Most “one-off” fast radio bursts (FRBs) are better described as apparently non-repeating: astronomers have detected one burst from the source so far, but cannot conclude that it will never burst again. A second event may occur outside a telescope’s observing window, below its sensitivity, outside its frequency band, or during a gap in coverage. The available evidence also leaves open whether repeaters and apparently non-repeating sources are two physical populations or the same kind of source operating at different activity levels.

That distinction matters because a catalog’s repeater percentage measures what a survey recognized under particular observing conditions, not necessarily the fraction of all FRB sources that can ever repeat.

What “repeating” and “one-off” mean in an FRB catalog

A fast radio burst is a brief, intense flash of radio emission. Catalogs classify the source’s observing record, not its permanent behavior.

Catalog label What has been observed What the label does not prove
Repeating source At least two bursts have been detected and associated with the same source. That the source bursts at a regular rate, or that every future burst will be detectable.
Apparently non-repeating source One burst has been detected from the source during the observations available so far. That the source is intrinsically one-time-only.

“One-off” is useful plain language, but it can imply a certainty the data do not provide. Astronomers therefore often use “apparently non-repeating.” The classification can change: finding a second burst later moves a source into the repeating category.

The uncertainty is not merely semantic. The probability of finding a repeat depends on how bright later bursts are, how often the source emits, how long a telescope watches the relevant part of the sky, which frequencies it records, and whether observations happen to cover the source when it is active.

Why a repeating source can look one-off

A later burst may be too faint

FRB bursts from one source can span a range of detectable strengths. A telescope may register an initial bright event while missing later, weaker events. A non-detection therefore sets a limit imposed by the instrument and observation, not a demonstration that no emission occurred.

The source may be inactive during follow-up

A source can remain quiet for longer than the interval during which a telescope returns to it. If bursts are separated by long or irregular intervals, short follow-up campaigns have a substantial chance of seeing only one event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequency coverage changes what is visible

Radio bursts can have frequency-dependent properties. A survey operating in one band may detect an event whose later emission is weak or absent in that band. The CHIME/FRB surveys discussed here operate from 400 to 800 MHz, so their repeat-detection opportunity is defined by that range.

Sky exposure and cadence are uneven

A telescope does not observe every source continuously. Declination, daily transit patterns, scheduling, maintenance and other gaps change the accumulated exposure for each position. Two sources with identical intrinsic activity can therefore produce different catalog histories.

Classification evolves as observing time accumulates

In the CHIME source-count analysis, some apparently non-repeating detections were reclassified after a second burst was found. The study also found that the rate of apparently non-repeating detections declined as accumulated observing time increased. More exposure gives additional opportunities for a repeat to reveal itself.

“This classification is inevitably incomplete because, within the limited observing period, we do not know whether the apparent non-repeater will repeat or not in the future.”

What the major CHIME catalogs actually count

Catalog headlines often report the number of detected bursts. A burst is an individual radio event; a source can produce many bursts. Confusing those quantities can make a survey appear to have found far more independent FRB sources than it did.

Catalog Observing period Frequency band Reported detections Repeater detail
CHIME/FRB first catalog (2021) July 25, 2018–July 1, 2019 400–800 MHz 536 bursts 62 bursts came from 18 previously reported repeating sources
CHIME/FRB second catalog abstract (2025) July 2018–September 2023 400–800 MHz More than 4,500 bursts Includes repeating and apparently non-repeating sources; the figure is a burst count, not a distinct-source count

The first catalog’s 536 detections are therefore not 536 separate sources. Likewise, the second catalog’s more than 4,500 events should not be rewritten as more than 4,500 sources. Repetition studies must identify which bursts belong to the same source and account for how much each source was observed.

The dates also matter. The first catalog covers less than a year of detections, from July 25, 2018, to July 1, 2019. The second-catalog abstract extends the observing record through September 2023. A longer baseline naturally creates more chances to catch delayed repeats, but it still does not give every source equal exposure or guarantee that a faint burst would be detected.

Why a small confirmed repeater percentage does not settle the population question

A 2023 Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society study modeled how the apparent source counts changed as CHIME accumulated exposure. Its analyzed data set contained 393 bursts from the second half of the first catalog, covering December 31, 2018, through July 1, 2019. The analysis accounted for declination-dependent exposure.

Quantity What it describes How to interpret it
2.6% confirmed repeater fraction The fraction of sources confirmed as repeating in that analyzed CHIME sample, with a large uncertainty reported by the authors. A directly observed, sample-specific lower-bound-like measure: many sources had not yet had enough detectable follow-up to reveal a second burst.
More than 50% true repeater fraction, with 99% confidence under the model The study’s inferred population fraction after modeling missed repeats and exposure effects. A model-dependent estimate, not a direct catalog percentage. Under the analysis, a value as high as 100% remained consistent.

These figures answer different questions. The first asks how many sources had already been confirmed as repeaters in the selected observations. The second asks what fraction could be repeating after accounting for sources whose later bursts had not been detected. Neither should be presented as a universal census of every FRB in the sky.

