A regex DLP layer can stop or redact known sensitive patterns before a request reaches an LLM, but it is not a complete way to find every secret or personal detail. Inspect the entire assembled request—including prior conversation turns—then apply rules that match your policy. Separately control gateway storage, caches, traces, response state, and the upstream provider: filtering a new request does not erase data already retained elsewhere.

How a regex DLP layer fits into an LLM gateway

The gateway is a useful enforcement point because it can inspect outbound API messages before forwarding them. A documented gateway implementation offers sensitive-data rules, custom regex matches, and configurable block, redact, or warn actions; that feature is Enterprise-only in the cited product documentation. These controls can catch known formats, but the documentation does not establish that custom patterns—or any regex layer—detect every sensitive value. LLM Gateway guardrails documentation describes the product’s detection and action options.

Use the gateway as one layer in a broader control design. The exact request path varies by deployment, so confirm which component assembles conversation history, where request bodies are logged or cached, and what the upstream provider receives.

Build the request check in the right order

A practical design processes the content that will actually be sent, not an isolated fragment of user input.

  • FLEXIBLE - Three (3) 1 GbE switched (WAN/LAN/OPT) ports allow you to configure three separate 1 GbE switched ports for upto a gigabit of bi-directional traffic.
  1. Assemble the full outbound request. Include the current message, retained conversation turns, and any tool or system messages that will be forwarded. A user may repeat a secret from an earlier turn in a new request.
  2. Define the sensitive classes. Specify which credential formats must never reach a model and which identifiers your policy requires you to mask. Avoid vague rules such as “remove sensitive data” without defining what counts.
  3. Match and validate. Apply targeted patterns and, where available, built-in or validated detection. Check alternate formats and avoid treating a broad pattern as proof that a match is sensitive.
  4. Take the policy action. Block a prohibited request, redact a value the model need not see, or warn when a person or downstream system can safely decide. Do not forward content until the selected action has been applied.
  5. Account for other copies. Review request logs, caches, traces, stored response state, and provider handling independently of the pre-forwarding filter.

This is an implementation sequence, not a claim that every gateway runs its internal operations in this exact order.

Choose whether to block, redact, or warn

Action Effect on the model call Privacy and usability trade-off
Block The request is rejected rather than sent with the match. Strongest option for credentials that should never be disclosed, but it can interrupt a task when a rule matches benign text.
Redact The request continues with the matched value replaced or removed. Can preserve task usefulness while withholding data; careless redaction can remove context the model needs.
Warn The match is reported or flagged, while forwarding depends on the configured workflow. May support review or monitoring, but a warning alone does not prevent disclosure.

Use a stable placeholder when the model needs to refer to an entity after masking—for example, replace a policy-covered customer identifier with a consistent token such as “CUSTOMER_1” throughout the request. Treat this as a design choice to test, not a guarantee that every task will retain its meaning.

Regex-only matching versus validated detection

Regex is useful when a sensitive value has a recognizable structure, such as a credential class with a known prefix or an identifier with a defined format. It is less reliable when formats vary, values are transformed, or harmless text resembles the pattern. The cited gateway documentation describes PII and secrets detection and validation intended to reduce false positives; that does not prove universal coverage or validate every custom expression.

  • Refer instruction manual for troubleshooting steps.
  • Prefer narrow rules. Match the credential or identifier class your policy actually covers rather than broad sequences of letters or digits.
  • Use built-in validation where available. The documented gateway describes safeguards against interpreting every bare number as a phone number, illustrating why validation can matter.
  • Test evasions and lookalikes. Include representative credential formats, identifier variants, benign lookalikes, Unicode and delimiter changes, multiline content, tool messages, and earlier turns in the conversation.
  • Measure both error types. Track missed detections and false positives; a rule that blocks too broadly can be as operationally disruptive as one that misses a sensitive value.
  • Maintain rules as formats change. Assign an owner and review patterns when credential formats, application inputs, or policy requirements change.

The cited materials do not report test results for a particular deployment. Validate the behavior of your own gateway request path before relying on a rule.

Inspect chat history, not just the newest message

Conversation APIs commonly send a sequence of messages rather than only the latest user entry. If your application retains prior turns, a previously supplied key or identifier may be included again in the next outbound request. Run the DLP check against the fully assembled payload at the point where the gateway can still block or redact it.

Test history-specific cases: a sensitive value in an earlier user turn, a value quoted in a later assistant or tool message, and a value split by formatting or delimiters. Confirm that the gateway inspects the message types your application actually sends.

Separate request filtering from retention and deletion

A pre-forwarding filter can prevent a new request from reaching the model with an unapproved match. It cannot retroactively remove a copy already stored in a gateway log, cache, trace, response state, or provider system. Map each copy and verify its retention period and deletion mechanism rather than assuming one privacy setting covers every store.

For the documented LLM Gateway product, the undated Data Retention documentation, accessed October 5, 2026, says standard organizations default to metadata-only retention, which stores request metadata rather than full payloads. “Retain All Data” stores full request and response payloads; the documentation says stored payloads are automatically cleared after 30 days. Self-hosted deployments need the cleanup job enabled for that deletion to occur.

The same product documentation identifies a separate Responses API exception: response items may be retained for up to 30 days regardless of the organization’s payload-retention level. It documents store: false as the opt-out for those items. Check the API and settings used in your deployment; turning off payload retention should not be treated as proof that all chat history or response state has been cleared.

Storage choice in the documented gateway What it stores Operational consideration
Metadata-only retention (documented default for standard organizations) Request metadata without full payloads Less payload exposure, with less content available for debugging.
“Retain All Data” Full request and response payloads More content for investigation, but greater exposure and deletion obligations; the documented period is 30 days, and self-hosted cleanup must be enabled.
Responses API storage Response items may be stored separately from the organization’s retention level Up to 30 days in the documented product unless the request uses store: false.

Check provider handling and zero-data-retention prerequisites

Gateway retention settings do not establish what an upstream model provider retains or whether it uses request content for training. The LLM Gateway privacy policy, last updated August 20, 2026, states that Customer Data is not used to train models and that request-content retention follows organizational settings. That is the gateway’s policy statement, not a substitute for checking the terms that apply to the provider receiving your request. See the LLM Gateway privacy policy and the provider’s applicable terms.

The gateway’s zero-data-retention documentation describes prerequisites for that product’s setup: metadata-only retention, disabled response caching, and store: false on Responses API calls. Its provider-compliance checks fail closed when provider attributes are unknown. Confirm that these controls are active in the actual route and environment; a label or assumed default is not evidence that every component is covered.
