If you’re asking “what’s coming next for Remix?”, Bytes #321 offers a dated answer: its September 9, 2024 issue recapped a livestream by Ryan Florence and Michael Jackson and previewed three themes—array-based route configuration for React Router v7, type-safe routing, and small packages built around web standards. It is a 2024 roadmap preview, not a current release report; the present status of those items is not established here.
What did the September 2024 preview describe?
The issue framed Remix as an “ecosystem of principles, patterns, and packages,” rather than only a single framework. Its roadmap recap focused on two route-related ideas and a broader set of standalone packages.
Explicit route configuration with routes.ts
The issue said routes.ts would configure React Router v7 routes as an array, rather than rely on a file-based routing convention. That describes the direction presented in the livestream recap; it should not be read as confirmation of a particular release or current implementation.

Type-safe routing
The recap also connected routes.ts with more intelligent type awareness across an application. It did not specify implementation details or quantify expected productivity gains, so the claim is best understood at that level.

Focused packages using web standards
The third theme was a collection of smaller packages, each intended to do one thing, follow web standards, and interoperate both with and without Remix. Examples named in the issue were file-storage, form-data-parser, and headers. These examples describe the preview, not a guarantee of current maintenance or availability.
What does the roadmap say about Remix’s direction?
The three themes fit the issue’s broader description of Remix as an ecosystem. The route proposals concerned how applications describe routes and gain type awareness; the package proposal extended the idea beyond framework-specific features toward focused tools intended to work across environments. That is the direction the 2024 recap conveyed, not evidence that every package or capability was subsequently delivered.

How did Remix describe its development process?
In a November 11, 2022 article, Ryan Florence, Co-Founder of Remix, wrote: “Today we are completely opening up our development process.” The article described a public roadmap process in which contributors submitted proposals, administrators accepted work into the roadmap, owners were assigned, and an RFC came before development. Its sequence was “Proposal → Roadmap → RFC → Develop → Ship.” This explains how the project described its process at that time; it does not establish that every procedural detail remains unchanged. Read the official open-development article for that historical account.

On October 31, 2022, Shopify announced that the Remix team was joining the company, described Remix as an open-source web framework, and said Shopify would use it across projects including Hydrogen. That announcement is useful background, but it does not establish present-day ownership, staffing, roadmap decisions, or runtime support. See Shopify’s announcement.

How should you check whether a roadmap item shipped?
The September 2024 issue and the historical development-process article do not establish whether routes.ts, type-safe routing, or the named packages are currently shipped, changed, or deprecated. Before relying on any of them, check the current official React Router or Remix documentation and roadmap material. Treat the issue as evidence of what was previewed, not as a release note.
