Reminiscence runs on Minecraft: Java Edition 1.20.1 with Forge. Install the same 1.20.1 Forge pack on every client and server. If you want the pack’s Modern Beta world type on a server, create that world in single-player first, then copy the completed world into the server’s world directory.

This guide explains the pack’s deliberately mixed design, exact client and server workflow, release choices, compatibility checks, and recovery steps for the problems that most often prevent a correct setup.

What Reminiscence is

Reminiscence is a Vanilla+ exploration pack described by its author as “Modern Minecraft, Beta-fied.” It recreates the look, pacing, terrain and atmosphere associated with Minecraft Alpha and Beta while retaining selected conveniences and adding a large amount of modern content. It is intentionally not a museum-quality Beta recreation: the project states that it is not, and will never claim to be, a 100% accurate Beta experience.

The practical result is a hybrid. You get older presentation and mechanics in the places where they define the mood, but you also encounter structures, dimensions, equipment and farming systems that did not exist in the original era.

What changes in the gameplay

Reminiscence’s Beta-inspired rules are more noticeable than a texture swap. The pack removes or changes several systems that define modern vanilla survival.

  • No hunger system: food is not managed through the modern hunger bar and sprint-food loop.
  • No sprinting: movement has the slower, more deliberate feel associated with early Minecraft.
  • No enchanting: the familiar enchantment-table progression is absent.
  • No villagers or villages: you should not plan a trading-hall or village-based opening strategy.
  • Beta 1.7.3-style terrain generation: the broad terrain behavior follows the older generation style while still using modern biomes.
  • Beta lighting: lighting and darkness are tuned toward the period aesthetic rather than current vanilla presentation.
  • Period-style textures and sounds: visual and audio choices reinforce the early-game atmosphere.

These restrictions change planning. Exploration, manual resource collection and base placement matter more when there is no sprinting, no villager economy and no enchantment ladder to accelerate progression.

Modern additions inside the Beta framework

The pack does not stop at nostalgia. Its documented additions include:

  • Farmer’s Delight for expanded cooking and food preparation.
  • Supplementaries for decorative and utility blocks.
  • INMIS backpacks for extra portable storage.
  • The Aether for an additional dimension and its associated progression.
  • Copper armor and tools as an extra equipment tier and material choice.
  • YUNG’s structure changes that revise generated structures.
  • True Ending: Ender Dragon Overhaul for a more elaborate End dimension finale.
  • Amplified Nether for more dramatic Nether terrain.

Because these systems come from different design eras, the pack is best understood as “Beta rules and presentation with modern expansion content,” not as a strict historical simulator.

Before you install

Use a single, clearly identified pack version for the whole installation. The safest baseline is the current 1.20.1 Forge file shown by the platform you intend to use, rather than copying an old profile from a different release.

Checklist

  • Install Minecraft: Java Edition and a launcher that can run Forge modpacks.
  • Choose either the official Modrinth project listing or the official CurseForge listing.
  • Confirm that the selected file says Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
  • Use the same file, or the same precisely matched server package, for every player and the server.
  • Back up existing saves before opening them with a new pack version.
  • Leave enough storage for the instance, generated chunks, backups and logs. The project’s official pages do not publish a universal minimum disk figure.

No authoritative official figure establishes a minimum RAM allocation, recommended CPU model or maximum concurrent-player count. Do not treat an internet estimate as a Reminiscence benchmark. Start with the launcher’s normal Java allocation, monitor memory and tick behavior, and adjust after observing your own world and player count.

Install Reminiscence on a client

Modrinth App procedure

Modrinth’s help documentation describes the basic app flow as browsing to a pack and clicking Install. Use this sequence:

  1. Open the Modrinth App and sign in if the app requests an account.
  2. Open the content browser and search for Reminiscence.
  3. Open the project page, inspect the available files and select a release marked for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
  4. Click Install. Allow the app to create a separate instance rather than adding the pack’s mods to an unrelated profile.
  5. Wait for the launcher to download the pack and its dependencies.
  6. Launch the new instance once. The first run can take longer while Forge creates configuration files and the pack builds caches.
  7. At the title screen, open the installation’s version or profile details and verify that the displayed game version is 1.20.1 and the loader is Forge.

Do not add a second loader to the same instance. A Fabric or NeoForge profile is not an interchangeable substitute for the Forge build listed for Reminiscence.

Using another supported launcher

If you use the CurseForge app or another launcher that supports the official project file, open the Reminiscence project, choose the 1.20.1 Forge release and use that launcher’s install or import action. Launcher labels differ, so verify the resulting profile rather than assuming a similarly named file is compatible. Keep the profile isolated from other modpacks and do not mix files from different Reminiscence releases.

First-run validation

  1. Start the instance without adding optional mods.
  2. Confirm that the main menu appears without a missing-mod or loader error.
  3. Create a temporary test world and enter it.
  4. Check that movement, lighting and terrain have the expected Beta-inspired behavior.
  5. Quit normally and reopen the instance once to confirm that the profile and configuration persist.

After this validation, create your real survival world. Keeping the first test separate makes it easier to distinguish a bad installation from a world-specific problem.

Create a Modern Beta world correctly

The project’s server guidance contains a crucial limitation: if you want the Modern Beta world type on a server, you must first create the world in single-player and then import it. This applies whether the server uses a server pack or the Kinetic approach mentioned by the project.

