repocarto turns a local repository into a single SVG codebase map with npx repocarto. Its author, Aurelio Nakamura, describes it as a zero-dependency rebuild of the archived githubocto/repo-visualizer, designed around local command-line use, theme-aware rendering, and deterministic output. Those implementation and behavior details are the author’s account, not independent test results.
What repocarto puts in the SVG
The tool walks a local repository, respects its .gitignore, and writes an SVG. Each file appears as a circle: circle size represents lines of code, color represents language, and nested circles show folder structure. The result is a visual overview of files and their relative scale, rather than a text listing or an interactive dashboard.
Nakamura says the implementation is approximately 900 lines of TypeScript and has no runtime dependencies in node_modules. That figure is his approximate code-size claim, not an independently measured count. The workflow is described as offline: it does not require a headless browser, a repository upload, or an API token.
Generate a codebase map from a local repository

Theme behavior and repeatable output
Nakamura says repocarto emits one SVG that uses @media (prefers-color-scheme) to adapt background and text colors for light and dark contexts. He reports verifying that it renders in both GitHub README themes. That is a claim in the author’s account; this article does not independently reproduce the check.

That property is useful in a repository workflow because a generated file need not create a noisy diff simply because it was regenerated. It remains an attributed implementation claim rather than a benchmark or independent test result.

A bug that changed the map
Nakamura recounts that scanning a previously committed output SVG caused the packing to shift on later runs. His account says repocarto now excludes its own output file from the scan. This describes a development fix, not a separately verified test.
Using the map in GitHub automation
The project account also describes a GitHub Action that regenerates the map and commits it only when the generated file changes. The intended effect is to avoid commits when a run leaves the map unchanged. This gives users a documented automation path in addition to running the CLI locally.

How the rebuild differs from the archived predecessor
The predecessor, githubocto/repo-visualizer, was itself a GitHub Action for creating an SVG repository diagram. GitHub’s repository page says it was archived by its owner on August 6, 2026, and is now read-only. Its README documents output-path configuration, excluded paths and globs, root path and folder depth, whether to push a commit, branch and artifact settings, and file colors; its example uses version 0.7.1.

The distinction is therefore a difference in workflow and design emphasis, not a claim that the older project lacked SVG output, configuration, or commit automation. Nakamura describes repocarto as a simpler local CLI with theme-aware rendering and deterministic output, alongside an Action intended to avoid unchanged-map commits.

There is a date discrepancy in the account of the predecessor’s history. Nakamura says it had been archived in 2022, while GitHub currently displays August 6, 2026 as the archive date. The available documentation establishes the latter as GitHub’s displayed notice; the 2022 date is the author’s recollection and should not be treated as the repository’s confirmed archive date.
What to know before adopting it
The source account described repocarto as early and v0.1.x at the time it was published on September 22, 2026. That is a dated maturity statement, not a verified current version. The author invites reports about unsupported languages or themes, so language and theme coverage should not be assumed universal.
