A reported knife-point robbery in the UK, said online to have cost a crypto trader almost $800,000, has not been independently confirmed in the sources available. The wider threat is real: police and researchers have documented wrench attacks—violence or threats used to force cryptocurrency access—but available counts are incomplete and must not be treated as a full tally.
What is known about the reported $800,000 loss?
The claim is circulating in posts on r/Revolut and r/RWATimes. Those posts repeat or discuss an allegation of a UK knife-point robbery and an approximately $800,000 cryptocurrency loss. They do not establish the victim’s identity, the amount lost, or that the incident happened as described; no primary police statement or credible original report in the available sources independently verifies those details.
Some online discussion speculates about a connection to Revolut, but no evidence cited here establishes that connection or that any company’s data caused an attack. The allegation should therefore be described as unverified, not as a confirmed robbery or a proven data breach.
What counts as a wrench attack—and why figures are hard to pin down
“Wrench attack” is a term used by police and researchers for physical violence or threats intended to coerce someone into giving access to cryptocurrency. The coercion may involve forcing a victim to unlock a device or account, disclose credentials, or complete an identity check. It is different from a remote cyberattack: the attacker targets a person to get control of digital assets.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Recorded totals are difficult to interpret because police systems may not classify these incidents under a dedicated “wrench attack” category. In a June 2026 freedom-of-information response, West Mercia Police said, “There is no specific marker or tag on our crime management system for crimes involving the behaviour described by the requestor.” It searched narrative summaries using keywords, a method that can miss cases described in different terms. The academic study Investigating Wrench Attacks: Physical Attacks Targeting Cryptocurrency Users also flags under-reporting; one interviewee described an earlier report to authorities by saying, “From the start, it was ignored.” That is the interviewee’s account, not a finding about every police response.
What do the available UK and global counts show?
A July 2026 framework by TRM Labs and the Metropolitan Police Service (Met) reports that the Met identified 17 reported wrench-attack offences in London between March and December 2024. The framework explicitly calls this “not an official statistic” and says the figure likely understates the true volume.

The same framework gives TRM Labs’ open-source estimates of 18 attacks globally in 2023, 24 in 2024, and approximately 70 in 2025. These are estimates based on identified open-source cases, not comprehensive official global totals. They suggest a sharp rise in visible reports, but they cannot show how many attacks actually occurred worldwide or how much of the change reflects improved reporting and detection.

West Mercia Police identified two crypto-related offences involving violence or threats across financial years 2021/22 through 2025/26: one had resulted in a charge and one was ongoing. That is a result for one police force from keyword searches, not a national UK count. The force’s method and the Met framework’s caveat illustrate why local figures should not be added together or read as a complete measure of the threat.

How do documented cases compare?
Two separate cases show what has been reported in investigations, but neither verifies the circulating $800,000 allegation. The details also come from different sources and describe different stages of criminal proceedings.
| Case | Reported incident and amount | Case status or recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Hackney, London, 2024 | TRM Labs says a knifepoint burglary resulted in $4.3 million stolen. | TRM reports that $4.1 million was recovered and three people were convicted in November 2025. Recovery in this investigation does not mean victims can generally expect their funds back. TRM Labs and Met framework |
| Shoreditch and Hertfordshire, incident beginning 3 July 2025 | Hertfordshire Constabulary says a 36-year-old City worker was forced to accompany men to his home. More than £10,000 was taken from bank and crypto accounts; police said the victim was injured and offenders compelled facial verification. | Five men were sentenced on 18 May 2026. Coinbase reported unusual activity, according to police. This is a separate case, not confirmation of the current $800,000 claim. Hertfordshire Constabulary |
What readers should take away
The reports support two conclusions at once: wrench attacks are a documented form of crypto-related violence, and the available numbers do not establish their full scale. A rising open-source estimate is a warning sign, not a complete count; a low local police tally is not proof that attacks are rare. The reported $800,000 loss remains unverified, and it should not be conflated with cases where police have confirmed details or courts have reached convictions.

For any claim about a specific attack, distinguish the amount alleged from an amount confirmed by investigators, and distinguish an arrest or ongoing inquiry from a charge, conviction, or recovery. Physical coercion is not a problem that a wallet feature or other consumer gadget can reliably solve; these cases involve personal safety as well as account security.
