Remote call forwarding automatically routes calls made to one telephone number to another number. The caller dials the original number, but the forwarded call is answered at the destination. Depending on the provider, “remote” may describe the forwarding service itself or the ability to change call-forwarding settings while away from the phone.
What remote call forwarding means
AT&T Business defines remote call forwarding as a feature that forwards calls from an old number to a new one, or from one specified number to another. Verizon’s local-service definition similarly describes calls to an equipped number being forwarded automatically to another dialable number. The exact name, setup, charges and limits depend on the telephone provider and service.
In a traditional carrier setup, the caller dials the original number and the carrier routes the call onward. The caller and the person answering therefore do not have to use the same number. Providers’ modern cloud phone systems may offer related routing through their own platforms; the available carrier descriptions do not establish one technical implementation that applies to every service.

Remote forwarding service versus remote activation
The phrase can refer to two related but distinct things. A provider may call its number-to-number routing feature “remote call forwarding.” Separately, remote activation means changing call-forwarding settings from a location away from the phone or service being managed.
For example, AT&T’s instructions for its local home phone service describe calling an assigned access number, entering the home number and PIN, and following voice prompts to set or deactivate forwarding. Those directions, including any access number and codes, apply to that AT&T service; they are not universal carrier instructions. Wireless, digital and business services may have different controls. AT&T’s remote call-forwarding instructions were last updated April 2, 2025.

How it differs from other forwarding options
Remote call forwarding is not necessarily the only routing mode available. A service may forward every call, forward only when the line is busy or unanswered, or route calls from selected callers. Verizon One Talk documents always, busy, no-answer and selective forwarding; names and controls vary across providers.

Charges for the forwarded call
Forwarding may create a charge for the call leg from the original number to the destination. Verizon’s local-service definition says the customer is responsible for applicable usage charges between the remote-call-forwarding number and the terminating number. That term is specific to the service described there; ask your own provider how forwarded calls are billed under your plan.

Service limits and call quality
Verizon’s cited local-service definition says transmission quality is not guaranteed on remotely forwarded calls and describes one forwarded call at a time for that service. These are not universal limits. Confirm the capacity and quality terms for the particular line or phone system you use.
Eligibility and current procedures
Check that the provider permits your intended destination and that your plan supports the forwarding mode you need. For setup, use instructions for the exact service and account type. Carrier procedures, availability, geographic eligibility and pricing can change, so verify current details with the provider.
