To remove a conditional-formatting rule in Google Sheets, open Format > Conditional formatting, find the rule in the sidebar and click Remove. This deletes the rule rather than clearing other formatting such as fonts, borders or number formats.

Remove a rule on a computer

  1. Open the spreadsheet and select a cell affected by the unwanted formatting. If you know the exact range, you can select it instead.

  2. Choose Format > Conditional formatting. The rules appear in a panel on the right. Google’s computer instructions describe this workflow.

  4. Click Remove for that rule, then check the affected cells.

Review conditional-formatting rules across a whole sheet

To review rules across the sheet rather than only those associated with a particular cell, select the entire sheet before opening Format > Conditional formatting. Inspect the listed rules and remove only those you no longer need. Google recommends reviewing unnecessary, duplicated or overlapping rules as a possible performance cleanup, but does not quantify a speed improvement. Google’s performance guidance explains the recommendation.

These steps are documented in Google’s Android instructions. They should not be assumed to describe the iPhone or iPad interface.

Remove the rule without clearing other formatting

Use Remove in the conditional-formatting panel when you want to stop a rule from controlling cell appearance. Avoid Format > Clear formatting if you need to preserve other styling: a Google Docs Editors Community answer notes that Clear formatting also removes other kinds of cell formatting. Community guidance on Clear formatting discusses this distinction.

If the formatting comes back or the rule is hard to find

Check the rule’s applied range

Select a cell that visibly has the formatting, then open the conditional-formatting panel and inspect the rule’s range. A rule may not appear relevant if you selected a cell outside the range it affects. This is practical navigation guidance also raised in a Google Sheets community discussion.

Check whether a paste carried the rule

Copying and pasting cells or ranges with conditional-formatting rules can apply those rules to the pasted content. If the appearance returns after a paste, inspect the pasted cells’ rules and applied ranges. Google documents this copy-and-paste behavior.

Keep filter troubleshooting separate

If you are troubleshooting why Create a filter is unavailable, Google lists conditional-formatting rules among the items to check. That is a separate issue; remove a rule only if it is actually necessary for your task. See Google’s filter troubleshooting guidance.
