Start with Resident Evil (HD Remaster) if you want the clearest introduction to the series’ original story, fixed-camera survival-horror design and resource management. Choose Resident Evil 4 first if you would rather have faster, over-the-shoulder third-person action. The best choice depends less on release order than on the kind of tension and combat you enjoy.
Quick answer: the best first Resident Evil on Switch
| Game | Best first for | Core style | Story position | Internet requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil (HD Remaster) | Newcomers who want the series foundation | Classic survival horror, fixed-camera exploration, scarce resources | The first numbered story | Local Switch software; no cloud streaming requirement is stated |
| Resident Evil 4 | Players who prefer modern action | Over-the-shoulder third-person combat and faster pacing | A later mainline story after the early games | Local Switch software; no cloud streaming requirement is stated |
| Resident Evil Revelations | Players who want Jill and Chris in a side-story structure | Survival horror with limited ammunition and weapons | Between Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5 | Local Switch software; no cloud streaming requirement is stated |
| Resident Evil Revelations 2 | Players interested in Claire, Moira and cooperative play | Episode-based survival horror with cooperative elements | A separate later story centered on Claire and Moira | Local Switch software; no cloud streaming requirement is stated |
| Resident Evil 2 Cloud | Players who specifically want that remake and have dependable internet | Cloud-streamed survival horror | A remake of an early numbered entry | Fast, stable and permanent internet connection required |
This ranking is an editorial recommendation based on Nintendo’s descriptions of the games. Nintendo’s series overview (2022) says Switch has numbered entries from Resident Evil 0 through Resident Evil Village, including the HD Remaster and Resident Evil 4. Exact eShop availability, editions and language options can differ by country.
Why Resident Evil (HD Remaster) is the strongest general starting point
It establishes the series’ story foundation
Nintendo describes Resident Evil (HD Remaster) as a high-definition remake of the first entry. That makes it the most direct way to meet the setting, characters and outbreak premise that later games repeatedly reference. You are not beginning with a spin-off, a mid-series detour or a sequel that assumes you already know the world.
The game’s importance is not only historical. Its mansion investigation introduces the deliberate rhythm that defines classic Resident Evil: search rooms, read documents, solve environmental puzzles, decide which items deserve inventory space and return through previously visited areas when a new key opens a route. The story and mechanics reinforce one another, so the game teaches the series’ logic while it tells its first major incident.

It teaches survival-horror decision making
The HD Remaster is built around tension rather than constant combat. Ammunition, healing items and inventory slots are finite enough that careless shooting or carrying every object can make the next area harder. Enemies are threats to manage, not targets to clear automatically. Learning when to fight, evade or retreat is part of the intended experience.
Its fixed-camera presentation can feel unfamiliar if you have only played modern third-person games. Camera angles are composed for suspense and discovery rather than unrestricted aiming. Movement and encounters therefore reward planning: check the room, identify exits, listen for danger and avoid spending resources merely because an enemy is visible.
When it may not be your best first game
Choose another entry first if fixed cameras, slower backtracking or classic inventory constraints sound frustrating rather than appealing. The HD Remaster is a foundation, not the fastest demonstration of what the series became. A player seeking immediate, responsive shooting may have a better first experience with Resident Evil 4.

When Resident Evil 4 should come first
The camera and pacing are built for action
Nintendo highlights Resident Evil 4’s over-the-shoulder camera as a major shift from the earlier fixed-camera games. That viewpoint keeps your character and threats in the same readable space, making aiming, positioning and movement central to each encounter. The result is a more action-focused third-person game with a quicker tempo than the HD Remaster.
If you search for “Resident Evil 4 Nintendo Switch,” this is the entry most likely to match expectations for a modern console action game: direct aiming, frequent combat and set-piece momentum. It still uses the series’ horror setting and resource decisions, but its pressure comes more often from enemy groups and combat choices than from simply entering an uncertain room.
Its story works as a new-player entry, with context limits
The premise is easy to understand on its own: Leon investigates a kidnapping after Umbrella’s dissolution. You do not need to complete the first game to follow that mission. However, starting here means encountering a later version of the series’ world and characters before seeing the original incident that the HD Remaster establishes.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

That is a trade-off rather than a barrier. Start with Resident Evil 4 for its play style, then return to the HD Remaster when you want to see the survival-horror structure that came before this camera and combat shift. Start with the HD Remaster first when continuity and historical progression matter more than speed.
Where the Revelations games fit
Resident Evil Revelations: a resource-conscious side story
Nintendo places Resident Evil Revelations between Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield lead the story, and Nintendo specifically describes limited ammunition and weapons. That combination makes it a useful choice for players who want a more constrained, suspense-oriented experience than Resident Evil 4 while still using a later-era presentation.
It is not the cleanest first game for someone who wants the earliest story context, because its position assumes a series that has already developed beyond the original incident. It can, however, be a good first purchase for a returning fan who wants Jill and Chris, or for a newcomer who values resource pressure but does not want the HD Remaster’s older presentation.

