You can replace Android’s cloud-dependent voice-typing setup with an offline option, but the result depends on which speech-recognition app and keyboard handle your dictation. FUTO Voice Input is a documented Android option that its publisher says processes speech on-device. It does not work as a third-party voice provider inside Gboard, so using it may require a compatible keyboard or a different workflow.
What “offline voice typing” means on Android
Voice typing involves at least two pieces: the app that recognizes speech and the keyboard or app where the recognized text is inserted. Installing an offline recognizer does not automatically make every keyboard use it. The keyboard must support a compatible integration, and the recognition service must actually process the audio offline.
Android’s RecognizerIntent API includes an EXTRA_PREFER_OFFLINE option for requesting offline recognition. The Android Developers documentation cautions that a recognition implementation may ignore the request, so the flag is not a privacy guarantee. Check which recognizer is in use rather than assuming that an “offline” preference controls every app.

FUTO Voice Input: the documented offline option
FUTO describes Voice Input as an Android speech-to-text app that runs entirely on-device and stores no data. Those are the publisher’s claims; they are not an independent verification of network behavior, retention, transcription quality, or performance on a particular device.

FUTO lists downloads through Google Play, F-Droid, and a standalone APK on its Voice Input page. The page also offers an optional one-time license. Choose a download channel you trust, and review the app’s current listing and permissions before installing.
Why Gboard may not use it
FUTO’s project documentation says Voice Input supports Android’s speech-recognition intent and an input-method editor voice subtype. However, the same documentation says Gboard is hardcoded to use Google’s voice input rather than third-party providers. Installing FUTO Voice Input alone therefore does not replace Gboard’s own dictation control.

The project README lists HeliBoard, newer FlorisBoard releases, AnySoftKeyboard, Unexpected Keyboard v1.23 and later, and AOSP-derived keyboards among supported choices. It describes Samsung Keyboard as restricted to Samsung or Google voice input. This is project-maintained compatibility information, not a guarantee for every release or device; check the current app versions and setup instructions in the Voice Input README.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a setup that fits your keyboard
Keep your current keyboard if it supports a third-party recognizer
If your keyboard supports Android recognition intents or the relevant voice subtype, install FUTO Voice Input and follow that keyboard’s current instructions for choosing a voice provider. Compatibility can change between versions, so verify the pairing rather than relying only on a keyboard’s name.

Use a different keyboard if Gboard is the blocker
If you want to keep an offline recognizer available through the keyboard’s voice key, switch to a keyboard documented as compatible with FUTO Voice Input. You will need to evaluate its layout, language support, and other features separately; the compatibility list does not establish that it matches Gboard in every respect.
Replace the keyboard with FUTO Keyboard
FUTO Keyboard is a separate app with voice input integrated. Its product page advertises offline voice input and says the keyboard does not use an internet connection or transmit or store data. FUTO also says the keyboard remains under active development, and some features or languages may be missing. Consider it if built-in offline voice input matters more than having a fully mature feature set.

What Google documents about Gboard and privacy
Google describes several distinct learning mechanisms in its Gboard Help documentation. Federated learning is described as on by default: model updates do not send the text you speak or type, while learned information is sent and combined with other users’ learnings. Google also describes on-device personalization recordings and transcripts that users can delete.
Audio donation is a separate, voluntary flow. Google says that if you agree, snippets of audio input are sent to and stored by Google to improve speech recognition, and that the snippets are not retained beyond 18 months. These documented flows do not establish that every Gboard dictation is routinely uploaded. Review Google’s current controls if you keep using Gboard and want to manage these features.

How to judge whether the offline setup works for you
Neither the available documentation nor the product pages establish a comparable accuracy result, complete language matrix, or device compatibility matrix for these options. Before relying on a new setup, check the details that affect your own use:
Quick Recap
- Offline behavior: After installing and configuring the app, test dictation with the network disabled. An Android offline preference by itself does not prove the recognizer honored it.
- Keyboard integration: Confirm that the keyboard can invoke the recognizer and insert its text in the apps where you dictate.
- Language support: Verify support for your language on your device and current app version; availability should not be inferred from a general offline claim.
- Recognition quality: Try your names, technical terms, punctuation, and typical speaking conditions. No general accuracy comparison is established here.
- Storage and updates: Check model or app storage requirements and whether the project’s development status suits your expectations.
