps the image translate well. Use your display’s own clipping and shadow-detail controls if the game does not provide a detailed wizard.
- Start RE4 on Switch 2 in the 60fps-target mode. Check camera motion and combat in a busy scene rather than judging only a quiet corridor.
- Try the locked 40fps mode if frame pacing is distracting. The mode identified in the October 2026 Digital Foundry analysis may feel more consistent, at the cost of some responsiveness.
- Judge resolution from motion, not a paused screenshot. Look at hair, foliage, thin railings and distant objects while moving. Reconstruction artifacts are easier to identify during movement.
- Do not infer a native resolution from the television’s input label. A 4K signal can contain an internally reconstructed image, and the documented RE4 Switch 2 figures are internal values.
Limits of the published performance data
The available coverage gives useful game-specific findings but not a complete laboratory dataset. There is no independent benchmark set covering identical scenes, frame-time graphs and matching settings for all three remakes on both consoles. There is also no official Capcom resolution table covering every mode.

RE4 makes the trade-off visible: Switch 2 remains viable, but its lower internal resolution and optional 40fps compromise are easier to notice than in the other remakes.
