To remove GPS metadata from a photo, change or omit its location using the app or sharing control for your device, then inspect the exact file you plan to send. These steps have different effects: removing a saved location changes an item in your library, a share setting may omit location only for one transfer, and disabling camera location access affects future captures. A clean metadata check also cannot hide landmarks or other clues visible in the image.
Choose the right location control
First decide whether you want to change a photo already in your library, omit location from one share, or stop the camera from recording location in future photos. They are not interchangeable. Apple documents all three controls, and says recipients of shared photos or videos that include location metadata may be able to access it and learn where the media was taken. Apple Support explains its Photos location controls.
| Goal | Control | What it affects |
|---|---|---|
| Remove a saved location | Set the item to No Location in Photos | The selected library item; inspect the output file to confirm what was actually removed. |
| Share without location | Turn off Location in the Photos Share Sheet | The share made through that Photos sharing flow, not necessarily other ways of sending the file. |
| Prevent future camera location capture | Disable Location Services for Camera | Future camera captures while that setting is disabled. |
Keep the original and identify the outgoing copy
If location helps you organize or archive your photos, preserve an untouched original and make a separate copy for sharing. If you use an app’s remove-location control, establish which item it changed and which file will be sent. App displays and export behavior are not a universal guarantee for every share route, so verify the precise output copy.

iPhone or iPad: omit location from a Photos share
In the Photos Share Sheet, tap Options and turn off Location before sharing. This controls that share flow; do not assume it changes the stored original or applies to a copy sent by another method.
iPhone or iPad: stop future camera location capture
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera and select Never. This affects future camera captures while the permission remains disabled; it does not remove location from existing photos.

Verify the exact file you will share
Use a metadata inspector on the exported, edited, or otherwise outgoing file—not just the library preview. Look across the metadata groups and formats the inspector reports for GPS coordinates, GPS position, and location fields. ExifTool’s FAQ warns that GPS information can be stored in formats other than EXIF, so checking only the EXIF GPS group may miss location data. ExifTool FAQ.

- Inspect that copy with a metadata tool that reports more than only EXIF GPS tags.
- Look for coordinates or other location fields in all reported metadata groups.
- If location remains, use a documented removal control and inspect the resulting copy again.
A location field that is absent from one app’s display is not a complete metadata audit. Nor does removing GPS prove that every other kind of metadata has been removed. The check answers the narrower question of whether the outgoing file still contains location information detectable by the inspector.

Understand Google Photos location and sharing
Google Photos distinguishes location saved by the camera from an estimated location. An estimate may be based on recognizable landmarks or similarities to other geotagged photos; it is not the same thing as embedded GPS coordinates. Google says estimated locations are not shared even when location details are included, and its help guidance describes controls for editing or removing an estimate. That does not establish that changing an estimate clears GPS embedded in an exported original. Inspect the outgoing file when embedded data matters. Google Photos Help: manage location estimates and sharing.
Google says new albums, links, conversations, and other shared items do not include location details by default, except for partner sharing. Treat that as guidance for Google Photos’ described sharing paths, not a guarantee about every export, download, or file transfer.

What metadata removal cannot hide
Removing embedded coordinates cannot conceal information visible in the image. Street signs, distinctive buildings, landscapes, interiors, reflections, or other recognizable details can let someone infer where a photo was taken. Google Photos specifically cautions that recipients may guess a location from landmarks even when location is not included in sharing. Review the image itself as well as its metadata if the place must remain private.
Windows and Android: verify before relying on a menu path
Exact current local-file removal steps for Windows and Android are not established here, so a universal menu path would be misleading. Use a current device or application guide for the specific system and version, and inspect the resulting outgoing file rather than assuming that a location display or sharing option removed embedded coordinates.
