To shorten long pauses in spoken audio without sending the recording to a web trimmer, use Audacity’s built-in Truncate Silence effect. It detects low-level passages and either trims them to a consistent duration or reduces only the excess time. The recording is edited in the desktop application and you can export the result from there.
What Audacity counts as silence
Truncate Silence does not look only for digital zero. The Audacity Development Manual’s Truncate Silence instructions define “silence” for this effect as sounds below the detection threshold for the specified minimum duration. A quiet word, breath, or fading sound can therefore be detected if it falls below your chosen threshold long enough.
The manual documents a threshold range of -20 dB to -80 dB and a minimum duration as short as 0.001 seconds. These are control limits, not recommended presets for spoken audio. With background noise, Audacity says a higher (less negative) threshold may be needed. If the effect detects too few gaps, its guidance is to raise the threshold or lower the minimum duration.

Shorten pauses with Truncate Silence
- Open the recording: In Audacity, open or import the spoken audio file.
- Select what to edit: Select the track or the passage where you want to shorten pauses.
- Open the effect: Choose Effect > Special > Truncate Silence.
- Set detection: Choose a detection threshold and minimum duration. A passage must remain below the threshold for at least that duration to qualify.
- Choose how pauses are shortened: Use Truncate Detected Silence to make detected pauses a common target length, or Compress Excess Silence to preserve a baseline pause length and reduce only the extra time by a percentage.
- Preview and inspect: Listen to the result and check the waveform. Keep natural breaths and pauses, and check quiet words and fades for accidental cuts.
- Export the edit: Export the edited audio from Audacity.
Choose the approach that preserves the speaker’s pacing

Neither mode decides whether a pause is meaningful. An aggressive threshold or duration can shorten a pause that conveys emphasis, remove a breath, or cut the quiet tail of a fade. Audacity’s Basic audio editing guidance advises: “Leave the breaths in: cutting every pause makes speech sound unnatural and rushed.” Listen through the edited passage rather than relying on the waveform alone.

What this does—and does not do—for a local workflow
The documented workflow opens a file in Audacity, applies the effect, and exports the edited audio; it does not require uploading the recording to a web trimmer. That describes where this edit is performed, not an independent privacy audit or a guarantee about every version’s network activity. Truncate Silence shortens duration; it does not remove background noise from the portions of audio it keeps.
