To remove Activation Lock, use the Apple Account linked to Find My, ask the previous owner to unlink the device, or submit an Apple support request if you have proof of purchase and cannot recover the account. Erasing or restoring the device does not bypass the lock.
Why Activation Lock remains after an erase
Activation Lock is Apple’s anti-theft protection. It turns on when Find My is set up and links the device to the owner’s Apple Account. During activation, Apple requires the linked account credentials—or the device passcode where that option is offered—to verify authorization. Apple states that “Your Apple Account password is required before anyone can turn off Find My, erase your device or reactivate and use your device.” See Apple’s explanation of Activation Lock for iPhone and iPad.
A factory reset, restore, or erase removes content but does not establish ownership or remove the account link. The lock is intended to persist until the owner turns off Find My or removes the device from their account.

Choose the route that matches your situation

If you own the device and can sign in
Enter the Apple Account and password used when Find My was enabled during the activation flow. If the device offers the passcode option, use the device passcode. To remove the lock before selling, giving away, or otherwise transferring a device, turn off Find My while signed into the account. Apple says disabling Find My automatically removes Activation Lock.

iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Find My, then tap Find My iPhone or Find My iPad.
- Turn off Find My and enter the Apple Account password if prompted. Apple’s device-specific instructions are in Turn off Find My on your devices and items.
Mac
On the Mac, open System Settings, select your Apple Account, then use the iCloud or Find My Mac controls to turn off Find My Mac. Apple may ask for the account password. The exact controls and Activation Lock requirements depend on the Mac; follow Apple’s Mac-specific Activation Lock guidance.
Apple Watch
Unpair the Apple Watch from the iPhone it is paired with. Apple’s Find My instructions describe unpairing as the route for turning off Find My on Apple Watch; see Apple’s device instructions.

If you forgot the Apple Account password
- Try to identify the Apple Account using the email address or phone number you used for Apple services.
- Use Apple’s account-recovery process to regain access, then complete the on-device activation or turn off Find My.
- If you cannot recover the account and have proof-of-purchase documentation, start an Activation Lock support request.
Submitting a request is not a guarantee that Apple will remove the lock. Apple’s guidance identifies this as a support route for people who need help and have proof of purchase; it does not promise approval.

If you are the new owner
Do not complete setup or accept a used iPhone or iPad that still asks for the former owner’s Apple Account. Ask the seller or previous owner to enter their credentials on the device, or to remove it remotely from their account. Apple’s buyer guidance is in If you want to buy a pre-owned iPhone.

- Have the prior owner remove the device from their Apple Account using Find My or iCloud.
- Restart the setup process and confirm that you can proceed without a prompt for the former owner’s account.
- If the seller cannot or will not unlink it, do not complete the purchase.
There is no legitimate recipient-side bypass in Apple’s instructions: the prior owner’s authorization or Apple’s review of a support request is required.
If you already sold or gave away the device
Use Find My to erase the device and then remove it from the account. Erasing deletes its contents; after it is removed from Find My, Activation Lock is turned off so another person can activate it. - Open Find My or sign in to iCloud.com/find, then select the device.
- Choose the option to erase it. If it is offline, the remote erase begins the next time it connects; Apple says it emails the owner after erasure.
- After erasure, choose Remove This Device or the corresponding remove option to unlink it.
If the device is managed by a school or business
Contact the organization’s IT department or manager. Organizational ownership and management controls are not something a recipient can independently remove through ordinary consumer account steps.
Avoid bypass tools and services
Apple’s documented routes rely on the linked account, the previous owner, or an Apple support request with proof of purchase. A third-party unlock service, exploit tool, hardware accessory, factory reset, or restore does not substitute for owner authorization. Avoid sharing account credentials or payment with anyone promising guaranteed removal.
