Code completion can use your repository’s existing code to suggest project-specific functions, symbols, and patterns—but that is different from collecting statistics about how often suggestions are accepted. Repository retrieval supplies context; usage metrics help you judge whether suggestions are being used. To know whether the feature helps, measure acceptance separately from correctness and task outcomes.

What “repository-aware” code completion means

A basic completion model can use the file around your cursor. Repository-level completion can also retrieve context from other files, such as related functions, class definitions, modules, or configuration. That extra context may help suggestions reflect abstractions and conventions already present in your project.

The system has to choose what to retrieve. Research approaches include finding similar snippets, important symbol definitions, or code connected to user behavior. More context is not automatically better: indexing, retrieval quality, and inference latency all affect usefulness. Research papers describe particular designs, not the implementation of every deployed coding assistant.

Repository context and repository statistics solve different problems. Context can inform a suggestion; usage statistics can show activity such as suggestions accepted. Neither alone proves that generated code is correct or that developers are more productive.

How current tools document repository context

GitHub Copilot

GitHub says Copilot repository-context answers and tasks are optimized when a repository’s semantic code search index is up to date. Its documentation describes automatic indexing for Copilot Chat with repository context. See GitHub’s repository-indexing documentation for the feature’s current scope and conditions.

There is an important hosting and data-handling distinction for local or non-GitHub repositories in VS Code: GitHub says workspace data is uploaded to GitHub so it can be searched, and the feature is limited to GitHub.com. Organizations on Business or Enterprise need the relevant policy enabled; GitHub also documents content-exclusion controls for those plans. Check the documentation and your organization’s settings before enabling indexing, particularly if repository content is sensitive.

Sourcegraph Cody

Sourcegraph describes Cody context sources that include keyword search, Sourcegraph Search, and code-graph analysis. Its autocomplete documentation describes single-line and multi-line suggestions informed by code context, as well as supported editor extensions and enterprise configuration. These are vendor descriptions, not the result of an independent head-to-head test. See Cody’s autocomplete documentation and its explanation of context for current details.

How to tell whether it is helping

Choose the outcome before looking at a dashboard. “Better” might mean more inline suggestions accepted, fewer rejected suggestions, correct completion of a defined task, less time to finish a task, or stronger adherence to project conventions. These are different questions and require different evidence.

  1. Define acceptance precisely. Decide what counts as an accepted suggestion and whether you are measuring inline completions only. A provider’s metric may also count other actions.
  2. Use a repeatable task set. Compare the same repository, editor, language, and configuration. Keep tasks consistent so a change in the results is less likely to come from a different workload.
  3. Record usage and quality separately. Count suggestions shown and accepted under your stated rule, then assess task-level correctness with tests or review. Acceptance is not a correctness check.
  4. Measure latency consistently if responsiveness matters. Use the same start and end points for each comparison, such as from a typing event to suggestion availability.
  5. Review data handling and retrieval fit. Check which files are indexed or uploaded, whether exclusions apply, what repository sources the tool can retrieve, and whether it supports your editor and hosting setup.

GitHub’s usage-metrics documentation defines code-completion acceptance rate as the percentage of suggestions accepted and describes reporting at enterprise or organization scope, with repository-level and individual-user granularities. Its documented acceptance activity can include actions beyond inline completion, such as applying a chat response or copying a code block. Select the metric that matches your question, and identify its definition and scope when reporting a result. See GitHub’s Copilot usage metrics documentation.

What published results do—and do not—show

The REPOFUSE authors reported a 40.90% to 59.75% increase in exact-match accuracy against existing models on the CrossCodeEval benchmark, and a 26.8% enhancement in inference speed for their evaluation. These are results for the paper’s method and evaluation, not expected gains for every repository or deployed assistant. Read the study for its method and scope: REPOFUSE paper.

Sourcegraph’s current Cody autocomplete documentation reports an average completion acceptance-rate improvement of more than 4%. That is a vendor-reported product claim, not an independent comparative study. The page also reports a 350 ms P75 latency reduction, but the comparison context is not fully explained there, so the figure should not be treated as a general latency expectation. Consult the documentation for the claims and their current wording.
