There is no single fix for Remote Desktop failing on a “latest dev build”: Microsoft has documented separate problems involving Remote Desktop Services (RDS), graphics, sign-in, freezes, and window sizing. Start by identifying the full Windows build and update, Insider channel, client app, destination service, error, and failure timing. Those details determine whether a published fix applies—or whether the cause is still unknown.
First identify where and how the connection fails
Before changing settings, establish whether the preview build is on the computer making the connection, the remote computer, or both. Then record:
- Windows version and update: Run
winveron each relevant computer and check Windows Update history for the installed KB number. - Insider channel: Note whether the machine is on Dev, Canary, Experimental (Future Platforms), or another channel.
- Destination: Identify whether you are connecting to a remote PC, Remote Desktop Services (RDS), Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), Windows 365, or Microsoft Dev Box.
- Client: Record the exact app name and version, such as Windows App or the retired Remote Desktop app from Microsoft Store.
- Failure stage: Distinguish failure to start a session, an authentication or sign-in error, a freeze after connecting, a disconnect after several minutes, a graphics error, or a window-size problem.
- Exact message or code: Copy the error text and any code rather than describing it only as “can’t connect.”
Use these details to match your case to a Microsoft notice. Similar-looking failures can have different causes and fixes.
Check the September 2026 RDS issue if sessions fail after several minutes
Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 Windows security update record describes a Remote Desktop Services problem affecting some organizations after the September 2026 security update. Reported symptoms include connections that fail after several minutes, sign-in problems, and servers hanging at “Please wait for the Remote Desktop Configuration.” Related management tools may also become unresponsive.

This notice applies to RDS, not Remote Desktop generally. Microsoft says the issue does not affect Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop. The record says Windows updates released on or after September 14, 2026, including KB5129195, resolve this specific problem. If your environment uses RDS and its symptoms and update scope match, install the latest applicable Windows update and verify whether the issue clears. Do not apply this diagnosis to a remote PC or cloud desktop solely because the connection uses Remote Desktop.
A separate issue in the same update record concerns some Credential Guard-protected machine accounts losing their secure channel with an on-premises Active Directory domain. That can prevent interactive sign-in with valid domain credentials. It is a domain trust and sign-in problem, not evidence of a general RDP transport failure.

Match the symptom to the documented build regression
Insider fixes are specific to a build and behavior. A note that fixes a display issue does not establish a fix for a connection that never starts.

For the exact announcement and whether its fix is included in your build, use the matching Windows Insider release notes or Microsoft update record. A build number alone is not enough if the reported symptom differs.

Check whether the Remote Desktop client matches the service
Microsoft says the Remote Desktop app for Windows from Microsoft Store is no longer supported and is unavailable for download or installation. Since September 30, 2025, connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box are blocked when using that retired app. Microsoft directs users of those cloud services to Windows App.
The retirement block does not affect connections to Remote Desktop Services or remote PCs. Client MSI support varies by public cloud, government cloud, 21Vianet, and AVD Classic, so check Microsoft’s current Windows App documentation for your specific service before changing clients.

Use a symptom-led troubleshooting sequence
- Capture the machine details. On the client and, if accessible, the host, run
winver; record the complete build, Insider channel, installed KB, and whether the preview is on the client, host, or both. - Name the destination and app. Identify the service or remote-PC type and the exact client app/version. For Windows 365, AVD, or Dev Box, check whether you are using the retired Store app.
- Pin down the failure. Copy the error or code and note whether failure happens before sign-in, during sign-in, immediately after connecting, after several minutes, or only as a rendering/window-size problem.
- Check the matching official notice. For RDS, compare the September 2026 symptoms and update scope. For cloud desktops, check client compatibility. For an Insider defect, confirm the release note matches both the build and symptom.
- Apply only the matching remedy. Install a resolving update when the documented RDS issue applies, or use the supported client for the destination. Do not treat an old preview-build fix as a universal workaround.
- If no notice matches, report a reproducible issue. Submit it through Windows Feedback Hub with the build, destination, client version, exact error, and reproduction steps. Investigate DNS, firewall, gateway, network, and credentials based on the failing connection path rather than changing them all at once.
When the cause is still unclear
Microsoft has documented multiple Remote Desktop regressions across Windows builds and services, but the notices do not establish one general cause for every current Dev-build connection failure. If your build, destination, client, and symptom do not match a published issue, the cause remains undetermined until those details are investigated. The most useful next step is a reproducible report with the exact failure stage and error, not assuming that every failed session is the same bug.
