Replit CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad says the next workplace will be a “self-driving company”: software agents handle much of the research, coordination and execution, while people choose the destination, make difficult trade-offs and remain accountable for results. He presented the idea on October 16, 2026, at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco.
The concept does not mean a company without employees. Replit’s definition, published July 16, 2026, keeps humans in charge of goals, judgment, taste and responsibility. It describes a managed loop in which agents gather context, do work, check results and escalate decisions that require a person.
What a “self-driving company” is
Masad’s phrase describes an operating model rather than a single product. Employees set priorities and decide which problems matter. Agents then perform much of the operational work needed to move those priorities forward: finding information, drafting or changing code, coordinating tasks, analyzing data and preparing decisions for review.

Replit’s July 16 account states that people still “choose the destination,” exercise taste, make trade-offs and take responsibility for the outcome. In that sense, autonomy is delegated execution, not delegated accountability. An agent can propose a fix or complete a workflow, but a human remains responsible for whether the work should ship and whether it meets the company’s standards.

How the system works inside Replit
1. An agent assembles context
For an incoming support ticket, TechCrunch reported that an agent checks relevant GitHub issues, the codebase and Linear tickets before a person acts. The result is an enriched case rather than a blank inbox item: the employee receives the history and technical clues needed to decide what to do.
2. A person makes the consequential decision
The human reviews that context, determines the appropriate response and decides whether the proposed approach is safe and useful. This is the “human judgment in the middle” that Masad says is not going away. Taste matters when several technically valid solutions have different effects on customers, maintainability or product direction.
3. Another agent can execute the approved work
After submitting a patch, the employee can click to deploy another agent. That agent performs the implementation, while the surrounding workflow supplies checks and a path back to a person if the result is uncertain. The arrangement separates speed of execution from authority to approve the outcome.

4. Results are checked and escalated
Replit describes a broader system in which agents take a goal from a person, gather the necessary company context, perform the task, verify the result and escalate when human judgment is required. The exact checks vary by workflow; the important design requirement is that an agent’s completion is not treated as proof that the work is correct.
What Replit says its agents do
According to Replit’s July 2026 account, agents are used for production-incident investigation, pull-request review, question answering, business-data analysis, support triage, sales-account research and improvements to Replit Agent itself. These are internal uses of connected systems, not a claim that every company can safely automate the same tasks without configuration.
Replit says it connected agents to GitHub, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, Linear, Notion, Slack and Zendesk. Access policies, token proxies, audit logging and a ZeroTrust network are described as safeguards around those connections. The company also says it is still building policy, permission, security and cost controls for broad customer deployment.

Replit’s reported performance results
The following figures come from Replit’s own 2026 account. They are internal company metrics, not independent audits, and the statements do not establish that the same results will occur in another organization.

More code is not automatically better code, so the quality and incident figures matter as much as the output count. Replit’s numbers show what the company says happened under its own process; they do not prove that agent use caused every change or that the measurements translate directly to headcount savings.
What people would do in this model
Masad told TechCrunch that Replit employees now spend more time deciding what to build, discussing architecture and whiteboarding. Replit’s account says employees do not feel automated; they feel “promoted,” because routine execution is shifted to agents while their influence over direction increases.

That shift changes job design rather than eliminating the need for human decisions. People still define requirements, resolve conflicts between goals, judge quality, communicate trade-offs and accept responsibility when an automated action causes harm. Roles may place less emphasis on manually producing every intermediate artifact and more on framing problems, reviewing evidence and steering multiple agents.
Will agents replace office jobs?
Masad’s public statements contain both an optimistic forecast and a warning. In a Platformer interview, he said, “Net net, there’s going to be more jobs, but also there’s going to be more companies.” In the same interview he said companies will get smaller and that layoffs are “100 percent” certain. These are his forecasts, not employment data or a guarantee for any particular occupation.
The two claims can coexist: a smaller company may produce more with agents, while a larger number of newly formed companies creates additional work elsewhere. The transition can still displace existing employees, especially where tasks are repetitive and easy to verify. Whether a role is reduced, redesigned or expanded depends on the value of its judgment, the reliability of the available data and the organization’s willingness to invest in oversight.

Masad also told Platformer that he expects fewer standalone apps and more agents using apps on people’s behalf within three years. That prediction concerns how software may be consumed; it is not a timetable for every business or a statement that conventional applications disappear.

A self-driving workflow is only as dependable as the permissions and feedback loops around it. Connecting an agent to source code, cloud accounts, customer records or messaging systems gives it power to create side effects. Policies must define which systems it can reach, which actions require approval and how credentials are issued and revoked.
- Reliable context: The agent needs current, well-structured company data. Stale tickets, undocumented decisions or conflicting records can produce a confident but wrong answer.
- Verification: Tests, review rules and monitoring must detect regressions rather than assuming that a completed task is a successful task.
- Escalation: Ambiguous, high-impact or irreversible actions need a clear route to a human decision-maker.
- Auditability: Logs should show what the agent saw, which tools it used, what it changed and who approved the result.
- Cost controls: Broad deployment requires limits on model calls, cloud resources and downstream actions so an automated loop cannot create an uncontrolled bill.
Replit says it is still developing these policy, permission, security and cost controls for wider customer deployment. That admission is significant: the model is an evolving operating system for work, not a finished recipe that can be switched on without risk management.

When another company makes a similar promise, five questions separate a real operating model from a marketing label:
- Who sets goals and owns accountability? A system that removes human responsibility is not the model Replit describes.
- Which steps are delegated? Identify whether agents only draft and retrieve information or can also change production systems, contact customers and spend money.
- How are results verified? Look for tests, review gates, incident tracking and measurements that go beyond output volume.
- What happens to jobs? Ask which tasks disappear, which responsibilities expand and how layoffs or reassignment are handled.
- Is it internal automation or a customer product? Replit’s internal use of connected agents demonstrates one controlled environment; selling an agent to customers introduces different data, permission and support requirements.
What the vision means for workers and managers
Workers evaluating an agent-heavy workplace should learn to specify goals, inspect an agent’s evidence, challenge its assumptions and make decisions that cannot be reduced to a checklist. Managers should map workflows by risk: automate reversible, well-tested steps first; keep approval gates for customer-impacting, financial or production changes; and measure quality, incidents and cycle time together.
Replit’s example suggests that the near-term change is not “AI does everything.” It is a loop in which agents perform more of the middle of the process and people concentrate at the points where direction, taste and accountability matter most. The promised productivity gains remain company-reported, while the employment effects remain a forecast that will vary by organization and sector.
