To reset a Gateway laptop running Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. Choose Keep my files to preserve personal files while removing apps and settings, or Remove everything to remove personal files as well. Back up anything important first, and have the BitLocker recovery key available if the laptop is encrypted.
Before you reset: protect your files and recovery access
- Back up important files. Copy documents, photos, and other items you need to a separate location, then check that the copies open. Keep my files is not a substitute for a separate backup.
- Find your BitLocker recovery key. Windows may request it during recovery, particularly when you use Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE).
- Connect the laptop to power. Keep it connected while the reset runs.

Reset from Windows 11 Settings
- Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Recovery options, select Reset PC.
- Choose Keep my files or Remove everything. Read the distinction below before continuing.
- If prompted, choose Cloud download or Local reinstall.
- Review the reset summary, confirm the settings, and follow the on-screen prompts until Windows finishes.
The same Windows 11 Settings route is documented in Acer’s factory reset instructions. On a Gateway laptop, this runs Windows’ reset process; it does not guarantee restoration of every original Gateway factory app or configuration.

Keep my files or Remove everything

Back up important data before either choice. Microsoft notes that its optional Clean data setting is consumer-oriented and does not meet government or industry data-erasure standards; do not treat a Windows reset as a certified secure wipe.

Cloud download or Local reinstall

If Windows will not start
If you can still open Settings, enter Windows RE through Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now. In the recovery menu, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC, then choose the same file-retention and reinstall-source options. Windows may ask for the BitLocker recovery key.
If Settings is unavailable, Windows may enter Windows RE after startup problems. Recovery options can vary by model and configuration, so consult the matching Gateway manual or model support page rather than relying on a boot key that may not apply to your laptop.

When Windows reset is not enough
If built-in recovery is unavailable, Microsoft documents using a recovery drive or Windows installation media. A recovery drive is created on an empty USB drive and erases data already on that drive; it does not copy your laptop’s personal files. It is recovery media, not a backup. See Microsoft’s Recovery Drive instructions.
Generic Windows installation media or reset options may not restore hardware-specific drivers and factory apps. Microsoft explains that manufacturer recovery images can include items that generic installation media may omit in its Windows recovery options overview. If restoring the original Gateway software matters, check the exact model’s support materials and manual: Gateway’s support page and notebook manuals describe model-dependent recovery methods. Some manufacturer instructions use older menu labels, so use Windows’ current Settings path when it is available.

Let the reset finish
The display may go black for an extended period, and the laptop may restart during the process. Do not force a restart just because the screen is dark; Microsoft warns that manually restarting during a reset can cause it to fail.
