To reimage your server for Moodle installation, rebuild the host or operating system, then install or restore Moodle on the rebuilt system. That is different from replacing Moodle’s application files. Before you begin, protect the existing site: back up its code, complete moodledata directory, database, and relevant server configuration, and verify that the backups can be read and restored.
What “reimage” means for a Moodle server
Reimaging normally means reinstalling the server’s operating system or provisioning a replacement host. It can erase the current Moodle installation and other data on that server. Replacing Moodle’s program files alone is not a server reimage, and it does not recreate the operating system, web server, PHP, database services, or their configuration.
There is no universal command sequence for this work. The right process depends on the hosting provider, operating system, database layout, network configuration, and Moodle release. Moodle’s Installing Moodle documentation directs administrators to the requirements for the chosen release and notes that hosted-server settings vary.
Inventory the existing site before rebuilding
Record enough detail to recreate the working environment and identify what must be restored. At minimum, note:

- Moodle release and the location of its code.
- Operating system, web server, PHP version and extensions, and database engine and version.
- The full path to
moodledata, including whether it is on a separate storage volume. - Installed plugins, themes, local code changes, and integrations.
- Scheduled tasks or cron configuration, outbound mail settings, TLS certificates, DNS, and provider-specific services.
Use this inventory to check compatibility before choosing software for the rebuilt host. Requirements are specific to the Moodle release; older figures for PHP, storage, memory, or concurrent users should not be treated as current requirements for a different release.
Back up the site and verify the backups
Schedule a maintenance window and prevent site changes while producing a consistent backup. Moodle’s Backup important data guidance recommends backing up the Moodle code, moodledata, and database, preferably keeping backups at a remote location. These three components belong together: restoring a database from one point in time with files from another can leave courses or user data inconsistent.

- Moodle code: Preserve the program files, locally maintained code, plugins, and themes needed by the site.
moodledata: Back up the complete directory, including uploaded course and user files.- Database: Create a consistent backup using the supported method for the database engine and hosting environment.
- Server configuration: Save relevant web-server and PHP configuration. Moodle’s Windows installation documentation also identifies these settings and non-standard PHP extensions as full-site backup considerations.
- Operational settings: Preserve scheduled tasks, mail relay details, TLS and DNS configuration, and other environment-specific settings you will need to recreate.
Keep at least one copy somewhere other than the server being reimaged. Check that the files and database dump are readable; when practical, rehearse restoring them on a staging host. Do not erase the old installation until you have verified the backup and know how you would restore it. The exact backup commands and consistency requirements depend on your database and provider.

Use your hosting provider’s current process to reinstall the operating system or provision a replacement instance. Reapply the access controls, firewall and network rules, storage mounts, hostname, DNS, and TLS configuration the site requires. The Moodle installation guidance does not establish provider-specific reimage commands, so use your provider’s instructions for those steps rather than applying a generic command sequence.

Before installing server software, open the requirements for the exact Moodle release you intend to run. Choose a compatible PHP version and required extensions, database engine and version, and web server. Then install and configure those components, obtain the Moodle code from the official download source, and follow the release’s installation and environment checks. MoodleDocs states: “You are strongly advised to only obtain the Moodle code from moodle.org.”
If you can upload a compressed archive, Moodle’s installation documentation notes that decompressing it on the server can avoid transferring many individual files. Keep moodledata outside the publicly served web root, and grant the web server the permissions it needs to write there. Check PHP settings relevant to your site’s workload, including upload limits where needed.

Restore Moodle and validate it before reopening access
Restore the matching database and moodledata, then put back compatible Moodle code and configuration. Check ownership and permissions, and use Moodle’s environment checks to catch missing or incompatible server components. A fresh installation is not a reason to point incompatible code at a production database or to overwrite that database with an unrelated copy.

moodledatafiles. - Restore the appropriate Moodle code, local configuration, plugins, and themes compatible with the target release.
- Verify file ownership and permissions, including write access to
moodledata. - Visit the site and inspect Moodle’s environment checks and server logs for errors.
- Test representative course files and user flows, then confirm scheduled tasks and outbound email work.
- Reopen access only after the restored site behaves as expected.
Handle plugin compatibility and Moodle version changes deliberately. If the intention is to upgrade Moodle as part of the rebuild, follow the upgrade procedure for the relevant versions rather than treating a server rebuild as a substitute for an upgrade plan.

Decide whether to self-manage or use hosted Moodle
A rebuild is also a chance to decide who should maintain the environment. Moodle’s installation documentation names MoodleCloud as an option for people who want to avoid installing Moodle themselves. That is an alternative to self-managed installation, not a guarantee that a particular configuration or migration is available.
