To prepare a server for Virtualmin (which runs on Webmin), reinstall it with a clean, supported operating system, preserve any data you need first, and then use Virtualmin’s current automated installer. The instructions below assume “WebAdmin” means the Virtualmin/Webmin stack; if you mean a different control panel, its requirements and reinstall steps may differ.
Before you reimage: protect data and configuration
Reimaging replaces the server’s operating system and may erase data. Before starting, save anything you need to keep, including website files, databases or dumps, mail, configuration, keys, and DNS settings. Confirm with your hosting provider how its reinstall operation handles attached disks, snapshots, and backups; those details vary by provider.
Virtualmin recommends a freshly installed Grade A supported operating system. Its FAQ advises backing up all data before attempting installation on an active server, since the result depends on prior system changes and packages may be removed to meet Virtualmin’s dependencies. Choose an operating system Virtualmin supports
Virtualmin’s support matrix, dated January 21, 2026, identifies Grade A systems as having an automated installation script and maintained software repository. It lists these releases for automated installation:

Architecture support varies by operating-system family. Check the current Virtualmin OS support matrix for your exact release and architecture immediately before installing. Do not assume an unlisted release or a beta/pre-release system is supported. Webmin may work on many UNIX-like systems, but that does not make Virtualmin’s automated installation equally supported across them.
If several listed images are available, choose a supported release you know well and intend to maintain. Virtualmin recommends the latest supported version of the operating system the administrator knows best rather than naming one distribution as universally preferable.

Prepare a clean server image
Check capacity and DNS
Virtualmin’s automated installation guide recommends at least 1 GiB of RAM and 1 GiB of free disk space, with additional room for domains and mail. For a full installation that includes mail, spam filtering, and virus scanning, it recommends 4 GiB of RAM or more. These are vendor recommendations, not performance guarantees; actual needs depend on workload. The guide also calls for a domain whose DNS records point to the server’s IP address. Keep the base installation unmodified
Start with the provider’s fresh OS image and avoid pre-installing or tweaking extra packages before running Virtualmin’s installer. Virtualmin warns that package changes can cause conflicts. It also advises adding third-party repositories only after Virtualmin is installed, and then with care. Review Virtualmin’s automated-install instructions.

Install Virtualmin on the reimaged server
- Reinstall the selected OS: use your hosting provider’s documented image or reinstall workflow. Verify which disks and snapshots it will affect before confirming.
- Connect to the fresh server: use the access method and administrator account supplied by your provider, then confirm the OS release and architecture match the Virtualmin support matrix.
- Open Virtualmin’s current installation page: use the SSH command and options published there. The installer offers choices such as LAMP or LEMP, a minimal installation, database options, and edition; select what fits your intended setup. Avoid relying on an old command copied from an unrelated guide, because the current command and flags belong to the official page.
- Run the installer and allow it to finish: do not add unrelated package sources or make manual package changes during installation unless the official instructions call for them.

Virtualmin lists third-party repositories, unsupported OS releases, network problems, and package conflicts among common installation trouble sources. Check that the installed OS and architecture are supported, and review the network and package-source changes made before installation.