Resident Evil Revelations 2: Claire, Moira and cooperation
Resident Evil Revelations 2 follows Claire Redfield and Moira Burton after an attack on Terra Save. Nintendo describes cooperative play elements, so it is the entry to consider when playing with another person is part of your decision. Its character pairing and scenario structure give it a different emphasis from the Jill-and-Chris story in the first Revelations.
Do not pick it solely because it has “Revelations” in the title. It is a separate story with its own characters and situation, not a replacement for the first game’s role between Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5. It is best as a targeted choice for Claire fans or players who want cooperative elements, rather than as the universal introduction.

Resident Evil 2 Cloud: the internet decision
Cloud streaming changes the requirement
The Nintendo Switch cloud edition of Resident Evil 2 released on 11 November 2022. Nintendo states: “This game uses cloud streaming technology. A fast, stable and permanent internet connection is required to play it.” The game is therefore different from a locally installed Switch release: play quality depends on the connection between your console and the streaming service, not only on the console’s storage and hardware.

Use the free demo before buying
Nintendo advises testing the free demo to check connection quality before purchase. This is especially important on wireless networks, shared household connections or internet services that vary by time of day. A connection that is adequate for browsing may still produce input delay, image degradation or interruptions during streaming.
If offline play is important, do not choose the cloud edition as your first game. The cloud requirement remains even after purchase; downloading the software does not turn it into a conventional offline installation.

Choose by the experience you want
Pick the HD Remaster if you want classic tension
- You want the earliest story foundation.
- You enjoy puzzles, exploration and deciding whether to spend ammunition.
- You are comfortable with fixed-camera presentation and deliberate backtracking.
- You want a locally installed game rather than a cloud service.
Pick Resident Evil 4 if you want immediate action
- You prefer an over-the-shoulder camera.
- You want more frequent combat and faster momentum.
- You are willing to learn the series through a later story about Leon’s investigation.
- You want the clearest modern-action entry point.
Pick Revelations if character or chronology points to it
- Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield are your priority.
- You want a story set between Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5.
- You prefer limited ammunition and weapons without beginning with the first game.
Pick Revelations 2 for Claire and cooperative elements
- You specifically want Claire Redfield and Moira Burton.
- You plan to use the game’s cooperative features.
- You are looking for a separate scenario rather than the original series introduction.
Pick Resident Evil 2 Cloud only after checking your connection
- You specifically want that cloud edition.
- Your connection is stable enough for continuous streaming.
- You have tested Nintendo’s free demo and are comfortable with the result.
Three sensible play orders
Story-foundation route
- Begin with Resident Evil (HD Remaster) to learn the original setting and survival-horror structure.
- Move to Resident Evil 4 to experience the series’ over-the-shoulder action shift.
- Play Resident Evil Revelations when you want Jill and Chris in a story positioned between 4 and 5.
- Continue with Resident Evil Revelations 2 for Claire, Moira and its cooperative elements.
Action-first route
- Start with Resident Evil 4 if camera control and combat responsiveness are your priorities.
- Try the HD Remaster afterward to understand the earlier fixed-camera design and resource economy.
- Choose either Revelations title according to whether Jill and Chris or Claire and Moira are the stronger draw.
Connection-conscious route
- Choose a locally installed title, such as the HD Remaster, Resident Evil 4 or a Revelations game.
- Reserve Resident Evil 2 Cloud for a setup that passes the demo’s connection test.
Before you buy: a practical Switch checklist
- Confirm the exact edition. “Resident Evil 2 Cloud” is not interchangeable with a locally installed release. Read the Nintendo eShop title and platform details carefully.
- Check your country’s listing. Nintendo says availability and eShop details are region-specific, so do not assume that another country’s page reflects your account.
- Compare the control style. Fixed-camera survival horror favors observation and resource planning; Resident Evil 4 favors over-the-shoulder aiming and action.
- Plan storage. Nintendo UK lists 12.1 GB for Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Revelations; verify the current regional listing before downloading.
- Test streaming if applicable. Run the free Resident Evil 2 Cloud demo on the same network and in the same place where you intend to play.
- Decide whether cooperation matters. If another player is part of the plan, Revelations 2 is the relevant choice among these entries because Nintendo describes cooperative play elements.
Bottom line
For most first-time players, Resident Evil (HD Remaster) is the right starting point because it presents the original story and the series’ defining survival-horror decisions in their clearest form. For a faster, action-led introduction, start with Resident Evil 4. Treat Revelations and Revelations 2 as character- and structure-specific alternatives, and choose Resident Evil 2 Cloud only when Nintendo’s connection test shows that streaming will be reliable.
