Renewable energy usually causes much lower lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions and combustion-related air pollution than fossil-fuel electricity, but it is not impact-free. Its environmental effects depend on the technology, the project’s location and design, and what is counted across its lifecycle—from materials and construction through operation and end of life.

So, how does renewable energy affect the environment? It can reduce climate and air-pollution harms while also changing land, water, habitats, and resource demand. The balance is different for solar, wind, hydropower, bioenergy, and geothermal power.

How do renewable energy’s impacts compare with fossil electricity?

Generating electricity without routinely burning fossil fuels generally avoids much of the greenhouse-gas pollution and air pollution associated with combustion. In a 2016 comparative assessment, the United Nations Environment Programme and International Resource Panel reported that hydro, wind, solar, and geothermal electricity had more than 90% lower greenhouse-gas emissions than coal, and 60–90% lower emissions of pollutants harmful to human health and ecosystems.

Those figures describe the assessment’s comparisons, not a guaranteed result for every project. Estimates change with the technology, location, equipment, and lifecycle boundaries used. Manufacturing, construction, transport, operation, and end-of-life management can all contribute impacts even when a power plant does not burn fuel while generating electricity.

Lifecycle comparisons are more informative than looking only at a plant’s operation. The National Laboratory of the Rockies’ life-cycle emissions dataset, submitted in 2021 and updated in 2026, organizes estimates in grams of carbon-dioxide equivalent per kilowatt-hour across upstream, ongoing combustion, ongoing non-combustion, downstream, and total lifecycle stages. A technology-specific number should be read with its underlying assumptions and stage boundaries; a single emissions figure cannot describe every project or environmental effect.

Which environmental effects should be considered?

  • Climate emissions: Compare greenhouse gases over the full lifecycle, not just emissions at the generator. Project configuration and study boundaries can change estimates.
  • Air pollution: Less fuel combustion can mean fewer combustion-related pollutants than coal generation, while manufacturing and construction still have impacts.
  • Water: Distinguish water withdrawn from water consumed, and account for the cooling system and generation technology. Hydropower also changes river flows, reservoirs, and aquatic ecosystems.
  • Land and biodiversity: Assess the area occupied or transformed, habitat effects, and the condition of the site. A large solar facility or reservoir can alter a broad area; wind installations may be more distributed, but their siting still matters.
  • Materials and end of life: Equipment needs materials and must eventually be managed at retirement. Include manufacturing and disposal or other end-of-life impacts in a fair comparison.

How do the impacts differ by technology?

The table summarizes the main considerations identified for each technology. These are qualitative patterns, not a universal ranking: local siting, design, and lifecycle assumptions can change the balance.

Technology Climate and air Land, water, and ecosystems Materials and lifecycle considerations
Solar photovoltaic and concentrating solar Low operational emissions; lifecycle impacts remain. Large solar facilities can transform broad areas. Effects depend on the deployment site; water considerations vary with technology and configuration. Assess materials, manufacturing, construction, and end-of-life impacts across the lifecycle.
Wind Lifecycle impacts are concentrated in manufacturing, transport, construction, and end of life rather than routine fuel combustion. Installations can be more distributed than large solar facilities, but habitat and land context still matter when choosing sites. Include turbine materials, transport, construction, and end-of-life management.
Hydropower Lifecycle emissions are generally much lower than coal in the UNEP assessment, but reservoir emissions can occur. Greenhouse gases from flooded organic matter vary by reservoir and over time. Dams and reservoirs can disrupt rivers and ecosystems and transform large areas. Reservoirs may also provide water storage and other services. Include dam and reservoir construction, ecosystem changes, and emissions over the reservoir’s lifetime.
Bioenergy Burning biomass emits greenhouse gases. The UN overview describes emissions as generally lower than fossil fuels, but the result depends on the pathway. Large plantations or forest conversion can contribute to deforestation, land-use change, water stress, and biodiversity loss. Assess how the biomass is sourced and the land-use changes associated with its production; do not assume every pathway is low-carbon.
Geothermal Included among the sources with large greenhouse-gas reductions versus coal in the UNEP assessment; project impacts depend on site and technology. Environmental effects are site- and technology-dependent. Consider project construction and the full lifecycle rather than treating renewable status as proof of zero impact.

Why do location and project design matter?

The same technology can have different effects in different places. A solar project’s impact depends partly on whether its site is ecologically sensitive; wind siting should account for habitat and land context. A hydropower reservoir alters a river system, and the amount of greenhouse gas produced from flooded organic matter varies by reservoir and over time. For biomass, the sourcing pathway matters: plantations or forest conversion can create substantial land, water, and biodiversity risks.

Water comparisons also need care. Thermal and non-thermal generation should not be treated as if their water needs were interchangeable, and cooling systems affect the comparison. For hydropower, a water-use figure alone misses changes to rivers, reservoirs, and ecosystems.

How can you make a fair environmental comparison?

  1. Compare the same service. Use electricity generation as the shared basis and make clear the geography, technology configuration, and lifecycle boundary being compared.
  2. Look beyond operating emissions. Include upstream materials and manufacturing, construction, ongoing combustion or non-combustion impacts, and downstream or end-of-life stages where the assessment provides them.
  3. Check multiple impact categories. Consider greenhouse gases, air pollutants, water withdrawal and consumption, land occupation, habitat and biodiversity, resource use, and end-of-life effects.
  4. Read figures as estimates, not guarantees. A reported comparison can illuminate a pattern, but it does not establish a universal winner across all technologies, places, and impact categories.

The central trade-off is not renewable versus impact-free. It is how each electricity option performs across several environmental dimensions over its full lifecycle. The broad climate and air-pollution advantage over coal is important, but responsible siting, sourcing, design, and end-of-life management determine how much of that advantage a particular project retains.
