AppleCare enhanced collection and MDM-triggered collection are two control paths for the same Apple support workflow; a local sysdiagnose is a different capture method. Apple’s current documentation applies the remote AppleCare workflow to supervised Macs running macOS 27 or later, with an AppleCare-supplied case token and an AppleCare Professional Support agreement. The Mac session is interactive: the user can consent, review the information, or cancel.

MDM tools such as Intune and Jamf Pro can initiate or manage that AppleCare command on enrolled Macs, but they do not replace the AppleCare case, token, agreement, or Apple’s analysis. A local sysdiagnose creates an archive on the Mac and is useful when support asks for a separately supplied bundle; it does not automatically create the AppleCare upload workflow.

The distinction that prevents most troubleshooting mistakes

There are three related routes, but only two are part of the documented AppleCare enhanced-log workflow:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • AppleCare case-linked collection: Apple supplies a token for a support case. The Mac collects the requested logs and uploads them to Apple, where they attach to that case.
  • MDM-triggered AppleCare collection: An administrator uses a management console or API to send the command to a managed Mac. The AppleCare token and support relationship remain necessary.
  • Local sysdiagnose: A local administrator or user starts macOS’s built-in capture. The result is a .tar.gz archive stored on the Mac until someone provides it to support.

An MDM console is therefore a control surface, not an alternative Apple support channel. It can send the command and report status, but it does not make an ordinary diagnostic bundle equivalent to Apple’s case-linked enhanced collection, nor does it give the MDM vendor automatic access to interpret Apple’s low-level logs.

Question AppleCare enhanced collection MDM-triggered AppleCare collection Local sysdiagnose
Who authorizes it? AppleCare supplies a case token; Apple’s deployment documentation requires an AppleCare Professional Support agreement. The same AppleCare token and case requirements apply; the MDM sends the command. Jamf’s documented API route also requires the relevant API permission. A local user or administrator starts the built-in capture. The cited procedure does not require an AppleCare token.
Device requirement Supervised Mac running macOS 27 or later under Apple’s current documentation. Intune documents supervised Macs on macOS 27 or later. Jamf Pro 11.29.0 notes macOS 27 in beta testing. The procedure is described for macOS, but the cited guide does not state a minimum OS version.
User interaction Always interactive on Mac: the user can consent, review information before upload, or cancel. MDM can trigger the request remotely, but Apple’s Mac interaction rule still applies. Someone must access the Mac. The Activity Monitor method includes a privacy agreement.
Where the result goes It uploads to Apple and attaches to the AppleCare ticket. Intune says the device uploads directly to Apple and that the bundle is not downloadable from the Intune admin center. Jamf says completed logs are sent to Apple. A local archive is created on the Mac. Provide the entire bundle to support when requested.
Best fit An AppleCare escalation in which Apple requests enhanced logs. Centrally initiated and monitored collection on managed endpoints during an AppleCare or enterprise-support escalation. Local troubleshooting or a separate archive requested by a support team.

How AppleCare enhanced collection works

Prerequisites

Apple’s deployment documentation, published September 17, 2026, describes remote log collection for supervised Macs running macOS 27 or later. The support organization must have an AppleCare Professional Support agreement, and AppleCare supplies a token associated with the support case. A normal consumer support interaction or an unsupervised Mac should not be treated as meeting these documented prerequisites.

The token is not a general-purpose diagnostic key. It is tied to Apple’s support workflow, so keep it with the case details and do not reuse it for unrelated incidents. If the case changes or Apple issues a new token, use the current value supplied by AppleCare.

What the Mac user sees

Mac collection is interactive. The remote request does not guarantee a silent, unattended capture. The user receives an opportunity to consent, inspect information before upload, or cancel. This matters for shared Macs, overnight maintenance windows, and incidents involving a user who is unavailable: an administrator can send the request, but a completed upload still depends on the Mac interaction being accepted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple describes a non-interactive background option for some other Apple devices, but that option does not apply to Mac. Do not promise a fully unattended Mac collection to a help desk or an incident commander.

What happens to the logs

After the user approves the session, the Mac uploads the collected data to Apple. The resulting logs attach to the AppleCare support ticket, giving Apple’s support team the case context needed for an escalation. The documented path is not a local export exercise; the intended destination is Apple’s case system.

Operational sequence

  1. Open or update the AppleCare support case and confirm that Apple has requested enhanced logs.
  2. Verify the AppleCare Professional Support agreement and obtain the token Apple supplied for that case.
  3. Confirm that the target Mac is supervised and runs macOS 27 or later.
  4. Start the AppleCare collection using Apple’s supported request path, either directly on the Mac or through an eligible MDM command.
  5. Tell the Mac user what the prompt means. The user must be able to review the information, consent to the upload, or cancel.
  6. Keep the case open while Apple receives and associates the bundle. If the user cancels, treat the collection as incomplete and ask AppleCare for the next step rather than substituting an unrelated archive without agreement.

