RemoveMacAI is an unofficial utility for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 27 that its developer says disables Apple Intelligence, removes its downloaded models, and blocks them from downloading again. It is not a simple storage-cleanup button: using it also disables a range of Apple Intelligence features, and the project’s technical and compatibility claims have not been independently audited here.
What RemoveMacAI does
According to the project’s README, RemoveMacAI is available as a native app and a command-line tool. It applies restrictions through a configuration profile that the user approves in System Settings, then uses Apple’s asset service to remove downloaded models. The project says the profile redirects later model-download requests to a closed local port, preventing those downloads from returning.
The project also says the utility leaves System Integrity Protection (SIP) enabled and does not modify /System. These are claims made by the project, not findings from an independent security audit. A configuration profile and system restrictions still carry risk: Apple may change the relevant keys or services in a future macOS release, and effects on system behavior or third-party apps are not fully predictable.

Which Macs and macOS versions are supported
The project currently lists Apple silicon and macOS 27 as requirements. Its README says it was tested on macOS 27.0 and specifies version 0.2.3 or later for macOS 27.0.1. macOS 26 and earlier are listed as unsupported. As support can change with releases, check the project’s README and release notes for your exact macOS build before proceeding.

What you lose when Apple Intelligence is disabled
The project’s affected-feature list is broad. It includes Apple’s visible AI tools as well as system features and integrations that may be less obvious:
- Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, and the ChatGPT extension.
- Summaries, Mail smart replies, and inline predictions.
- Spatial Photos and Photos Clean Up.
- Xcode predictive code completion.
- Third-party apps that use Apple’s Foundation Models framework, Shortcuts’ Use Model action, Visual Intelligence, and natural-language Calendar editing.
Apple describes the Foundation Models framework and its relationship to the on-device model powering Apple Intelligence in its macOS 27 developer documentation. The RemoveMacAI project says dictation remains available because its speech models are separate from the Apple Intelligence models it removes.

How much storage can it free?
There is no established amount that every Mac will recover. In October 2026, 9to5Mac reported Apple’s statement that the latest Apple Intelligence models can require up to 14 GB on newer Macs; that is a maximum, not a promise that every Mac has that much removable data. Coverage of RemoveMacAI described recovery of around 12 GB or more, but that figure is not a universal, independently measured result. Ars Technica also relayed a report from The Verge that model use may exceed 30 GB in some cases; that should be treated as a possible reported amount, not typical usage.

Even after removal, macOS Storage settings may continue to count the models until the operating system deletes the released files on its own schedule, according to the project. That means the displayed storage total may not change immediately, and the amount ultimately reclaimed depends on the files present on the individual Mac.

Should you use it?
RemoveMacAI may suit an Apple silicon Mac user on a supported macOS 27 build who wants Apple Intelligence disabled system-wide and accepts losing the listed functions. It is a poor fit if you depend on Writing Tools, Siri features, Foundation Models apps, or other affected integrations, or if you are unwilling to rely on unofficial configuration that Apple could change.
- Consider it if disabling the features matters more to you than keeping them available, you meet the project’s stated requirements, and you are comfortable with an unofficial utility.
- Hold off if your macOS build is not explicitly supported, you need any affected feature, or you require independent validation of the tool’s safety and behavior.
- Set expectations that recovered space varies and may not appear immediately in Storage settings.
Can you reverse the changes?
The project documents removemacai revert for the command-line tool and an undo control in the app. It says the configuration profile persists across macOS updates, although an update may reset some other settings. Reverting the utility’s changes does not establish that every removed model will be redownloaded immediately; check the project’s current instructions for the restoration behavior on your version.
