Play Resident Evil 2 (2019) first, then Resident Evil 3 (2020). That is also Capcom USA’s recommendation for newcomers: in an official guide published October 18, 2024, Capcom staff call Resident Evil 2 “a great jumping-on point for the series.” If you care more about in-world chronology than a smooth first playthrough, there is an optional way to split Resident Evil 3 around Resident Evil 2.
Why play Resident Evil 2 first?
The two remakes tell overlapping stories set during the Raccoon City disaster, but they are separate games with different protagonists and points of emphasis. Resident Evil 2 introduces the city’s crisis through Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Resident Evil 3 follows Jill Valentine as she tries to escape, with Nemesis pursuing her.

Starting with Resident Evil 2 gives a new player a clear entry point before moving to the chapter centered on Jill. You do not need to interrupt either game to make the story broadly understandable. Capcom USA’s October 2024 newcomer advice is the most direct answer to the question: begin with Resident Evil 2. The guide says, “If you’re a new player, start out with Resident Evil 2 (2019). It’s a great jumping-on point for the series.” Capcom USA staff are credited, but the guide does not name an individual speaker.
This order is a recommendation, not a requirement. If you have already played one of the games, you can play the other on its own; if you want to arrange them around the events’ timeline, use the optional split order below. The practical benefit of the straightforward order is that you can complete one game’s story, then move on to the other without deciding where to stop midway through a campaign.
#1 Best Overall
- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
There is no need to treat the games as a single continuous campaign. The recommendation is about a convenient first route through two remakes set amid the same citywide crisis, not a rule that one game cannot be enjoyed independently. If Jill is the character or premise that interests you most, starting with Resident Evil 3 is still a reasonable personal choice.
How do the stories overlap?
PlayStation’s official overview says Resident Evil 3 takes place in the hours leading up to and following the events of Resident Evil 2. So the games are not simply two full stories that happen one after the other: Resident Evil 3 begins earlier, then its story continues beyond the part of the crisis covered by Resident Evil 2.
That overlap explains why a chronology-first order is possible, but it does not make it the easiest first-play order. Playing all of Resident Evil 3 before Resident Evil 2 would put the game that starts earlier first, yet would not preserve the timing of the later portion of its story. A split order can follow the timeline more closely, at the cost of pausing one game and returning to it later.

