Whether you can remove subtitles cleanly depends on where they are stored. If they are a separate subtitle track, you can turn it off or make a copy of the video without that track. If the text is burned into the picture, no stream-removal command can extract the pixels behind it; you can only hide or attempt to reconstruct the affected area.

First, find out whether the subtitles are a separate track

Turn subtitles off in your video player. If the text disappears, it is likely a selectable subtitle track. If it remains visible, it is probably part of the video image or another rendered overlay.

You can also inspect the file’s streams with a media tool. A separate track can be removed without changing the video image; burned-in text cannot. Keep an untouched copy of the original before editing.

Remove a separate subtitle track

Use FFmpeg

FFmpeg can copy selected streams into a new file without re-encoding them, provided the target container supports those streams. To retain the first video and audio streams while omitting subtitles, run:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v -map 0:a -c copy output.mkv

This explicit mapping may leave out other streams, such as data or alternate audio tracks. If you want to retain the automatically selected non-subtitle streams instead, use:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy -sn output.mkv

FFmpeg documents -sn as disabling subtitle recording for the output, including automatic selection or mapping of subtitle streams. It does not remove text already rendered into the picture. See FFmpeg’s stream-selection and output-option documentation.

Bitmap subtitles can still be removed as tracks

Some subtitle streams store each caption as an image rather than text; PGS and VobSub are examples. Converting those captions into editable text has different limitations from handling text-based subtitles, but if your goal is simply to remove them, omitting the subtitle stream is a separate operation. See FFmpeg’s documentation for stream handling.

What to do about subtitles burned into the picture

When subtitles are part of the image, there is no independent track to delete. The text covers scene pixels, and those original pixels may not be recoverable. A stream-copy command or subtitle-track editor will not remove it.

  • Find a clean source: This is the only reliable way to retain the original image where the text appears.
  • Crop the frame: This can hide text near an edge, but discards part of the picture and may change the output dimensions or require scaling.
  • Cover or blur the text: This preserves the frame boundaries but leaves a visible altered patch and hides scene detail underneath.
  • Try inpainting: Video-editing tools may estimate the obscured area from nearby pixels or frames, but the result is uncertain. Movement, scene cuts, complex textures, and text over faces or objects can make artifacts more noticeable.

Subtitle Edit’s documentation for generating burned-in subtitles describes adding text to video through FFmpeg; it does not establish that burned-in text can be cleanly reversed. See the Subtitle Edit project documentation.

Choose a method by what you need to change

Method Works for Trade-off Changes video image or requires re-encoding?
Disable subtitles in the player A separate subtitle track Changes playback only; the track stays in the file. No
Remux with FFmpeg or remove a track with Subtitle Edit A separate subtitle track Check that desired audio, video, data, and language tracks are retained and supported by the output container. Usually no video re-encode when streams are copied.
Crop Burned-in text near an edge Loses part of the picture. Yes, typically.
Cover or blur Burned-in text Leaves a visible patch and hides detail. Yes.
Inpaint Burned-in text Reconstructed pixels may be inaccurate or visibly flawed. Yes.
Obtain a clean source Burned-in text Depends on access to another source. No edit to the original is needed.

If you want to replace or translate the subtitles

Look for a clean source first. If one is available, create or add a separate subtitle track rather than modifying the image; that keeps captions selectable. If the only available video has burned-in text, removing it and adding replacement captions means editing the image as well as creating the new captions, and the obscured scene detail may remain imperfect. Subtitle Edit’s documentation on burned-in subtitles covers adding them, not reliably undoing them.
