Capcom’s released remake line consists of Resident Evil (2002), Resident Evil 2 (2019), Resident Evil 3 (2020), and Resident Evil 4 (2023). A Resident Evil Veronica remake, based on Resident Evil Code: Veronica (2000), is announced for 2027. If you are new, start with Resident Evil 2 (2019), which Capcom staff describe as a strong jumping-on point. For a connected remake run, play RE2, then RE3, then RE4. Choose RE4 first if you want the most action-oriented remake, or Resident Evil 7 biohazard if fear matters more than remake continuity.
Which Resident Evil games have been remade?
There are four released remakes and one officially announced remake. They do not form a complete remake of every numbered game: Capcom has confirmed the titles below, while proposed remakes of Resident Evil 0, another version of Resident Evil, Resident Evil 5 or Resident Evil 6 are not official announcements from Capcom.
| Remake | Original covered | Release or status | What Capcom confirms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil | 1996 original | Released in 2002 | The early remake-era version of the first game |
| Resident Evil 2 | Resident Evil 2 | January 25, 2019 | A remake using modern technology to bring back the original’s horror |
| Resident Evil 3 | Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (September 1999) | April 3, 2020 | The remake version of the third main game |
| Resident Evil 4 | Resident Evil 4 (2005) | March 24, 2023 | A remake that reworks the story and delivers a fresh gameplay experience |
| Resident Evil Veronica | Resident Evil Code: Veronica (2000) | Announced for 2027 | An upcoming remake; no exact launch date has been announced |
The dates above are the original release dates or the release dates listed by Capcom. “Remake” means a rebuilt game, not merely a port, resolution upgrade or collection release. The projects differ in how extensively they revise story, presentation and game systems, so the original and remake are separate experiences.
Is the first Resident Evil remade?
Yes. The first game was remade in 2002, corresponding to the 1996 original. Capcom’s timeline treats the 2002 release as the remake-era version of the series opener. It is therefore correct to say that Resident Evil 1 has been remade.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That answer needs one qualification: the confirmed remake line does not include a newly announced remake of the 2002 game itself. The 2002 release is the first game’s established remake, while the later projects are new remakes of RE2, RE3 and RE4. Do not confuse a platform re-release of the 2002 title with another remake project.
What should you play first?
Best entry point for a newcomer: Resident Evil 2 (2019)
Start with Resident Evil 2 (2019). Capcom USA staff wrote on October 18, 2024: “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” The game introduces the modern remake approach without requiring you to have played an earlier title, and it establishes the Raccoon City period that connects naturally to the remake of RE3.
Best connected remake sequence: RE2, then RE3, then RE4
Play Resident Evil 2 (2019) → Resident Evil 3 (2020) → Resident Evil 4 (2023). This follows the release sequence for the modern remakes and gives you a coherent progression in setting and design. RE2 and RE3 cover the Raccoon City period; RE4 follows Leon later, in a different mission and setting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Resident Evil 2 (2019): Begin here for the clearest introduction to the remake line.
- Resident Evil 3 (2020): Continue the Raccoon City-era story and survival-horror focus.
- Resident Evil 4 (2023): Move to the later Leon mission and a more action-led design.
If you prefer action: Resident Evil 4 (2023)
Choose Resident Evil 4 first if you want the most action-forward remake. Capcom describes it as a remake of the original 2005 title and says the project reworks the story while providing a fresh gameplay experience. You can understand its central mission without playing the earlier remakes, although playing RE2 first gives Leon’s role more context.

If you want the strongest fear factor: Resident Evil 7 biohazard
Resident Evil 7 biohazard is not a remake, but Capcom USA staff singled it out as “the scariest one!” Pick it when atmosphere and fear are more important than following the remake sequence. It is a different branch of the modern series, so starting there does not replace the recommended RE2 entry point for someone who specifically wants to understand the remakes.
Should you play the RE2 remake before the RE3 remake?
Yes, for most players. RE2 comes first in the modern remake sequence and introduces the Raccoon City setting that RE3 shares. Playing in that order also mirrors the release dates: January 25, 2019, followed by April 3, 2020.
You can start with RE3 if you already know the series or only want that game’s campaign, but doing so gives up the cleanest narrative and mechanical progression. It is not necessary to play the 1996 or 1999 originals first; the remakes are designed as rebuilt versions of those stories.
How are the remakes different in tone and design?
Survival horror in RE2 and RE3
The modern RE2 and RE3 remakes emphasize survival-horror tension. Expect the Raccoon City setting, pressure from limited resources and a stronger focus on danger and exploration than the action-led entries. Capcom’s descriptions support this qualitative distinction, but they do not assign a numeric horror-versus-action score.

