To remove a white background from a PNG logo, first check whether the white is actually part of the image. If it is, select or mask the background, clear it without removing white artwork, and export with transparency as a PNG. Then check the result against both light and dark colors.
Check whether the white is really part of the logo file
A white preview does not necessarily mean the image has a white background: some viewers display transparent pixels as white. Open the PNG in an editor and place it over a contrasting canvas. A checkerboard commonly indicates transparency in editing software; an opaque white field indicates pixels that may need to be removed.
Keep an original copy before editing. This lets you return to the source if a selection removes part of the design or leaves a poor edge.
Choose a method that protects the logo
Flat white background, no white artwork
For a solid white field around a logo made of other colors, use a color-selection or wand tool to select the background. Adjust the selection tolerance carefully: too little can leave white fringes, while too much can select pale colors in the logo. Clear the selected background, then inspect the boundary before exporting.

White lettering, highlights, or shapes in the logo
A global command to remove every white pixel can erase intended parts of the artwork. Use a layer mask or a selection constrained to the area around the logo instead. Zoom in at the edges and verify that white details remain intact.
Uneven or complex background
If the background is not a uniform field, a simple color selection may also catch similar colors in the logo or miss shaded areas. Use a mask and refine it around the artwork rather than assuming one tolerance setting will separate everything cleanly.

Remove the background and export in the right format
Photopea
Photopea’s background-removal tutorial describes selecting the background, adjusting selection behavior, clearing the selection, and exporting as PNG. The tutorial is older, so interface labels may have changed. After clearing, confirm that the background is transparent rather than filled with white.
GIMP
GIMP’s transparency documentation explains saving images with transparent regions as PNG. When exporting, retain an alpha-capable format: GIMP’s PNG export documentation notes that PNG8 supports only one-bit transparency, unlike formats that can retain partial transparency. Partial alpha helps preserve antialiased edges.

Canva
Canva’s Help Center documents this export path: remove existing background elements or set the background, then choose Share > Download, select PNG, and enable Transparent background. Canva lists Pro, Teams, Business, Education, and Nonprofits as eligible plans for that feature. Plan names and availability can change, so check Canva’s current instructions before relying on it.
Photoshop
Adobe documents PNG as an available format in its Photoshop export settings guidance. That documentation establishes the export-format option, not a specific procedure for removing a logo’s white background. Regardless of the selection method, make sure the background is cleared or masked before export.

Verify the exported PNG
- Export as PNG. JPG does not support transparent pixels, so it cannot preserve a transparent logo background.
- Reopen or preview the exported file. Check it over both a light and a dark background; a white preview alone can be misleading.
- Inspect the edges and artwork. Look for leftover white pixels, a pale halo, missing white details, or a solid rectangle behind the logo.
- Refine and export again if needed. Adjust the selection or mask, then repeat the contrast check.
Pick a workflow based on the image and your constraints