Using Intune to trigger the AppleCare collection

What Intune documents

Microsoft’s enhanced log collection documentation was updated August 27, 2026. It describes an action for supervised Macs running macOS 27 or later and positions it for AppleCare or Enterprise Support escalations, including advanced MDM, Declarative Device Management, or operating-system issues that need more information than ordinary Collect diagnostics.

The administrator enters the AppleCare token when selecting the enhanced log collection action in the Intune admin center. Intune then sends the request to the enrolled Mac. This is still Apple’s interactive Mac workflow, so remote triggering does not remove the user-consent step.

Intune status handling

Intune reports the device action through its device action status area. The documented states are:

  • Pending: Intune has queued the request and is waiting for device processing.
  • Acknowledged: The device has received the command.
  • Completed: The collection command finished successfully from Intune’s perspective.
  • Failed: The action did not complete; use the device action details and AppleCare case context to investigate.

A completed Intune action is not the same as a downloadable file in the console. Microsoft explicitly states that enhanced log collection uploads logs directly from the device to Apple and that the bundle is not downloadable from the Intune admin center. The support team reviews it through the AppleCare case.

Practical Intune procedure

  1. In the Intune admin center, open the supervised Mac’s device actions and choose the enhanced log collection action.
  2. Enter the token supplied for the AppleCare case; do not substitute a local ticket number or an arbitrary string.
  3. Submit the action and record the device action identifier with the AppleCare case.
  4. Watch for pending, acknowledged, completed, or failed status.
  5. Coordinate with the Mac user, because Apple’s Mac session remains interactive and can be reviewed or canceled locally.
  6. When Intune reports completion, ask the AppleCare or enterprise-support contact to confirm receipt in the case. Do not search the Intune console for a downloadable archive that the documentation says is not provided there.

When Intune’s ordinary diagnostics are not enough

Intune’s standard Collect diagnostics action and AppleCare enhanced collection serve different escalation levels. Use the enhanced action when Apple or an enterprise-support team specifically requests the AppleCare path or when an OS-level issue needs the additional collection. A routine MDM inventory or policy problem may not justify the AppleCare workflow, and sending a token-less command cannot create the Apple case attachment.

Using Jamf Pro’s API route

Documented capability

Jamf Pro 11.29.0 release notes document an API command that triggers AppleCare log collection on a managed device. The release notes list the “Send MDM command information in Jamf Pro API” permission as a requirement. They also list macOS 27 and an AppleCare for Enterprise agreement for beta testing, and say the completed logs are sent to Apple.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those version and agreement details are time-sensitive. The release notes say the feature was tested with the latest Apple beta releases, so confirm the current Jamf release notes, supported production macOS version, entitlement, and Apple agreement before making it part of a deployment standard.

What the API does not change

The API is a transport and automation mechanism. It does not remove Apple’s token requirement, create an AppleCare case, or turn Jamf into the interpreter of Apple’s low-level logs. The managed Mac still follows Apple’s interactive Mac behavior, and Apple remains the destination for the completed collection.

Implementation checklist

  1. Confirm that the organization has the AppleCare agreement and an active case with a token for the target incident.
  2. Verify that the Jamf administrator or service account has the “Send MDM command information in Jamf Pro API” permission.
  3. Confirm the Mac is enrolled and supervised, and validate the macOS and Jamf versions against current release documentation.
  4. Use Jamf’s documented API command to trigger the AppleCare collection for the selected managed device.
  5. Record the API request, target device, case token reference, and response in the incident record.
  6. Coordinate with the user for the interactive consent prompt and ask Apple to confirm that the resulting logs arrived in the case.

Do not infer an API endpoint, response schema, or production support guarantee from the release-note summary alone. Those details can change between Jamf versions and should be taken from the current Jamf API documentation for the version you operate.

Generating a local macOS sysdiagnose

What sysdiagnose contains

The local method is a broad snapshot rather than an AppleCare token exchange. The cited guide describes a .tar.gz archive containing performance, filesystem, process, kernel, system and crash logs, hardware and software configuration, network information, and power information. Because the archive can include sensitive operational data, handle it under your organization’s support and privacy procedures.

Three built-in ways to start it

  • Keyboard shortcut: Use macOS’s built-in sysdiagnose keyboard shortcut. The capture runs locally and produces the archive without an AppleCare token.
  • Terminal: Open Terminal and run sudo sysdiagnose -f ~/Desktop/. Enter administrator credentials when prompted. The -f option directs the output to the specified Desktop location.
  • Activity Monitor: Open Activity Monitor, use its sysdiagnose command, and accept the privacy agreement presented by the utility.

The exact archive name and creation time depend on the Mac and the capture. Allow the process to finish before moving or compressing the result again.

