If your Samsung tablet still opens Settings, reset it there. If it is frozen or inaccessible, use the recovery instructions for its exact Galaxy Tab model rather than assuming one button combination works on every tablet. A factory reset erases personal data; back up anything you need first. A restart is different: it closes running apps but does not erase saved data.
Before you reset
A factory reset returns the tablet to its factory settings and removes personal data. Samsung warns that personal information may not be recoverable, so back up photos, documents, and other files you want to keep before proceeding. See Samsung’s factory-reset guidance for its current general instructions.
- If the tablet has an encrypted microSD card, decrypt it before resetting. Samsung says the tablet may not be able to read the card afterward if you do not.
- If you can use the tablet and plan to give it to someone else, use the Settings reset route below and follow Samsung’s ownership-transfer guidance. A Samsung account password may be requested during the reset, and a network connection is required to log out of a Samsung account in that flow.
- Keep the Google account previously associated with the tablet available. A reset from Recovery may trigger Google device protection during setup.
Reset from Settings when the tablet is accessible
- Open Settings.
- Tap General management, then Reset.
- Tap Factory data reset and review the information shown.
- Tap Reset, then confirm with Delete all.
The tablet may ask for its screen-lock credentials and, if a Samsung account is signed in, that account’s password. It will restart to the initial setup screen when the reset is complete. Menu names and layouts can vary by model and software version; if they differ, search Settings for “Factory data reset.”
Use Recovery when Settings cannot be opened
Recovery is the route to investigate if you cannot navigate the tablet normally. First identify the exact Galaxy Tab model: if the tablet is usable, look under Settings > About tablet; otherwise, check its packaging or the model label on the device. Then consult the instructions for that model in Samsung’s Galaxy tablet reset guide or its model-specific support material. Button layouts and software generations differ, so there is no single button-hold sequence established for every Galaxy Tab.

Once the tablet is in Recovery, Samsung’s general button-based instructions use the volume keys to highlight Wipe data/factory reset (wording can vary), then the power key to select it. Follow the prompts displayed on the tablet. This erases the device; it is not a repair for hardware faults.
What to expect after a Recovery reset
Google device protection, also called Factory Reset Protection (FRP), is intended to deter unauthorized resets. After a Recovery reset, setup may ask for the Google account previously associated with the tablet. Depending on the Android version, the former screen-lock method may also be accepted. Samsung explains this protection in its Google device protection guidance.

If you have just reset the Google account password, Samsung Canada’s guidance says you may need to wait 24 hours before using the new password to unlock the device. If you are the legitimate owner and still cannot complete verification, contact an authorized Samsung service center and bring proof of purchase. A factory reset does not remove the ownership check, and bypass tools are not a legitimate recovery route.
Choose the reset route that fits
- Settings works and you can authenticate: use the Settings route. It is Samsung’s normal reset path and lets you review the prompts before confirming.
- Settings cannot be reached: use the model-specific Recovery instructions. Be prepared to verify the previously associated Google account during setup.
- You cannot verify ownership after reset: stop trying reset variations and contact an authorized Samsung service center with proof of purchase.
Samsung also mentions SmartThings Find as a possible reset route, but availability depends on device and account eligibility. Check Samsung’s current service guidance for your situation rather than assuming the option is available.
