For remote work, there is no single internet speed that guarantees a good experience: the right amount depends on your meeting platform, whether you’re in a one-to-one call or a group meeting, and what else is using your connection. As a starting point, check both upload and download speeds against your app’s guidance, then test a typical call while working from your usual location. A connection can still produce choppy audio or dropped calls when latency, jitter, packet loss, or Wi-Fi conditions are poor.

What internet speed is enough for remote work?

Use app-specific call guidance rather than treating one number as a universal work-from-home minimum. The figures below describe per-endpoint or platform guidance—not the total broadband speed every household needs. They are not directly interchangeable with a home internet plan’s advertised speed.

Reference Guidance or figure What it means
Microsoft Teams, one-to-one video 1.5 Mbps upload and 1.5 Mbps download per endpoint Microsoft’s recommended bandwidth for a one-to-one video call. Microsoft’s guidance was last updated in 2026.
Microsoft Teams, meeting video 2.5 Mbps download and 4 Mbps upload per endpoint Microsoft’s recommended bandwidth for meeting video. Actual use varies with layout, resolution, and frame rate. Microsoft’s guidance was last updated in 2026.
Zoom, HD video 1.2 Mbps upload and 1.2 Mbps download Zoom’s general HD video guidance on its current support page; the page does not display a publication date. This is platform guidance, not a universal internet-plan requirement. Zoom’s bandwidth guidance.
FCC, broadband capability benchmark 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload A benchmark discussed in the FCC’s 2023 notice for advanced broadband capability, not an individual remote-work minimum. The notice also observed that multiple simultaneous activities can exceed a 3 Mbps upload benchmark. FCC notice (2023).

One video call is only part of a household’s demand. Other people on calls, cloud backups, streaming, and simultaneous work can consume capacity at the same time. Allow headroom for those activities rather than assuming that a single endpoint’s recommended bandwidth will cover the entire home.

How to test whether your connection is strong enough

  1. Measure both directions. Run an online speed test, or ask your internet provider to test the connection. Record upload and download results, then compare them with the service your plan is supposed to provide. Microsoft recommends comparing measured results with your expected service.
  2. Test from your work location. Repeat the test in the room and at the time you usually notice problems. A result beside the router may not reflect a weaker Wi-Fi signal in a home office.
  3. Check call quality during a real session. For Zoom, open meeting statistics to inspect bandwidth, latency, jitter, and packet loss. Zoom also offers a test meeting; invite another participant if you want to check audio and video connectivity more fully.
  4. Use representative conditions. Test during a normal work session, with typical video settings and household activity. Call quality can vary with platform settings, congestion, and the other participant’s connection; a problem on their end can affect the call too. Microsoft notes that the other participant may have the connection problem.
  5. Follow the pattern in the results. If repeated tests fall short of the service you expect from your plan, contact your provider. If results mainly change with room location or Wi-Fi conditions, troubleshoot the home network first. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.

Why speed alone may not explain a bad call

Upload and download speeds matter because a call receives and sends audio, video, and shared content. Compare both directions with guidance for the call type and platform you use; a group meeting may have different requirements from a one-to-one call.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Latency is the delay in sending and receiving data. Higher latency can make conversation feel less immediate.
  • Jitter is variation in when data packets arrive. Zoom identifies congestion, timing drift, and route changes as possible causes.
  • Packet loss means data fails to reach its destination. It can help explain poor call quality even when a speed test looks adequate.

Zoom’s typical call-quality guidance is latency of 150 ms or less, jitter of 40 ms or less, and packet loss of 2% or less. These are Zoom’s guidance figures, not guarantees for every app or network. Zoom explains these measures and its call statistics.

What to try when Wi-Fi is the weak link

Broadband service and the Wi-Fi connection between your router and computer are separate parts of the path. If performance improves near the router or changes by room, local signal conditions may be involved.

  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Choose the band for your location

Microsoft describes 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi as having longer range and better obstacle penetration, but slower throughput and more congestion. The 5 GHz band offers faster throughput and more non-overlapping channels, but has shorter range and weaker obstacle penetration. Which works better depends on your home layout and where you work. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guidance.

Improve placement before replacing equipment

  • Move the router toward a central location if practical.
  • Reduce the number of walls and ceilings between the router and your work device.
  • Keep the router away from nearby electronics that may interfere.
  • Test closer to the router to see whether location changes the result.

If these steps do not resolve a problem that appears local to Wi-Fi, Microsoft suggests considering newer router and network-adapter hardware that supports heavier simultaneous use. That may help with coverage or equipment limitations; it will not fix a bottleneck in the internet service coming into your home. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.

How to compare test results fairly

When comparing two results—or deciding whether a change helped—keep the conditions as similar as possible. Compare upload and download, latency, jitter, packet loss, and stability during a representative call. Note whether other household members are online, and test from the same work location. A single speed-test snapshot cannot show every condition that affects a call.