Supplying the archive to support

If support requests a sysdiagnose file, provide the entire bundle, not selected log fragments. Partial extraction can remove relationships between process, kernel, network, and power records that the support engineer needs. Use the transfer method approved by the support organization, and verify that the recipient expects a local sysdiagnose rather than an AppleCare case upload.

What this method cannot do

Running sysdiagnose locally does not, by itself, open an AppleCare case, attach a file to an existing ticket, or satisfy a request for Apple’s enhanced collection. It is a separate path. If AppleCare specifically supplied a token and requested the case-linked workflow, ask whether a local archive is also wanted before substituting one for the documented upload.

Choosing the right route

Choose AppleCare enhanced collection when

  • AppleCare has an active escalation and supplied a token.
  • The Mac meets the supervised and macOS 27-or-later requirements.
  • Apple needs the bundle attached directly to its support case.
  • The user can participate in the interactive consent and review prompt.

Choose an MDM trigger when

  • The Macs are centrally managed and an administrator needs to target a specific endpoint or fleet subset.
  • You need an auditable command and status trail in Intune or Jamf.
  • The support case already has the required AppleCare token and agreement.
  • Remote initiation is operationally easier than asking a user to start a local capture, while still allowing for the required user interaction.

Choose local sysdiagnose when

  • A support engineer asks for a local archive rather than an AppleCare case upload.
  • The Mac is not eligible for the documented remote AppleCare workflow.
  • You need a broad snapshot during a live local troubleshooting session.
  • The user or administrator can access the Mac and transfer the complete archive through an approved channel.

Failure modes and recovery

The command remains pending

For an MDM-triggered request, verify that the Mac is online, enrolled, supervised, and running a supported macOS version. Check whether the user is waiting at the interactive prompt. A pending state does not prove that Apple has received logs; continue to monitor the device action and the AppleCare case separately.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The action is acknowledged but the case has no bundle

An acknowledged command means the device received the request, not that the user consented or that upload finished. Confirm the local prompt, ask the user to complete the review, and have AppleCare check the case after Intune or Jamf reports completion.

The action fails

Recheck the AppleCare token, case status, device supervision, macOS version, network reachability, and—on Jamf—the API permission. Do not repeatedly send a token without confirming that AppleCare issued it for the same case. If the remote path remains unavailable, ask support whether a local sysdiagnose is an acceptable alternative.

The user cancels

Respect the cancellation. Explain what information Apple requested, then obtain a new consent decision or follow the support team’s alternative procedure. Cancellation is not a technical success and should not be reported as completed collection.

The archive is incomplete or altered

For a local sysdiagnose, return to the Mac and create a fresh archive, then provide the complete .tar.gz file. Avoid sending individual log files unless support explicitly asks for them. For AppleCare collection, do not attempt to reconstruct the case attachment from a local copy; ask Apple to issue the appropriate next action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy, access, and incident handling

All three methods can expose detailed information about software, processes, hardware, networking, power use, and system failures. Limit collection to the affected device and incident, tell the user what consent means, and use the organization’s approved transfer and retention controls for any local archive. The MDM console’s status record is not a substitute for access controls around the AppleCare case or the sysdiagnose file.

For managed fleets, record the device identifier, operating-system version, management system, case number, token owner, user-consent outcome, and final status. Keep the token out of general chat channels and automation logs where it is not needed. For local captures, record where the archive was stored and when it was transferred, then remove temporary copies according to policy.

Version and support-contract checks before deployment

This workflow is changing with the new OS generation and vendor releases. Apple’s current description is dated September 17, 2026; Intune’s page was updated August 27, 2026; and Jamf’s 11.29.0 notes describe beta testing with the latest Apple beta releases. Before standardizing a runbook, recheck:

  • Whether the Mac is supervised and on macOS 27 or a later supported release.
  • Whether the organization’s AppleCare Professional Support or AppleCare for Enterprise agreement covers the intended case.
  • Whether Apple supplied a current token for the exact incident.
  • Whether the installed Intune or Jamf version still exposes the documented action and required permission.
  • Whether the support team wants case-linked enhanced logs, a local sysdiagnose, or both.

The sysdiagnose procedure cited here comes from a Kandji guide that warns Kandji is deprecated and instructs migration to Iru by December 1, 2026. Use the page for the described macOS capture methods, but verify the current support ownership and documentation before naming that management platform in an operational recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for help desks and Mac administrators

Use AppleCare enhanced collection when Apple has supplied a token and needs logs attached to an active case. Use Intune or Jamf to initiate and monitor that same AppleCare command across managed Macs, not to replace Apple’s agreement, token, user interaction, or analysis. Use local sysdiagnose when support asks for a separately delivered archive or when the AppleCare workflow is unavailable. The destination, authorization, and user-consent model—not merely the word “diagnostics”—determine whether the three methods are interchangeable; they are not.