The inference depends on the study’s assumptions about source activity and the way detection probability changes with observing time. It is strong evidence that missed repetition can be substantial, while still leaving the number of genuinely one-time sources unresolved.

Why the two numbers cannot be averaged

The 2.6% and “above 50%” figures are not competing measurements of the same quantity. The first is tied to confirmed classifications in one analyzed CHIME sample. The second is a population estimate produced after fitting how source counts evolved with exposure. Combining them into an average, or quoting the model result as if it were a catalog tally, would erase the distinction between observation and inference.

The model also does not say that every apparently non-repeating source has already been shown to repeat. It says the observed pattern is compatible with a population in which repeaters are much more common than the confirmed count suggests. A genuinely one-time population may still exist; the analysis does not determine its exact size.

Do repeaters and apparently non-repeaters produce different bursts?

The first CHIME/FRB catalog reported statistical differences between bursts from known repeaters and bursts from sources that had not repeated at that point. The reported differences involved intrinsic temporal width and spectral bandwidth.

Temporal width

Temporal width describes how long the radio pulse lasts after accounting for the relevant measurement effects. Comparing width distributions can reveal population-level differences, but it does not assign every individual source to a separate physical class. Detection thresholds and time resolution influence which widths are measured reliably.

Spectral bandwidth

Spectral bandwidth describes the span of frequencies occupied by a burst. The catalog found different bandwidth distributions for the two observational samples. Frequency coverage and selection effects matter: a burst whose emission extends beyond the instrument’s band may have only part of its spectrum measured.

Why distribution differences are not a two-class proof

A difference between sample distributions can arise from different activity levels, burst energies, observing conditions or selection thresholds. It does not establish that every repeating source shares one progenitor and every apparently non-repeating source another. The CHIME collaboration explicitly discussed observational selection alongside the measured differences.

A repeating source whose rare bursts resemble the “one-off” population

A 2024 Nature Astronomy study provides a useful test of the idea that apparently non-repeating FRBs might be the extreme end of repeating behavior. Researchers monitored the hyperactive repeating source FRB 20201124A for 2,281 hours over approximately one year. They used four radio telescopes with 25–32 m dishes and detected 46 unique high-energy bursts.

The distribution of those high-energy bursts resembled the distribution inferred for apparently non-repeating FRBs. In practical terms, a source already known to repeat produced rare, energetic events that looked statistically similar to the events used to define the apparently non-repeating sample.

This is evidence for overlap, not a final answer. It comes from intensive monitoring of one source and does not determine the progenitor of every FRB. It does show why a burst’s observed energy and the amount of follow-up must be considered before treating “one-off” as a physical category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The observation also illustrates a selection effect in everyday terms. A very active source can produce many ordinary bursts that are easy to recognize as a repeating pattern, while its rarest and most energetic bursts may be the only events visible in a less sensitive or shorter survey. Looking only at those rare events can make the source resemble the apparently non-repeating sample.

How astronomers establish that an FRB repeats

  1. Detect a transient burst. A survey records a short radio event and measures its arrival time, apparent brightness, duration and frequency structure.
  2. Localize the event sufficiently. The position must be constrained well enough to decide whether a later burst could come from the same source. Improved localization can turn unrelated events into clearly separate sources, or associate events that initially appeared distinct.
  3. Accumulate follow-up exposure. Telescopes return to the position or capture it again through their normal survey coverage. The useful exposure depends on frequency, sensitivity, sky position and scheduling.
  4. Identify a second compatible burst. A later event with a consistent source location is the operational evidence for repetition.
  5. Update the catalog classification. The source is reclassified as repeating, and its additional bursts contribute to analyses of activity, energies, widths and bandwidths.

A non-detection at any step does not close the case. It records only that no burst above the instrument’s effective detection threshold was found during the available exposure.

Why localization is part of the evidence

Repetition is not established merely because two bursts arrived from roughly the same part of the sky. The positions must be compatible within the measurement uncertainties, and the association must be more plausible than a chance alignment. Better localization reduces that ambiguity and allows follow-up telescopes to target the correct position. This is why a catalog can revise source associations as positional information improves.

What comparisons are scientifically fair

When comparing repeating and apparently non-repeating samples, astronomers need to keep four axes separate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Observed repetition: how many bursts were detected from a source and how long it was followed.
  • Detection conditions: sensitivity, frequency band, sky exposure and observing cadence.
  • Burst properties: duration, bandwidth and energy distributions, together with the measurement and selection limits that shape them.
  • Physical interpretation: whether the observed differences require distinct progenitors or can result from related sources with different activity levels.

A comparison that ignores the second axis can mistake unequal observing opportunities for intrinsic behavior. A comparison that ignores the third can treat a measured distribution difference as if it were a hard boundary between sources.

A checklist for evaluating a headline

Ask whether the number refers to bursts or sources, what frequency range and dates were used, and how much follow-up each source received. Then check whether the result is a direct count, a statistical comparison or a model inference. Finally, ask whether the authors are describing one source, one survey, or an entire FRB population. Those distinctions often explain why apparently conflicting claims can both be accurate within their stated limits.

