Handle keyboard commands with keyboard events, but detect text changes from the control’s input events and value. For dependable behavior, use event.key for the interpreted key, decide whether held keys should repeat, and make every custom interaction operable by keyboard without trapping focus.
Choose the right event for the job
A keyboard event does not necessarily correspond to one character appearing in a field. The browser’s keyboard-event sequence begins with keydown. When a key produces text in an input, textarea, or contenteditable element, beforeinput and input follow; keyup completes the sequence. The sequence and behavior are described in MDN’s KeyboardEvent.key reference.
Use keyboard events for commands and navigation
Use keydown or keyup when the application needs to respond to a command or navigation key, such as Enter or ArrowDown. For example, a menu may move its active item when the user presses an arrow key. Do not treat every keydown as proof that a character was inserted.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

When the goal is to react to what is in a text field, observe input and read the control’s resulting value. Use beforeinput when the application needs to inspect or respond before an edit is applied. Text entry can involve more than a simple key press, so mapping a keydown event directly to one inserted character is unreliable. See MDN’s event-sequence guidance.

Interpret the key without assuming a keyboard layout
KeyboardEvent.key reports the interpreted key value, taking modifiers and the active keyboard layout into account. That makes it useful for commands such as Enter, Escape, and ArrowDown, or for a shortcut defined in terms of the character the user produces. It also means the same physical key and modifier combination can yield different values on different layouts. MDN illustrates this with Shift+2 on US and UK keyboards, which produces different interpreted values.
Write handlers around the value your application intends to recognize, and avoid assuming that a particular physical key always produces a particular character. Layout differences are especially important for character-based shortcuts. The MDN reference explains the key value and layout example.

Choose whether holding a key repeats an action
Holding a key can cause repeated keydown events, and a character key can also produce repeated text input. Decide deliberately whether that behavior suits the interaction. Repetition can be useful for continuous movement or scrolling; it may be undesirable for a one-time action such as opening a dialog.
For an action that should happen only once per press, ignore automatically repeated keydown events when event.repeat is true:

- Split-Key Ergonomic Design: One-piece split layout separates keys into left and right zones to reduce wrist bending and support a natural hand position, helping minimize strain during long hours of typing.
- Long Key Travel & Tactile Feedback: Extended key travel delivers responsive, tactile feedback with audible confirmation, similar to brown mechanical switches. Built for durability with up to 20 million keystrokes.
- Old-School Curved Row Design: Stepped, curved key rows promote a natural typing posture and reduce fatigue during long sessions. Made from high-quality ABS with membrane switches and 4.2 mm key travel.
- Ergonomic Curved Keycaps: Curved keycaps with flatter tops and back edges fit fingertip contours for improved comfort and control. Available in black, beige, and white color options.
- Natural Learning Curve: Ergonomic shape may require a short adjustment period. Most users adapt within 1–2 weeks and experience improved comfort and reduced wrist pressure with continued use.
element.addEventListener("keydown", (event) => {
if (event.repeat) return;
if (event.key === "Enter") {
activate();
}
});
KeyboardEvent.repeat indicates automatic repetition. Check support against your project’s browser and device range: MDN notes that the property may not work in older browsers or devices. See MDN’s repeat-property reference.
Keep custom interactions keyboard-accessible
Users must be able to reach and operate all functionality through a keyboard interface, and they must be able to move focus away from interactive regions. Keyboard interfaces include more than a physical keyboard: they can also involve speech input, on-screen keyboards, or scanning software. WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 2.1.1 states: “All functionality of the content is operable through a keyboard interface without requiring specific timings for individual keystrokes, except where the underlying function requires input that depends on the path of the user’s movement and not just the endpoints.” Read W3C’s explanation of the Keyboard criterion.

Prefer native controls where they fit
Native controls already provide familiar keyboard behavior. If a custom widget is necessary, preserve clear focus and implement the expected keyboard interaction for that kind of control. W3C advises following platform and user-agent conventions where practical, since unfamiliar interaction methods impose extra learning on users. See W3C’s Keyboard criterion guidance and its accessibility principles.

Do not make a feature available only through a pointer-specific event. W3C’s G90 technique says: “To do this, make sure that all event handlers triggered by non-keyboard UI events are also associated with a keyboard-based event, or provide redundant keyboard-based mechanisms to accomplish the functionality provided by other device-specific functions.” G90 is one example of a way to meet accessibility needs; it is not the only valid implementation. See the WCAG explanation and W3C’s accessibility development tips.

Check the app using only a keyboard
Test the actual paths a user must take, rather than checking only that individual key handlers exist. W3C recommends keyboard-only checking as part of accessibility work. Use this checklist:
- Reach every interactive control and feature without a pointer.
- Operate each feature, including actions otherwise triggered by pointer events.
- Confirm that focus is visible and moves in a sensible order.
- Move focus into and back out of each interactive region; verify there is no keyboard focus trap.
- For text fields, verify that typing changes the control value and that application logic observes the resulting input rather than relying on keydown-to-character assumptions.
- For commands that can be held, check whether repeated activation is intended and handle
event.repeatwhen it is not.
W3C describes keyboard access and avoiding focus traps in its Accessibility Principles; its development tips provide further keyboard-only checking context.