Single-player world creation

  1. Launch the fully installed Reminiscence client.
  2. Choose Singleplayer, then Create New World.
  3. Select the gameplay settings and world name you actually intend to use on the server. Avoid changing the world-generation type after creation.
  4. Enter the world and allow the initial terrain around the spawn area to generate.
  5. Quit to the title screen, then close the game completely so all region and metadata files are flushed.

The world folder now contains the generated data that identifies the Modern Beta terrain. A newly generated server world does not automatically inherit that same result simply because the server has the same mods.

Locate and preserve the save

In a standard Java installation, single-player saves are stored beneath the Minecraft instance’s saves directory. A custom launcher may use a different instance directory, so use that launcher’s “open folder” or instance-location control when available. Copy the entire world folder, not only the visible region files. Include the level metadata, player data, dimensions, region directories, data packs and any generated structures.

Import the world into the server

  1. Stop the Forge server before copying anything. Never overwrite a live world while the server is writing region files.
  2. Make a dated backup of the server’s current world directory.
  3. Copy the complete single-player world folder into the server’s main directory.
  4. Set the server’s world-name setting, commonly represented by level-name in the server properties file, to the exact imported folder name if the folder is not already named world.
  5. Start the server with the same Reminiscence release and Forge 1.20.1 build used to create the world.
  6. Join with a client running the identical pack version. Walk beyond the original spawn area only after confirming that the imported terrain and dimensions load normally.

If the server starts with a freshly generated ordinary world, stop it and inspect the folder name and world-name setting before exploring further. Continuing to play can generate new chunks in the wrong world and make recovery more complicated.

Set up the Forge server

Select the server package

Use the server package supplied for the same Reminiscence release whenever one is available. The official project instructions explicitly cover a server pack and Kinetic-based setups, but the non-negotiable requirement is version identity: Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, and the same pack release must align.

Initial server launch

  1. Place the server files in a new, dedicated directory rather than inside a client instance.
  2. Run the Forge server’s generated launch script or server command once to create its configuration and world directories.
  3. Read the generated log for loader and mod errors before importing a valuable save.
  4. Complete the server’s required EULA acceptance using the official Minecraft server terms and the file generated by the first launch.
  5. Stop the server cleanly, then perform the Modern Beta world import described above.
  6. Start it again and keep the console visible during the first load so you can catch missing dependencies, registry errors or failed world conversion.

Do not copy a client-only configuration blindly into the server. Use the files included with the server package and only transfer world data and settings that the pack documentation requires.

Connecting players

Every connecting player should install the same 1.20.1 Forge Reminiscence release. A server can be online while rejecting clients that have a different pack revision, a different Forge build or an extra/missing mod. Ask players to remove duplicate profiles and launch the dedicated Reminiscence instance instead of selecting a similarly named vanilla profile.

Release choices and performance changes

Release information is time-sensitive. CurseForge lists Reminiscence-2.0.2.zip as its latest 1.20.1 Forge release as of October 3, 2026. Modrinth documents 2.0.0-hotfix2 as a 1.20.1 Forge release with performance, compatibility and licensing work. If the two platforms display different newest files, select one platform’s release and use its matching server package rather than combining them.

Troubleshoot the common failures

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Forge reports incompatible mods at launch The profile uses the wrong Minecraft version, loader or pack revision. Open the instance details, select the 1.20.1 Forge file and remove mods copied from another profile.
The game opens, but the world looks like ordinary modern terrain You created a new world instead of importing the single-player Modern Beta save. Stop the server, back up the current folder, import the completed single-player world and point the world-name setting to it.
Players are rejected while the server is online Client and server pack contents or Forge builds differ. Have every player install the exact server release and launch that dedicated profile.
A server stops during startup with a missing dependency The server package is incomplete or files from a client-only installation were substituted. Re-extract a clean server package for the selected release and compare the startup log before restoring the world.
Terrain generation stalls or the first load is unusually slow Large amounts of new terrain are being generated, or the instance is building first-run caches. Wait for the initial generation to finish, keep the server console open and avoid repeatedly force-closing the process. Test with a small area before inviting players.
Performance remains poor after a hotfix Optimization components improve code paths but cannot guarantee a particular frame rate on every computer. Lower view and simulation distances, reduce particle settings, close competing applications and monitor both client frame time and server tick time.
A save appears damaged after changing releases The world was opened by a different pack revision without a backup. Restore the dated backup, test the new release on a copy and only migrate the live world after a clean startup.

How to keep the world safe over time

  • Back up before every pack update. Preserve the world directory and the server configuration together so you can roll back both.
  • Change one variable at a time. Do not update the pack, change Forge and add third-party mods in a single maintenance window.
  • Stop cleanly. Use the server console’s normal stop action so region files and player data finish writing.
  • Test on a copy. Make a duplicate of the world and let the candidate release generate a few chunks before touching the live server.
  • Keep clients synchronized. Record the exact release filename in your server notes and give players that same reference.

Who should choose Reminiscence?

Choose Reminiscence if you want early-Minecraft atmosphere, slower movement, Beta-style terrain and lighting, and a world that still offers modern dimensions, farming, storage and structure content. It is a poor fit if your priority is an exact historical Beta recreation, modern sprint-and-hunger progression, villager trading or enchantment-based optimization.

For a server, the decisive question is whether you are willing to create the Modern Beta world locally and manage an imported save. Once that step is complete, the remainder is conventional Forge pack administration: keep the release identical, protect the world with backups and investigate startup logs before changing files.
