Resident Evil protagonists are not balanced on a single strength scale. Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine are trained S.T.A.R.S. or BSAA operatives; Leon S. Kennedy develops from rookie police officer into an experienced agent; Claire Redfield’s campaigns emphasize civilian survival and rescue; and Ethan Winters’ first-person games make exploration, resource decisions, and close-range horror especially immediate.
The useful comparison is the one the games actually support: who stars in each campaign, what role the story gives them, and which mechanics—ammunition conservation, puzzles, investigation, evasion, crafting, melee, or crowd combat—shape the player’s decisions.

What “abilities” mean in Resident Evil
Resident Evil does not publish a consistent set of protagonist statistics that can be compared across every game. A character’s demonstrated capability is tied to a particular campaign, control scheme, difficulty setting, and version. A trained agent may have a different narrative background from a civilian survivor, but the player’s experience is also determined by inventory rules, enemy pressure, weapon availability, puzzles, and perspective.
The official PlayStation introduction to Resident Evil describes the series as a combination of action, exploration, resource management, investigation, combat, and puzzles. Those systems provide better comparison points than an invented universal ranking. Conserving ammunition, choosing when to fight, searching rooms for key items, organizing an inventory, and deciding whether to evade or investigate are all practical skills the player must exercise.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
- Experience and role: a rookie or civilian survivor faces a different story premise from a trained operative or established government agent.
- Campaign pressure: some games stress escape and scarcity, while others give the player heavier combat, crafting, or organized bioterror-response objectives.
- Perspective: Ethan’s two lead games are presented in first person, creating a closer visual and spatial relationship with threats than the series’ other campaign structures.
- Combat mechanics: weapon choice, melee, parries, stealth takedowns, crowd management, crafting, and inventory organization must be attributed to the specific game where they appear.
- Story function: a protagonist may be trying to escape, rescue someone, investigate an outbreak, or stop a coordinated bioterror operation.
Remakes can change available actions, enemy behavior, routes, and pacing. When comparing a remake with an original, name the version rather than treating the character’s mechanics as permanent franchise-wide abilities.
Resident Evil protagonists at a glance
This is a selected overview of the principal game touchpoints covered by the official franchise guide, not a complete list of every spin-off, extra mode, cameo, or playable appearance.
| Protagonist | Main game touchpoints | Role and arc | Useful play-style lens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chris Redfield | Resident Evil; Resident Evil Code: Veronica; Resident Evil 5; Resident Evil 6 | Recurring trained operative whose campaigns increasingly place him in organized responses to bioterror threats. | Compare his campaign role and action emphasis in each game, not a supposed permanent strength score. |
| Jill Valentine | Resident Evil; Resident Evil 3; Resident Evil Revelations | S.T.A.R.S. survivor and recurring field operative. Her stories include escape, investigation, and searches for teammates. | Resident Evil 3 foregrounds solo escape and survival; Revelations places her in a search for Chris. |
| Leon S. Kennedy | Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil 4; Resident Evil 6 | His arc moves from rookie police officer during the Raccoon City outbreak to experienced government agent. | Contrast the survival-focused Raccoon City setting with later, more combat-heavy depictions. |
| Claire Redfield | Resident Evil 2; Resident Evil Code: Veronica; Resident Evil Revelations 2 | Civilian survivor who becomes a capable lead through several outbreak and rescue stories. | Her campaigns foreground survival, investigation, and rescue, making a useful contrast with trained-agent narratives. |
| Ethan Winters | Resident Evil 7 Biohazard; Resident Evil Village | An ordinary-person viewpoint placed inside intensely personal bioweapon and survival situations. | First-person presentation makes threats immediate; exploration, resource choices, and action all remain important. |
The game pairings and premise summaries are drawn from PlayStation’s franchise guide. Capcom’s Resident Evil Revelations PlayStation 4 manual describes Jill and Chris as S.T.A.R.S./BSAA survivors, while Capcom’s Leon Kennedy character profile describes Leon’s survival and combat skills and his later government-agent role.

Where Chris appears in the comparison
Chris is a lead or major playable figure in the original Resident Evil, Code: Veronica, Resident Evil 5, and Resident Evil 6. The important through-line is professional experience: Chris is framed as a trained operative rather than someone discovering the outbreak for the first time. That background changes the story’s purpose, but it does not erase the game systems that still govern his campaigns.
How his play style changes by game
The original game uses investigation, key-item routing, puzzle solving, and limited resources to make every room a decision. Code: Veronica retains survival-horror pressures while expanding the scale of the scenario. Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 put more emphasis on sustained combat and organized responses, so comparing Chris in those titles with Chris in the original is a comparison of campaign design as much as character fiction.
It is therefore accurate to call Chris a recurring trained operative, but not to claim that he has one identical move set or a measurable superiority over every other protagonist.

- FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.

Jill Valentine: escape, investigation, and field survival
Jill in the original outbreak
Jill shares the original Resident Evil with Chris. The mansion scenario makes her role legible through play: explore interconnected rooms, identify clues, solve environmental problems, and ration ammunition while deciding which threats can be bypassed. Her S.T.A.R.S. background explains why she can function under pressure, while the mechanics determine what the player actually does minute by minute.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Resident Evil 3 gives Jill a solo escape-and-survival focus. Pursuit, route choice, combat decisions, and scarce resources create a different rhythm from a slower investigation built around returning to a safe room for key items. The comparison is not that Jill suddenly receives a universal new ability; it is that the campaign asks the player to apply her field competence under more immediate pursuit.
Resident Evil Revelations
In Revelations, Jill’s objective includes searching for Chris. The story frames her as a recurring field operative, while the campaign combines investigation, exploration, and combat. The Capcom manual’s S.T.A.R.S./BSAA description supports that role, but it does not provide a numerical rating that can be used to rank Jill against Chris, Leon, Claire, or Ethan.
Leon S. Kennedy: from Raccoon City rookie to veteran agent
Resident Evil 2: survival under unfamiliar conditions
Leon begins Resident Evil 2 as a rookie police officer caught in the Raccoon City outbreak. The setting emphasizes searching, puzzle solving, investigation, inventory management, and careful ammunition use. His inexperience is a story premise, not a claim that the player cannot fight; the campaign teaches the player to make progress while resources and safe routes are uncertain.
Resident Evil 4: a more action-oriented campaign
By Resident Evil 4, Leon is an established government agent. The campaign’s combat-forward structure makes weapon handling, positioning, crowd control, and reaction speed more visible than in his Raccoon City debut. This is why “Leon is stronger in Resident Evil 4” is an imprecise statement: the game gives the player a different combat environment and a more experienced story role, but it does not establish a cross-series measurement.

Resident Evil 6
Resident Evil 6 features both Leon and Chris. Their campaigns let readers compare contrasting story functions inside one release: Leon’s investigation and agent perspective alongside Chris’s organized bioterror-response role. Because the game is built around more overt action, its mechanics should not be used as a description of how either character plays in every other title.

- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.

Claire Redfield: civilian survival, rescue, and adaptability
Her starting point
Claire is introduced as a civilian survivor in Resident Evil 2. That framing is valuable precisely because it differs from Chris’s and Jill’s professional backgrounds. Claire’s competence is demonstrated through persistence, investigation, resource use, and problem solving while she navigates an outbreak, not through a published combat statistic.
From Code: Veronica to Revelations 2
Code: Veronica continues Claire’s role as a capable lead in an outbreak story, while Resident Evil Revelations 2 places her in a campaign centered on survival and rescue. Those objectives affect pacing and priorities: reaching another person, finding a route out, and managing supplies can matter as much as defeating an enemy. Claire is consequently a strong comparison point for readers who want survival-horror problem solving rather than a trained-agent power fantasy.
Ethan Winters: first-person immediacy and resource decisions
Resident Evil 7 Biohazard
Ethan leads Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, presented from a first-person perspective. Seeing threats at close range and navigating spaces from Ethan’s eye line changes the feel of exploration and pursuit. The campaign still relies on the series’ core decisions: search rooms, recognize clues, conserve ammunition, choose when to fight, and solve environmental problems.

Resident Evil Village continues Ethan’s first-person storyline while combining horror with more overt action. The result is not simply “less survival horror”; it is a campaign where exploration, inventory choices, combat, and resource management coexist. Ethan’s ordinary-person viewpoint makes his reactions and vulnerability central to the experience, but the player’s available tools remain specific to Village rather than universal Ethan abilities.
Five systems that make campaigns feel different
1. Resource management
Ammunition, healing items, key items, and inventory space force prioritization. A campaign that provides more firearms or crafting materials can feel more action-oriented even when the protagonist’s fictional background has not changed. Conversely, scarcity makes route planning and avoidance more valuable.
2. Exploration and investigation
Returning to previously visited rooms, reading clues, finding keys, and recognizing how locations connect are core survival-horror skills. They are especially prominent in the Raccoon City and mansion settings, where progress depends on information as much as firepower.

- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
3. Puzzle structure
Puzzles turn observation and item use into progression. They also prevent a character comparison from becoming a shooting comparison: a campaign can test the player’s ability to interpret symbols, combine objects, and remember locations even when combat is available.
4. Combat, melee, and crowd pressure
Weapon selection, aiming, enemy positioning, melee opportunities, and deciding whether to engage a group shape action-heavy campaigns. These mechanics should always be named with the relevant game because a knife, parry, dodge, or melee option in one release cannot automatically be assigned to every appearance of that protagonist.
5. Perspective and story objective
First-person presentation in Ethan’s games creates a different sense of proximity from other campaign structures. Separately, an escape objective, a rescue mission, an investigation, and an organized bioterror operation produce different priorities even when all four include combat.

A January 26, 2026 PlayStation Blog hands-on report describes Leon’s sections of Resident Evil Requiem as combat-focused and closer to the action of the Resident Evil 4 remake. The same report contrasts them with Grace Ashcroft’s emphasis on evasion, puzzles, and resource management.
According to that dated report, Leon uses firearms, grenades, and a combat hatchet. The hatchet supports parries and stealth takedowns; Leon can craft items; and his inventory uses a larger grid. These are Requiem-specific reported mechanics, not a definitive list of what Leon can do in every game.

Director Kōshi Nakanishi explained the weapon change this way:
Best Value
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

“it was another way that the team wanted to show that Leon now has a lot more experience [fighting bio-weapons] than he did in previous games…so that was why they ended up changing the knife to a hatchet.”
Nakanishi also described the emotional burden behind the portrayal:
“He’s been fighting biohazards since RE2 where he got his sudden start there. Now it’s been close to 30 years of Leon’s life that he’s been doing that. He’s seen a lot of sacrifice, a lot of tragedy. He couldn’t save everyone in RE2 or RE4. He’s seen a lot. He’s been through a lot. So that’s a weight that weighs down on him.”

Those statements are the director’s explanation of how Requiem portrays Leon. They support an interpretation of accumulated experience and loss; they are not an independently measured ability score.
Can one protagonist be called the strongest?
Not on the evidence available here. The reviewed official material supplies roles, game premises, perspectives, and mechanics, but no standardized strength, speed, durability, win-rate, or combat-performance statistic covering the whole franchise. Chris’s trained-operator framing, Leon’s agent experience, Jill’s field work, Claire’s survival adaptability, and Ethan’s endurance answer different story and gameplay needs.
A fair comparison says which campaign gives the player more combat tools, which one applies more scarcity, and which protagonist’s story centers on rescue, escape, investigation, or organized response. It does not convert those differences into a definitive ranking.
Which protagonist and game fit a particular play style?
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Classic investigation, puzzles, and careful resource use | Resident Evil or Resident Evil 2 | The mansion and Raccoon City settings make exploration, key items, and ammunition decisions central. |
| A solo escape-and-survival focus | Resident Evil 3 | Jill’s campaign places pursuit and getting out alive at the center of the experience. |
| A civilian-survivor and rescue perspective | Resident Evil 2 with Claire, or Resident Evil Revelations 2 | Claire’s stories foreground survival, investigation, and helping others rather than an established-agent setup. |
| More combat-forward Leon gameplay | Resident Evil 4; the reported Leon sections of Resident Evil Requiem | These depictions emphasize experienced-agent combat; Requiem specifically reports firearms, grenades, a hatchet, crafting, stealth takedowns, and grid inventory. |
| First-person horror with exploration and action | Resident Evil 7 Biohazard or Resident Evil Village | Ethan’s campaigns use first-person presentation while retaining resource and exploration decisions. |
Choose the specific edition or remake before comparing mechanics. A remake may give the same protagonist different movement, melee, enemy, or inventory options, so the version is part of the answer.
A practical comparison checklist
When deciding whether two protagonists “play” differently, ask these questions in order:
- Which exact game and edition are being compared?
- Is the character a rookie, civilian survivor, trained operative, or established agent in that story?
- Is the primary pressure scarcity, pursuit, investigation, rescue, or sustained combat?
- What tools does that game actually provide: firearms, melee, parries, stealth, crafting, or special inventory rules?
- How much of progression comes from finding clues and solving puzzles rather than defeating enemies?
- Does the perspective—first person or another campaign presentation—change how close threats feel?
- Are you describing a player mechanic, a narrative trait, or a director’s interpretation? Keep those categories separate.
Using that checklist produces a useful comparison without pretending that the series has a single protagonist stat sheet. Chris, Jill, Leon, Claire, and Ethan are best understood through the campaigns they lead: their roles establish context, while each game’s systems determine the skills the player must actually use.
