By one horror-first measure, seven Resident Evil protagonists can make a stronger lead than Leon Kennedy: they give the player more vulnerability, more intimate stakes, or a perspective that better suits survival horror. That is an editorial yardstick, not an objective ranking. Leon’s training and competence are a major asset when the series leans into action; they can also make danger feel less immediate than it does for a less prepared character.

Ethan Winters is the clearest case for this argument. The other six entries are comparisons based on the kind of horror or character experience they can offer, not a claim that every one is more frightening or better written in every game.

What “better than Leon” means here

This list values a protagonist’s fit for horror: how exposed they feel, how personal their immediate goal is, and whether their point of view gives a game a distinct identity. It does not measure combat ability, popularity, or a universal level of writing quality. The comparison also depends on the game and version; a remake, a mainline entry, and a co-op game can present the same character differently.

Leon’s competence is not a flaw in itself. It supports the action-focused side of Resident Evil and makes him an appealing hero. The case for these alternatives is narrower: when vulnerability is the priority, a capable agent can make a threat feel less unsettling than an ordinary person facing it.

1. Ethan Winters — the strongest horror-first alternative

Ethan is the most direct counterpoint to Leon because his appeal as a horror protagonist rests on being an ordinary civilian rather than an established action hero. In GameSpot’s February 9, 2026 feature, Hayes Madsen frames Ethan through his relationships with Mia and Rose, and contrasts his personal stakes with characters associated with police or militarized agencies. Madsen’s summary is: “Sometimes, horror games don’t need an action hero; they just need a dude.”

That personal scale fits Resident Evil 7: Biohazard’s horror-focused approach. PC Gamer critic Andy Kelly argues that the game’s ordinary-person viewpoint makes it scarier: “Playing as a normal person makes it scarier too.” Kelly adds, “You feel more vulnerable as Ethan than you ever did as the cocky, capable Leon Kennedy or the ludicrously muscled Chris Redfield.” These are critics’ assessments, not a measured comparison or an official Capcom position. Read Kelly’s retrospective on Resident Evil 7 for his broader account of the game’s first-person perspective and horror pacing.

  • End of Zoe is a shocking instalment of the Resident Evil 7 biohazard saga where players discover what Zoe's fate will be. Players will face off against new enemies and explore new swamp filled areas

  • As a member of New Umbrella, Chris and team quickly set up a strategy to counter this latest threat. Will Chris once again solve the mystery of this latest outbreak?
  • Battery: no battery used

Ethan’s advantage is therefore specific: his personal motivation and less capable presentation can make danger feel immediate in a way Leon’s action-hero skill set does not. If the question is which protagonist most clearly serves vulnerability-centered horror, Ethan is the strongest answer.

Six other candidates, depending on what you value

The following characters can make a case against Leon under different criteria, but they are not a definitive order. Their relative strength depends on the particular installment, version, and kind of horror experience a reader values. The comparison below stays at the level of those criteria rather than treating a character’s inclusion as proof of a specific plot or skill claim.

2. Jill Valentine — for survival-horror framing

Jill is a natural comparison when the priority is a survival-focused lead rather than Leon’s more overt action-hero identity. The case should be made through the specific Resident Evil game and version being discussed: original releases and remakes are not interchangeable evidence for how a character or scenario is presented. Jill is a plausible alternative, but the available critical coverage does not establish that she is categorically more vulnerable or better written than Leon.

3. Claire Redfield — for a more personal perspective

Claire can be considered when the preferred protagonist is framed around personal stakes and a perspective distinct from a trained-agent template. That comparison needs to stay tied to the particular installment; without that context, it would overstate what can be said about her motivations or development across the series. She is an alternative for readers who value a different point of view, not a universal upgrade over Leon.

4. Chris Redfield — for resilience and franchise presence

Chris is a less obvious choice if vulnerability is the sole test. Kelly’s description of him as “ludicrously muscled” captures why a highly capable presentation may reduce fear. His potential case instead rests on valuing resilience or a prominent role in the franchise. That is a different standard from Ethan’s ordinary-person vulnerability, and it should not be confused with being a more effective horror lead in every game.

5. Rebecca Chambers — for a resourcefulness-centered lead

Rebecca is worth considering if resourcefulness is more appealing than Leon’s established action-hero persona. The comparison is strongest when grounded in the relevant game and its portrayal of her, rather than making broad claims about her skills or character arc across the franchise. On the available evidence, she is a candidate for this kind of list, not a firmly sourced conclusion about superiority.

6. Sheva Alomar — for a partnership-centered experience

Sheva offers a different comparison when the appeal is a protagonist within a partnership and a co-op-centered game. Co-op format alone does not make a character better; it changes how the player experiences the lead and the threat. Whether that suits a reader more than Leon depends on whether collaboration is part of what they want from a Resident Evil protagonist.

7. Billy Coen — for a distinct, single-game scenario

Billy is a candidate for readers who prefer a lead associated with a particular survival scenario rather than a recurring action-hero identity. That distinction can make a character feel fresh, but it does not by itself prove a stronger arc or a scarier experience. The case is necessarily tied to Resident Evil 0 and should be judged in that game’s context.

How to choose the right comparison

  • For the strongest vulnerability argument: choose Ethan; the cited critics directly connect his ordinary-person viewpoint with greater fear.
  • For an action-oriented hero: Leon’s competence is part of his appeal, not something the horror-first comparison needs to dismiss.
  • For a different game or format: identify the installment and version first, especially when discussing remakes or co-op play.
  • For a character ranking: separate personal preference from evidence. The available coverage supports the Ethan-versus-Leon horror comparison; it does not establish a definitive seven-character order or audience consensus.
