RemoveMacAI can reclaim space used by downloaded Apple Intelligence models on supported Macs, but it is an unofficial, third-party tool—not an Apple utility or a guaranteed one-click storage fix. Removing the models disables Apple Intelligence features that rely on them. Check the project’s live compatibility notes and instructions before using it, and weigh the space you might recover against the features you will lose.
How much space does Apple Intelligence take up on a Mac?
Apple says Apple Intelligence may require up to 14 GB on qualifying newer Macs with M3 or later and at least 12 GB of unified memory, and up to 8 GB on other compatible Mac models. Those figures are maximum storage requirements, not a measurement of what is installed on your Mac or a promise of how much removal will free. See Apple’s current compatibility and storage guidance.
Contemporary reporting on RemoveMacAI describes roughly 12 GB as potentially recoverable, depending on the models present. That is a reported estimate, not an Apple figure or a controlled result that applies to every Mac. Storage readings can also disagree: in a separate manual-deletion experiment on one Mac, AppleInsider reported that the Storage category fell from 27.59 GB to 3.07 GB while available disk space increased by about 14 GB. That single-device result was not a RemoveMacAI test. MacRumors’ report on RemoveMacAI and AppleInsider’s manual-removal report provide those separate contexts.

After removal, macOS may take time to delete model files, and the Storage settings pane may continue to count them temporarily. Do not treat a stale category total as proof that no space was reclaimed; check available storage as well and allow the system time to update.

What does RemoveMacAI do?
RemoveMacAI is an open-source project distributed on GitHub. According to its project README, it turns off Apple Intelligence settings, removes downloaded models through Apple’s asset service, and uses a configuration profile to prevent macOS from downloading the models again. The project says System Integrity Protection remains enabled and that it does not modify files under /System.
The README also says the profile persists across macOS updates, while other settings may need to be reapplied if an update resets them. That describes the project’s current implementation, not a guarantee that future macOS versions will behave the same way. Apple can change its system services or restrictions.

Which Macs and macOS versions are supported?
The project README currently lists Apple silicon and macOS 27 as requirements. For macOS 27.0.1, it specifies RemoveMacAI version 0.2.3 or later; macOS 26 and earlier are listed as unsupported. These compatibility details can change, so confirm the current requirements and instructions on the live project page before acting.

RemoveMacAI or manual deletion: which approach is better documented?
RemoveMacAI and manual Recovery-mode deletion are different approaches. AppleInsider describes the manual method, but it is not an Apple-documented procedure; its reported storage change came from one Mac and should not be treated as a typical outcome.

How do I reclaim Mac storage with RemoveMacAI?
Use the project’s current instructions rather than relying on an old walkthrough: compatibility and macOS internals can change. The procedure below describes the project’s documented behavior, not a guarantee of a particular storage gain.

- Allow macOS to finish cleanup. The project notes that deletion and Storage settings accounting may take time. Check available disk space after macOS has had time to update.
Can I get Apple Intelligence back after removing it?
The project says the changes can be reversed with removemacai revert or the app’s “Undo Everything” option. Consult the current README for the correct steps for your version, then allow macOS to restore or download the required models. Restoration behavior can depend on the macOS version and Apple’s services; the project does not make future compatibility a guarantee.

RemoveMacAI is free software on GitHub, and the documented software path does not require buying hardware. Its suitability comes down to whether the possible internal-storage recovery is worth giving up the model-dependent features and using an evolving third-party method.
