Resident Evil 5 is the better choice for most couch-co-op sessions. It has documented offline co-op support, while Resident Evil 2 (2019) remains a one-player game officially and needs a community PC mod to add shared-screen or split-screen play. Choose the RE2 Remake route only if experiencing that specific remake together matters more than a supported, low-friction setup.
The short answer
For a pair of players who want to sit down and start a cooperative Resident Evil game, use Resident Evil 5 on an edition that supports its local mode. Capcom describes playing offline with a friend or family member on the couch, and the Windows release received a February 27, 2023 update that added local split-screen support while removing Games for Windows Live. Resident Evil 2 (2019) is a different proposition. Capcom’s PS5 specification lists the game as one-player, so the unmodified game should not be presented as native co-op. A Nexus Mods project called Local Couch Co-op (formally known as HUNK’y Friend) adds community-created local-play modes on PC, but it requires a mod loader, controller configuration and ongoing compatibility checks.

Resident Evil 5: a supported offline mode
Capcom’s description is unusually direct: “Of course, you can play offline with a friend or family member sitting next to you on the couch!” That sentence appears in the Resident Evil Portal article “Share the Scare: Online Co-op in the Resident Evil Series”, published March 5, 2021. It is general series context, but it matches the local-play capability documented for the current Windows release.

The February 27, 2023 Windows announcement matters because it identifies a concrete modern PC baseline: Games for Windows Live was removed and local split-screen co-op was added. If a PC copy behaves like an older installation, check that it has the current game update before changing controller settings or installing unofficial fixes.
Resident Evil 2 Remake: an unofficial layer over a single-player game
The official specification is the boundary to keep in mind. Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 PS5 support page lists one player. The Nexus project does not alter that official player count; it injects new behavior at runtime on a computer.
The mod author’s listing describes several ways to play: shared-screen, split-screen, a fixed-camera option used with another mod, an AI-companion mode and classic modes. Those are community features, not modes guaranteed by Capcom or by every version of the game. The listing also says the latest ReFramework is required and calls out controller compatibility concerns. Treat its mode list and version notes as live documentation that can change.

Setup and support compared
The main difference is not simply screen layout. It is who is responsible when the session fails. With RE5, the publisher supports the feature and the likely fixes are edition, update or input checks. With RE2, the mod author, ReFramework and the underlying game version all have to remain compatible.

How to play Resident Evil 5 in local co-op
1. Confirm the edition before buying or launching
Local features can differ by platform and release. The cited Capcom announcement is specifically for the Windows version, so confirm that the store or disc edition you own is the one covered by the current update. Do not assume that an old disc build, a legacy PC installation or a different regional package has identical menus without checking its update information.
2. Bring the game to the current supported state
On Windows, apply the update described in the February 27, 2023 Steam announcement. It removes the old Games for Windows Live dependency and adds local split-screen support. Restart the game after updating so the platform can finish any file validation or controller re-detection.

3. Prepare two local inputs
Connect the two controllers before entering the co-op session and make sure the operating system or console recognizes each as a separate device. If the second input is not visible, test it outside the game first, then relaunch so the game can enumerate both devices from a clean start. The available controller types and assignment screens depend on the edition; use that edition’s current in-game prompts rather than a guide written for another platform.

4. Start the offline session
Choose the game’s local or offline co-op path and have the second player join when prompted. If the menu offers both online and local choices, select the local option; an internet connection is not what makes this mode work. Keep both players’ devices connected until the session has loaded, because unplugging one during initialization can leave the second profile unassigned.
5. Diagnose a missing second player systematically
- Game will not offer local play: verify the edition and update level, then restart after applying the update.
- Only one controller responds: close other remapping or virtual-controller utilities, reconnect both devices and relaunch.
- The second player joins and immediately drops: test each controller alone, then together, to identify an input or cable problem before changing game files.
- An old installation still asks for Games for Windows Live: it is not at the Windows baseline described in the 2023 announcement; update or reinstall from a supported source.
These checks preserve the advantage of RE5’s supported path: you can troubleshoot the installation without adding an unofficial code layer.

How to use the Resident Evil 2 Remake couch-co-op mod
1. Start with a PC copy of Resident Evil 2 (2019)
The mod is a PC solution. A console copy, including the PS5 edition whose official specification says one player, cannot use these PC files. Make sure the game launches normally in its unmodified state before attempting any installation; otherwise a later failure will be difficult to attribute.
2. Read the live mod page immediately before installing
Open the Local Couch Co-op listing and follow the current file, version and dependency instructions exactly. The page was accessed October 13, 2026 for the description summarized here, but mod pages can change after that date. Do not rely on a downloaded archive’s old read-me if the page has newer requirements.

3. Install ReFramework and the mod’s required files
The listing states that the latest ReFramework is required. Install that framework and the co-op mod in the locations and order specified by the author, then launch once to check that the framework loads before attempting two-player configuration. Because the exact filenames and folder layout can change, copying a path from an old tutorial is riskier than using the current instructions on the listing.

4. Choose a mode deliberately
- Shared-screen: both players occupy one view, which can be less demanding on the display and easier to manage when split-screen reduces visibility.
- Split-screen: each player receives a portion of the display; expect a different field of view and more demanding controller assignment.
- Fixed-camera option: the listing describes this in conjunction with another mod, so it is not a self-contained promise of a classic-camera experience.
- AI-companion and classic modes: these are additional configurations described by the author, not equivalent to Capcom-authored campaigns or a separate official game mode.
5. Assign controllers one at a time
Use the mod’s current controller instructions, connect the first device, verify that its inputs are recognized, and then add the second. Avoid running multiple controller remappers while testing. If both devices appear to control the same character, remove duplicate virtual inputs and repeat the assignment from a fresh launch.
6. Treat the optional controller DLL as a troubleshooting variable
The mod page warns that an optional controller DLL can be associated with startup crashes. If the game stops launching after enabling it, return to the page’s compatibility guidance and undo or adjust that component as directed. Do not keep adding unrelated fixes: first establish whether the unmodified game and ReFramework launch, then reintroduce the optional input component.

Choose RE5 when the platform is flexible
RE5 is the safer purchase for a household that has not committed to a particular remake. Its supported local feature is the product’s central advantage here, and the Windows update gives PC players a documented modern starting point.
