Resident Evil and Silent Hill are still active, commercially significant horror franchises—but the evidence supports that narrower claim, not that every major series is thriving or that horror games are more successful than ever. Capcom reports a record-fast sales milestone for the latest Resident Evil, while Konami reports major milestones for two Silent Hill games and says more entries are in development.
Are horror games making a comeback?
There is strong evidence that two influential legacy series remain relevant. Capcom’s Resident Evil has a new 2026 release and publisher-reported sales growth; Konami’s Silent Hill has a 2025 entry, a successful remake, and announced projects in development. That is a meaningful sign of activity, but it is not a market-wide trend measurement. The available figures come from the publishers, use different accounting measures, and do not establish a definitive ranking of horror franchises.
What shows that Resident Evil is still thriving?
A fast start for Resident Evil Requiem
Resident Evil Requiem launched on February 27, 2026. Capcom announced on March 16 that it had sold more than six million units worldwide, calling it the fastest title in the series to reach that milestone. The publisher lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Capcom also says it plans ongoing support and additional game content. Capcom’s announcement describes the game as survival horror, a style built around using weapons and items to get through dangerous situations.
A large back catalog, not just one new hit
Capcom’s game-series sales page reports 213.0 million cumulative Resident Evil units as of June 30, 2026. That is the newer figure for the franchise’s overall scale. Capcom’s March 2026 Requiem announcement gives an older total of more than 183 million units as of December 31, 2025; the dates matter, so the two totals should not be treated as competing estimates from the same point in time.

Capcom’s fiscal-year reporting says Resident Evil accounted for more than half of the company’s total unit sales for the year ended March 31, 2026, and that catalog sales continued to perform strongly. This is evidence of importance within Capcom’s own business—not a claim that the series made up half of all game sales. Capcom’s fiscal-year reporting is the basis for that statement.
Is Silent Hill back?
Konami’s recent releases and development plans support saying that Silent Hill is active again. SILENT HILL f, released September 25, 2025, is described by Konami as a psychological-horror game set in Japan. The publisher announced more than two million worldwide cumulative shipments on May 13, 2026. It lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games, and Microsoft Store. Konami’s milestone announcement provides the release and platform details.

The SILENT HILL 2 remake also reached a major milestone. Konami reported more than five million worldwide cumulative players or units as of January 31, 2026, across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Its measure includes physical and digital sales, store downloads, and subscription services, so it should not be described as five million copies sold in the narrower retail sense. Konami’s announcement explains what the figure counts.

Resident Evil and Silent Hill: two different kinds of horror
The series’ current strength does not mean they offer the same experience. Capcom characterizes Resident Evil as survival horror, with danger managed through weapons and items. Konami characterizes SILENT HILL f as psychological horror. One emphasizes surviving immediate threats; the other foregrounds psychological unease. These descriptions are useful orientation, not a rule that every game in either franchise follows one formula.
| Series | Current evidence of activity | Reported milestone | Platforms listed by publisher |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil | Resident Evil Requiem launched February 27, 2026; additional content is planned. | More than six million worldwide sales for Requiem, announced March 16, 2026; 213.0 million cumulative series units as of June 30, 2026. | For Requiem: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. |
| Silent Hill | SILENT HILL f launched September 25, 2025; a first-game remake and SILENT HILL: Townfall are in development, according to Konami. | More than two million worldwide cumulative shipments for SILENT HILL f, announced May 13, 2026. The SILENT HILL 2 remake’s more than five million milestone includes sales, downloads, and subscription services, as of January 31, 2026. | SILENT HILL f: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Epic Games, and Microsoft Store. SILENT HILL 2: PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. |
The figures in the table are not a head-to-head sales comparison: Capcom reports Requiem sales and cumulative series units, Konami reports SILENT HILL f shipments, and the SILENT HILL 2 milestone includes subscription services and downloads. Each should be read in its own stated terms.

Which horror game series should you play?
Choose based on the kind of tension you want, rather than franchise sales totals. If you want survival horror built around managing weapons and items, start with a Resident Evil game; Resident Evil Requiem is the newest entry in the evidence covered here. If psychological horror and a Japan-set story appeal to you, SILENT HILL f is a recent entry. For a return to the series’ earlier material, Konami’s SILENT HILL 2 remake is another current option. Check the platform list for the specific game before buying, since availability differs by title.

The clearest conclusion is that Resident Evil and Silent Hill are commercially significant, creatively active franchises with recent releases and further work announced. The evidence does not establish that every major horror series is thriving, that the genre as a whole is experiencing a measurable comeback, or that these franchises are more vital than at any earlier point in their histories. Nor should publisher-reported figures be treated as an independent comparison across the industry.