The shared setting is the link, rather than a reason to assume that the games tell the same story. Their focus differs: the RE2 remake presents the crisis through Leon and Claire, while RE3 is Jill’s attempt to get out of Raccoon City as Nemesis pursues her. The chronology is useful if you want to place those perspectives alongside one another, but it does not change Capcom’s advice for a newcomer who wants a simple starting point.
PlayStation’s description of RE3 emphasizes escape, action, exploration, and puzzles. Taken together with the pursuit premise, those details point to a different emphasis from the two-protagonist framing of RE2. They are useful distinctions when choosing a game by mood or focus, but they do not establish a universal ranking: one player may prefer the perspective and setup of RE2, while another may be more drawn to Jill’s escape story.
What is the optional chronological order?
GamesRadar’s March 18, 2026 guide describes a way to play the overlapping stories in sequence: play the opening of Resident Evil 3 until Carlos becomes playable, pause, complete Resident Evil 2, then resume Resident Evil 3. Treat this as an editorial option, not an official required sequence.
- Start Resident Evil 3. Play through its opening section until the point where Carlos becomes playable.
- Pause Resident Evil 3. Switch to Resident Evil 2 rather than continuing Jill’s story at that point.
- Complete Resident Evil 2. Play its story before returning to the later part of Resident Evil 3.
- Resume Resident Evil 3. Continue from your save and finish Jill’s story.
The trade-off is straightforward: the split follows the chronology more closely, but breaks up Resident Evil 3’s narrative flow. If you are new to the remakes or would rather finish one game before starting another, play Resident Evil 2 first and then play Resident Evil 3 from beginning to end.
This option makes most sense for someone who actively wants to follow the overlap, has access to both games, and is comfortable leaving one story unfinished while playing the other. It is not a special mode or a separate edition; it is simply a way to arrange your playthroughs. The suggested transition point is when Carlos becomes playable, but you can choose not to split the game at all if that interruption would make the experience less enjoyable.
Chronology-first and release-order play are not identical ideas here. The games were released in 2019 and 2020, respectively, so playing Resident Evil 2 and then Resident Evil 3 also follows their release order. The split instead responds to the fact that RE3’s story begins before, and continues after, the events of RE2. It is a more involved choice, not a correction needed to understand the games.
Which game fits the experience you want?
| What matters to you | Better starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A straightforward introduction to the remakes | Resident Evil 2 | Capcom USA specifically recommends it as a starting point for new players. |
| Playing one complete story before another | Resident Evil 2, then Resident Evil 3 | This order avoids pausing Jill’s story partway through. |
| Following the overlapping timeline as closely as practical | Begin Resident Evil 3, pause when Carlos becomes playable, play Resident Evil 2, then resume Resident Evil 3 | Resident Evil 3 begins before and continues after the events of Resident Evil 2. |
| Starting with Jill Valentine and a pursuit-and-escape premise | Resident Evil 3 | It centers on Jill’s attempt to escape Raccoon City while Nemesis pursues her. |
| Choosing based on an exact campaign-time estimate | No evidence-backed winner | The cited material does not establish comparable completion times. |
| Considering an included online component | Resident Evil 3 package | It includes Resident Evil Resistance, an asymmetrical one-versus-four online mode. |
The table is about which game to start with, not a universal ranking. A preference for Jill’s story or a chronology-focused playthrough can reasonably outweigh the newcomer recommendation. Likewise, the inclusion of an online mode may matter to a buyer interested in that component, but it is not a reason to assume the mode is the right fit for every player.

If you have only decided to play one game for now, choose according to what appeals to you rather than treating the second game as required homework. RE2 is the clearest default for a new player; RE3 is an understandable pick if Jill’s story, Nemesis’s pursuit, or the package’s Resistance component is what caught your attention. If you plan to play both eventually, the default remains simple: RE2, then RE3.

Resident Evil 2: Leon and Claire’s perspectives
The 2019 remake revisits the 1998 Resident Evil 2. Its central characters are Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, and its story presents the Raccoon City crisis through their perspectives. It is the practical first choice if you want Capcom’s suggested entry point before moving on to Jill’s story.
That distinction gives the first game in the recommended order a clear purpose: it introduces the catastrophe through Leon and Claire, while the next game shifts attention to Jill and her effort to escape. This is a difference in characters and framing, not a claim that the games are interchangeable or that one perspective is inherently better. If a particular protagonist is your main reason for choosing, it is reasonable to follow that interest instead of the default order.
Resident Evil 3: Jill’s escape from Raccoon City
The 2020 game reimagines 1999’s Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Its official description emphasizes action, escape, exploration, and puzzles. Jill is trying to get out of the city while Nemesis hunts her, giving this game a different central setup from Leon and Claire’s story in Resident Evil 2.
PlayStation’s description also identifies an over-the-shoulder camera and updated controls for Resident Evil 3. Those details help describe its presentation, but they do not establish that one remake is objectively better or that every player will prefer the same one. They also should not be turned into a claim that only RE3 has a particular quality unless the game descriptions support that comparison.

The official descriptions support that distinction. They do not provide a side-by-side critic-score comparison, a definitive quality verdict, or a universal answer for every player.
Is Resident Evil 3 much shorter?
GamesRadar’s March 18, 2026 guide characterizes Resident Evil 3 as “far shorter.” That is a broad editorial assessment, not a side-by-side completion-time measurement. The cited material does not provide exact hours, a tested average, or a precise length ratio for the two games.
Accordingly, do not use a specific number of hours to choose your play order. If a shorter experience is your priority, the GamesRadar description may be useful as a general expectation, but it does not establish how long your own playthrough will take. Your route through the game and pace are not accounted for by that description.
Length alone also does not settle which game to play first. The official newcomer recommendation points to RE2, and the story overlap supports an optional split for players focused on chronology. The sources do not give a comparable completion-time estimate that would justify telling every time-conscious player to choose one title over the other. If duration is your deciding factor, treat the qualitative description as a broad signal rather than a promise of a particular number of hours.
What does the Resident Evil 3 package include?
Resident Evil 3 is sold with Resident Evil Resistance, an asymmetrical online multiplayer mode described by PlayStation as one Mastermind facing four Survivors. That is an additional component to consider if you are interested in multiplayer; it does not change the order recommendation for the two main stories.

