If the lithographic door in Resident Evil 4 Remake will not open, reset all four stones and place them in the fixed Chapter 8 Bindery arrangement: orange helmet in a hexagon on the left, orange shield in a square at the top, blue sword in a square on the right, and blue armor in a hexagon at the bottom. The icon and its border shape must both match. If the door remains unresponsive, leave the room, pass through a loading transition, and return; players report that this reloads the puzzle state.
What the lithographic stone puzzle is
This puzzle appears in the Bindery during Chapter 8. Four lithographic stones fit into four positions around the door mechanism. Each stone face combines two clues: a colored picture and a border shape. A stone is not correct merely because its color or picture looks right; the square or hexagon border must also match the slot’s requirement.

PowerPyx and VGC report the same final arrangement. The rooms where individual stones are found can differ between playthroughs, but the completed pattern does not.
The correct four-stone arrangement
| Slot | Picture | Color | Border |
|---|---|---|---|
| Left | Helmet | Orange | Hexagon |
| Top | Shield | Orange | Square |
| Right | Sword | Blue | Square |
| Bottom | Armor | Blue | Hexagon |
Read the table as a face-and-border match: the left slot needs an orange helmet inside a hexagon, not just any orange helmet; the top needs an orange shield inside a square; the right needs a blue sword inside a square; and the bottom needs blue armor inside a hexagon.
#1 Best Overall
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

How to reset the symbols and insert the stones
- Return to the Bindery mechanism. Stand at the lithographic door so you can access all four slots.
- Remove every inserted stone. Do not try to correct only the symbol that looks wrong. Starting with an empty set of slots makes it easier to verify the complete pattern.
- Show the required face on each stone. Remove and reinsert a stone if the picture is turned away or the wrong face is visible.
- Place the orange helmet in the left slot. Confirm that its frame is a hexagon.
- Place the orange shield in the top slot. Confirm that its frame is a square.
- Place the blue sword in the right slot. Confirm that its frame is a square.
- Place the blue armor in the bottom slot. Confirm that its frame is a hexagon.
- Inspect each slot before leaving the mechanism. Check the picture, color, and border on all four stones. One incorrect border prevents the combination from counting.
The door should respond once all four faces satisfy their positions. If it does not, use the room-reload procedure below instead of repeatedly changing a correct arrangement.
Why a correct-looking solution can fail
The border shape is wrong
The most common mistake is matching the picture or color while overlooking the frame. The orange helmet belongs in a hexagon on the left, whereas the orange shield belongs in a square at the top. The same distinction applies to the blue sword and blue armor: sword is square and armor is hexagon.

The wrong face is showing
A stone can be in the right physical slot while displaying the wrong face. Remove and reinsert it so the required picture and border are visible, then check the other three stones again.

The four stones were arranged from a different room layout
Pickup locations are not guaranteed to look identical in every playthrough or difficulty. That variation affects where you search, not the final order in the door. Use the icon-and-border arrangement rather than trying to copy a pickup order.
Reset the puzzle by reloading the Bindery room
If the correct combination produces no reaction, players report a practical state reset:
- Leave the Bindery puzzle room.
- Continue far enough to trigger a loading transition.
- Return to the room.
- Remove and reinsert the stones using the left, top, right, and bottom arrangement.
This is a community-reported workaround for an unresponsive puzzle state, not an official Capcom repair procedure. The loading transition is important because simply walking around inside the same room may not reload the puzzle state.

Where to look for a missing lithographic stone
When one stone appears to be missing, search the entire Bindery rather than assuming its usual location. Community walkthroughs report that placements can vary by playthrough and difficulty. Check these areas:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The glass case
- The cupboard
- The fireplace area
- The cloth-covered back area
Inspect each area for an uncollected stone, then return to the mechanism and verify its visible face and border. A stone that is present but showing the wrong face can look like the wrong item, so check the face before concluding that the room failed to spawn it.
When a stone still does not appear
If the stone is not in any of the listed areas, or the door remains stuck after a room reload, use an earlier save and replay the section. This is another community recovery step rather than a documented official fix. After reloading, search the glass case, cupboard, fireplace area, and cloth-covered back area again, then rebuild the fixed arrangement from an empty set of slots.
Troubleshooting decision table
| What you see | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| A picture seems correct, but the slot does not count it | Whether the border is the required square or hexagon | Remove and reinsert the stone with the matching border visible |
| The stone is installed, but its face looks wrong | Whether the required picture is showing | Remove and reinsert it so the correct face is displayed |
| All four entries match, but the door does not react | Whether the room state has become unresponsive | Leave the room, trigger a loading transition, return, and enter the pattern again |
| A stone cannot be found | The glass case, cupboard, fireplace area, and cloth-covered back area | Search the full room; locations can vary by playthrough or difficulty |
| The stone is still absent or the puzzle remains stuck | An earlier save from before the Bindery sequence | Reload the earlier save or replay the section |
Fast checklist before you reload a save
- Left: orange helmet, hexagon.
- Top: orange shield, square.
- Right: blue sword, square.
- Bottom: blue armor, hexagon.
- Every stone is showing the intended face.
- You have checked all four variable search areas.
- You have left and re-entered the room after a loading transition.
If every checklist item is satisfied and the mechanism still does nothing, an earlier-save reload or replay is the practical recovery path reported by players.