More action in RE4
RE4 remains part of the remake family while moving toward more action-oriented play. Capcom presents it as a fresh experience rather than a simple visual update, with a reworked story and modernized game elements. That makes it the natural choice for players who find traditional survival-horror pacing too slow.
Why there is no exact horror ranking
Descriptions such as “more frightening” or “more action-heavy” are useful for choosing a game, but they are not official measurements. Capcom has not published a numeric horror or action scale. Treat the comparisons as broad design guidance, not a scored benchmark.
What is the next game after the RE4 remake?
Your next choice depends on whether you want another remake or the newest announced story. Resident Evil 7 biohazard is the strongest fear-first detour. Resident Evil Requiem is the current non-remake option in Capcom’s announcement, scheduled for February 27, 2026. It belongs to the broader series rather than the remake sequence, so do not label it a remake or assume that it retells an older numbered game.
Capcom has also announced Resident Evil Veronica for 2027. It is a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, originally released in 2000. Because Capcom has not announced an exact day, wait for the final date and edition information before treating it as available or planning a purchase around a specific launch schedule.

What is known about Resident Evil Veronica?
The announced title is Resident Evil Veronica, and Capcom explicitly identifies it as a remake of the original Resident Evil Code: Veronica from 2000. The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.
The announcement confirms the 2027 window but not a day, month, price, edition list or detailed feature set. Those details can vary by region and may change before launch. Treat any claims beyond the announced platforms and year as unconfirmed until Capcom publishes them.
Which version should you buy and where can you play?
Capcom lists released remake titles across combinations of PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, PC, Apple devices and cloud or portable variants. The exact combination depends on the individual game, edition and territory. A platform appearing in the series-wide list is not a guarantee that every remake runs on that platform.
- Check the store page for your country before buying; availability, physical stock and editions can change by region.
- Confirm whether you are purchasing the remake itself rather than an original-game port, bundle or add-on.
- On consoles, verify the specific generation listed for the title, especially when choosing between PlayStation 4/5 or Xbox One/Series versions.
- For Apple, cloud and portable versions, check the current supported device list and whether the purchase is a native release or a streaming option.
How the remake line fits into the wider series
The remakes are a way to revisit landmark stories with contemporary technology, not a replacement for every mainline release. The 2002 first-game remake predates the 2019–2023 run by many years. RE2 and RE3 form the closest setting-based pair, while RE4 changes the location, mission and balance toward action. RE7 biohazard and Resident Evil Requiem are non-remake entries and should be selected as modern series games, not inserted into a remake-only checklist.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
That distinction matters when someone asks for “the remake order.” The strict released order is Resident Evil (2002), RE2 (2019), RE3 (2020), then RE4 (2023). The best newcomer order is usually the shorter connected run of RE2, RE3 and RE4, because it starts with Capcom’s recommended entry point instead of asking a new player to begin with the older 2002 remake.
What do the sales figures show?
Capcom’s published figures show strong performance for both remakes and the wider franchise, but each number has its own cutoff date and scope.
- Resident Evil 4 (2023) passed 10 million worldwide sales in approximately two years, which Capcom identified in April 2025 as the fastest series title to reach that mark.
- Resident Evil 2 (2019) and Resident Evil 7 biohazard each exceeded 15 million cumulative units in Capcom’s April 2025 figures.
- The series total was more than 167 million units as of December 31, 2024.
- Capcom’s Integrated Report 2025 reported more than 170 million cumulative series sales as of March 31, 2025.
- The Resident Evil Veronica announcement reported 201 million cumulative series sales as of March 31, 2026.
The totals rise because they use different reporting dates and represent the entire franchise, not just remakes. They should not be added together, and the series totals do not indicate that every individual remake sold the same amount.
