Before you reimage a server for Odoo, confirm the Odoo release and edition, choose an operating system supported by that release, plan PostgreSQL connectivity, and verify how you will recover the existing database and uploaded files. Reinstalling Odoo gives you an application installation; it does not, by itself, restore an existing business instance. Do not erase the server until you have a recovery plan you can verify.
What to check before reimaging
Treat a reimage as a destructive rebuild, not as an Odoo upgrade or database restore. First decide whether the goal is a clean Odoo installation or recovery of an existing instance. Then establish these details:
- Odoo release and edition: Record the major version and whether you use Community or Enterprise. Enterprise package access has its own requirements.
- Target operating system: Check the documentation for the exact Odoo release rather than assuming support carries over between versions.
- Database location: Determine whether PostgreSQL will run on the Odoo host or on a separate server, and how the application will reach it.
- Data recovery: Identify the backup and restore procedure for the database and any separately stored files, including uploaded attachments. Verify that the required backup data is available before wiping the server.
- Reporting needs: Check the target release’s PDF-rendering dependencies if Odoo reports need headers and footers.
The official installation material linked below does not provide a complete destructive-reimage and recovery runbook. Use the backup and restore instructions for your exact Odoo release and deployment before proceeding; do not infer a restore procedure from the steps for installing the application.

Odoo’s packaged-installer documentation lists different operating systems for different releases. The following are release-specific statements in the cited package pages, not a promise that every installation method or configuration is supported:

| Odoo release | Operating systems named in package documentation | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Odoo 19 | Ubuntu Noble (24.04 LTS) | Odoo 19 packaged installers |
| Odoo 18 | Debian Bookworm (12) and Ubuntu Jammy (22.04 LTS) or later | Odoo 18 packaged installers |
These lists should not be carried forward or backward as a general Odoo compatibility rule. Recheck the package page for the release you intend to install before selecting an image or following commands.
Choose an installation route
The package and source routes are not interchangeable shortcuts. Choose based on the target release, operating system, maintenance needs, and whether the rebuild is for development or a standard service deployment.

| Route | May fit when | Important considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Distribution package | You want a standard installation on a supported distribution with Odoo set up as a service. | Check the package page for release and OS compatibility. Odoo says Enterprise packages require access as a paying on-premise customer or partner. Odoo 19 packaged installers; Odoo 18 packaged installers. |
| Source installation | You are developing or need greater control over the source and dependency setup. | Dependencies require more manual management. Odoo’s source guide recommends distribution packages for dependencies and warns that pip may cause security or broken-dependency problems. Odoo source installation. |
| Windows package | You need a test setup or a single-user local instance. | Odoo discourages production deployment on Windows because of platform limitations and risks. Odoo 19 packaged installers. |
For a source installation, follow the source guide for the target release; for a package installation, follow that release’s package instructions. Avoid relying on fixed commands copied from a different release or operating system because package availability and dependencies change.

Plan PostgreSQL and network access
Odoo requires PostgreSQL. In the documented package setup, the usual default is a PostgreSQL server on the same host. If the database will be remote, settle the connection design before rebuilding: the Odoo host needs a supported, secure way to reach the database, and the database must be configured to accept the intended connection.

Odoo 16’s configuration reference describes PostgreSQL connections using UNIX sockets by default, with loopback connections also available. It discusses SSH tunneling and network access, potentially with SSL, for split-host setups. Those exact defaults and settings are from an older, release-specific reference; consult the current deployment documentation for the Odoo version you are installing rather than applying Odoo 16 settings unchanged. Odoo 16 deployment documentation.
Account for PDF report dependencies
Odoo 18’s package documentation says wkhtmltopdf must be installed manually at version 0.12.6 for PDF headers and footers. Check the package documentation for your intended release and confirm whether your reports depend on those features before choosing dependencies. Do not assume this version requirement applies to every Odoo release. Odoo 18 packaged installers.

Rebuild in a safe order
This is a planning sequence, not a tested command-by-command reimage or restore procedure. Use the official instructions for your selected release and hosting layout.
- Record the target: Identify the exact Odoo major release and edition, then check its current installation documentation for supported operating systems.
- Map the database: Decide whether PostgreSQL will be local or remote and document the intended connection arrangement.
- Verify recovery readiness: Confirm that you have a recoverable backup of the database and any separately stored files needed by the existing instance. Follow the official, version-specific recovery guidance; do not start destructive disk work without it.
- Select package or source: Choose the documented route for the target release and follow its instructions. Treat Windows as a testing or single-user local option, not a recommended production platform.
- Check the rebuilt installation: Once installation and recovery are complete, verify service startup, database connectivity, required addons, and PDF/report behavior relevant to your instance.
When to stop and get help
Pause before wiping the server if you cannot identify the Odoo release, cannot locate or validate the backups, do not know where attachment files are stored, or are unsure how a remote PostgreSQL server will be reached. For a production instance, an Odoo implementation, migration, or managed-hosting specialist may help plan recovery; confirm the provider’s suitability and terms independently.