The package detail should not be mistaken for a guarantee about the present-day experience of an online mode. Its practical value to you depends on your platform, online access, and whether the mode is useful to you when you play. The cited description establishes what Resistance is and how its roles are arranged, not its current player population or service conditions.
Resistance is distinct from the single-player story-order question. A buyer who wants to play Jill’s campaign can still make that choice without making a multiplayer mode the deciding factor. Conversely, a person specifically interested in the one-versus-four format may want to check the current platform listing and online requirements before purchase rather than relying only on a general description of what the package contains.

If you are deciding whether to buy one game or both, the bundle is relevant because the listed Raccoon City Edition contains the two remakes and Resistance. Confirm that the listing is available for your region and the platform you use, and check exactly which edition the store offers. The cited page identifies the bundle contents, but prices and promotions change and should be checked at the time of purchase.
Platform names also deserve a quick check before checkout. Capcom’s 2020 announcement lists PS4, Xbox One, and PC for RE3, while PlayStation’s US page lists PS4 and PS5 editions. Those statements describe the pages and announcements cited; they are not a complete, guaranteed inventory of every current storefront, region, or edition. If you are buying on a particular system, verify its current store listing rather than assuming that an edition or offer is available everywhere.
Capcom producer Tsuyoshi Kanda described the sequence behind the two remakes in a PlayStation Blog post dated June 13, 2022: “After the Resident Evil 2 remake, we set out to revisit the next chapter in the series which once again saw Raccoon City face disaster.” That comment places the remakes in a development sequence; it is not a claim that players must experience them in release order.
Does release order settle the question?
No. Resident Evil 2 came out first, on January 25, 2019, and Resident Evil 3 followed on April 3, 2020, but the reason to begin with Resident Evil 2 is not just that it was released first. Capcom USA names it as a newcomer starting point, while the overlapping story makes a chronological split possible for players who value that more.
Release order is therefore a simple, sensible order for a first run: play Resident Evil 2, then Resident Evil 3. Choose the split only if arranging the games around the story’s timing matters enough to you to interrupt Jill’s campaign.
Capcom’s release history also reflects which remake came first as a product: the RE2 remake arrived in 2019, followed by the RE3 reimagining in 2020. Producer Tsuyoshi Kanda’s 2022 comment describes RE3 as the next chapter revisited after the RE2 remake. That background reinforces the straightforward sequence, but it does not override the in-world chronology PlayStation describes or turn release order into a requirement.

What order should I play the RE2 and RE3 remakes for chronology?
One optional approach is to play the opening of Resident Evil 3 until Carlos becomes playable, pause for Resident Evil 2, then return to RE3. PlayStation says RE3’s events span the hours before and after RE2. The split follows that overlap more closely but interrupts RE3’s story.
Does Resident Evil 3 include an online mode?
Yes. PlayStation describes Resident Evil Resistance as an asymmetrical one-versus-four online multiplayer mode, with one Mastermind and four Survivors. Check the current platform listing and online conditions if the mode is important to your purchase; its inclusion does not determine the order for the main stories.
Which remake is longer?
GamesRadar’s March 18, 2026 guide describes RE3 as “far shorter,” but the cited material does not establish exact completion times or a tested length ratio. Treat that as a broad editorial assessment, not a precise estimate for your playthrough.
Can I buy both remakes in one bundle?
PlayStation’s US page lists a Raccoon City Edition containing Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil Resistance. Check your platform’s current storefront for regional availability, edition contents, and price before buying.
