The eggs of Qianlong shouhu, an Early Jurassic dinosaur from Guizhou, had a mineralized eggshell—but researchers interpret it as leathery rather than hard-shelled. That distinction matters: the fossils suggest early dinosaur eggs may have had a more complex history than a simple progression from soft shells to hard ones.
What researchers found in the Guizhou fossils
The fossils came from the Lower Jurassic Ziliujing Formation in Pingba District, Anshun City, Guizhou Province, and are approximately 190 million years old, according to the China University of Geosciences. In a study published online in 2023 and in a 2024 issue of National Science Review, Fenglu Han and colleagues described three adult skeletons alongside five clutches containing embryos.
This association makes the find unusually informative: researchers can study reproductive evidence together with fossils assigned to a named dinosaur. The preserved clutches contain between three and 16 eggs, although the authors caution that incomplete preservation could account for some of the smaller counts. Most eggs are elliptical and measure approximately 11.5 × 9.4 centimeters.

Why a mineralized shell could still be leathery
“Leathery” does not mean wholly soft or unmineralized. The Qianlong eggshell included a calcareous layer made of calcite, and its microscopic structure was recognizable. In thin sections, the researchers observed interlocking columnar shell units, pores between some units, and calcite arranged in mammillary cones near the shell’s inner surface. Chemical analyses also supported the presence of calcite.
Across 30 samples, the measured calcareous layer averaged 160 ± 26 micrometers thick, with a reported range of 115–230 micrometers. Weathering may have removed some of the outer shell, so the original layer could have been thicker.

Han and colleagues did not classify the eggs from thickness alone. Their leathery-egg interpretation draws on several features considered together:
- Thickness relative to egg mass: the shell was thin in relation to the eggs, even though it was thicker than the calcareous layer reported for some other early-diverging sauropodomorphs.
- Surface and shape: the eggs had a rugose surface and somewhat irregular shapes.
- Fragments: the shell was preserved in small fragments, a trait the authors included in their comparison.
- Microstructure: the shell was mineralized, but that fact alone does not establish that it was hard-shelled.
For context, the study cites an 80–100-micrometer calcareous layer for Massospondylus, usually less than 60 micrometers for known soft-shelled eggs, and a much broader 400–4,750-micrometer range for most other non-avian dinosaur eggs. These comparisons come from Han and colleagues’ study; weathering could affect the thickness measured in the Qianlong fossils.

- Perfect Easter Eggs Gift: Color packing box.A fun and educational gift for all ages. It fosters a love for science and paleontology in a fun and exciting way.
The unexpected result, then, is not that the eggs had no hard material. They had a calcified, structured shell, but the combination of their relative thinness and other physical traits led the authors to interpret them as leathery rather than as typical hard-shelled dinosaur eggs.
What the find suggests about the earliest dinosaur eggs
The study’s broader evolutionary conclusion is an inference, not the discovery of an egg directly identified as the first dinosaur egg. Using comparative evolutionary analyses, the authors concluded that the earliest dinosaur eggs were probably relatively small and elliptical, with leathery shells and relatively long eggshell units. They also place major changes in egg morphology early in theropod evolution, emphasizing that egg-shell evolution was complex.

- EXCAVATE A T-REX FOSSIL: Chip and brush through the plaster block to uncover hidden dinosaur bones, then assemble them into a detailed Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton.
- COMPLETE DINOSAUR DIG KIT: Includes a fossil excavation block, dinosaur bones, hammer-and-pick tool, chisel, brush, sponge, dinosaur figure, and illustrated instructions.
- HANDS-ON STEM LEARNING: Introduces children to paleontology and archaeology through an engaging science activity that encourages curiosity, patience, and discovery.
- DIG, BUILD & DISPLAY: After the excavation is complete, kids can assemble the bones into a 3D T-Rex skeleton for imaginative play, classroom learning, or shelf display.
- GIFT FOR YOUNG DINOSAUR FANS: A screen-free educational activity for children ages 6 and up—ideal for birthdays, holidays, homeschool projects, and rainy-day play.
That conclusion should retain its qualification: “probably” reflects a model-based reconstruction from fossil comparisons. Qianlong provides evidence about an early dinosaur’s eggs, while the claim about the earliest dinosaur eggs comes from interpreting a wider evolutionary pattern.
Other reproductive clues in the fossils
Han and colleagues also interpret the fossils as evidence of synchronous hatching and a prehatching posture transitional between crocodilians and living birds. These are interpretations of the fossil evidence, rather than behaviors observed directly. Together with embryos preserved in the clutches, they add context to how these dinosaurs may have developed before hatching.

The combination of adults, embryos, eggshell structure, and egg form allows the study to address more than shell hardness. It connects the physical properties of the eggs to questions about dinosaur reproduction and how egg traits changed over evolutionary time.
What the evidence does—and does not—establish
- Established in the study: three adult skeletons, five embryo-containing clutches, mineralized eggshell with identifiable microstructure, and eggs averaging approximately 11.5 × 9.4 centimeters.
- Authors’ interpretation: the eggs were leathery, and the fossils support interpretations of synchronous hatching and a transitional prehatching posture.
- Evolutionary inference: ancestral-state analysis suggests the earliest dinosaur eggs were probably leathery, relatively small, and elliptical.
- Still uncertain: the complete original clutch counts and original shell thickness, because preservation may be incomplete and weathering may have removed shell material.