Common mistakes when reading FRB headlines

  • Turning bursts into sources. A catalog’s event total can include many bursts from the same repeater.
  • Calling a source permanently one-time-only. “Apparently non-repeating” is the defensible label after one detected event; it describes the record to date.
  • Using a confirmed fraction as the cosmic fraction. A source is easier to confirm as repeating when it is bright, active and observed often. A low confirmed percentage can coexist with a much larger modeled fraction.
  • Reading a model estimate as a direct count. The inference that the true fraction likely exceeds 50% is conditional on the CHIME source-count model and its assumptions.
  • Assuming width or bandwidth differences prove two progenitor classes. They are sample-level statistical results, not a rule that identifies every individual source.
  • Generalizing one intensively monitored repeater to all FRBs. FRB 20201124A’s high-energy burst distribution is important evidence, but one source cannot resolve the population-wide relationship.
  • Assuming more calendar time means equal exposure. A five-year survey does not watch every declination continuously. Daily visibility, maintenance and scheduling still determine the actual exposure for each position.
  • Treating a non-detection as a null lifetime result. It usually means that no burst above the relevant threshold was seen in a particular band during a particular observing interval.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What remains unresolved

Astronomers still do not know how many FRB sources are truly incapable of producing another detectable burst, how many repeat only after very long intervals, and how much of the apparent difference between samples comes from selection effects. The available studies also do not establish a definitive progenitor explanation for every repeating or apparently non-repeating source.

The most defensible current picture has three parts: some sources clearly repeat; many sources have been observed only once so far; and the boundary between those groups may be partly an observing-history boundary rather than a permanent physical divide. Population models indicate that missed repeaters could be numerous, while measured differences in burst width and bandwidth show that the samples are not identical under the conditions in which they were detected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What future observations need to improve

Progress depends on more than simply adding events to a catalog. Longer monitoring increases the chance of catching delayed activity. Greater sensitivity reveals weaker bursts from already known sources. Broader or complementary frequency coverage tests whether a source is quiet only in one band. More uniform sky exposure makes source-to-source comparisons fairer. Better localization strengthens the association between a new burst and a known source.

Those improvements will help separate three possibilities that currently overlap: a source that repeats frequently, a source that repeats rarely or only at high energies, and a source that truly has not produced another detectable burst. Even then, “never” is a difficult astronomical conclusion; it requires specifying a detection threshold, frequency range and observing duration.

The bottom line for “Are one-off FRBs really one-off?”

Not necessarily. A single detected burst establishes one observation, not a lifetime history. Until a source is monitored long enough, sensitively enough and across suitable observing conditions to make a repeat likely to be found, “apparently non-repeating” is the scientifically accurate description. Current catalog statistics and targeted monitoring support both hidden repetition and real differences between observed samples, so the question of whether all FRBs share one physical population remains open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are one-off fast radio bursts really one-off?

Not necessarily. “Apparently non-repeating” means only that one burst has been detected so far. A later burst may be faint, delayed, outside the observing band or emitted during a coverage gap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many repeating bursts did the first CHIME catalog contain?

The 2021 first CHIME/FRB catalog reported 536 bursts detected from July 25, 2018, to July 1, 2019. Of those, 62 bursts came from 18 previously reported repeating sources. The 536 figure is a burst count, not a count of distinct sources.

What does the 2.6% CHIME repeater fraction mean?

It is the confirmed repeater fraction in the specific sample analyzed by a 2023 Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society study. It is not a universal fraction of all FRB sources and is affected by limited follow-up and missed faint bursts.

How can the true repeater fraction be above 50% if only 2.6% were confirmed?

The two figures measure different things. The 2.6% is directly confirmed repetition in one sample. The above-50% result is a model-dependent estimate that accounts for repeats not yet detected; under that analysis, even a value as high as 100% remained consistent.

Do repeating and apparently non-repeating FRBs have different properties?

The first CHIME catalog found statistical differences in intrinsic temporal width and spectral bandwidth distributions. Those are sample-level differences influenced by measurement and selection effects, not proof that every source belongs to one of two distinct physical classes.

What did monitoring of FRB 20201124A show?

A 2024 Nature Astronomy study monitored the hyperactive repeater for 2,281 hours over about a year with four 25–32 m radio telescopes and detected 46 unique high-energy bursts. Their distribution resembled that inferred for apparently non-repeating FRBs, showing that overlap is possible.

Why do astronomers distinguish bursts from sources?

A repeating source can produce many individual bursts. Counting events as if each were a separate source exaggerates the number of independent FRB objects and can distort estimates of the repeater population.

Can a non-detection prove that an FRB source has stopped?

No. It shows only that no burst above the instrument’s effective threshold was detected during the available exposure and frequency coverage. A source may be quiet, too faint, or active outside those conditions.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: “Apparently non-repeating” describes an observing record, not a proven lifetime behavior. CHIME catalogs, population modeling and intensive monitoring all show why missed repeats may be common, while measured differences between samples remain real but unresolved in physical meaning.
