Choose the exact turntable that fits your records, amplifier and operating preferences—not a drive type in isolation. Rega’s Planar 1 is a belt-drive deck with a fitted moving-magnet cartridge and manual belt repositioning for 33⅓ and 45 rpm. Technics’ SL-1500C is a direct-drive alternative with an included cartridge, built-in phono equalizer, auto-lifter and support for 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm. Those practical differences are more useful buying criteria than assuming one drive system always sounds better.
What “belt drive” and “direct drive” actually describe
The terms identify how the motor turns the platter. In a belt-drive turntable, a separate belt transfers motor rotation to the platter. In a direct-drive design, the platter is driven directly by the motor assembly. They describe a mechanical arrangement, not a guaranteed level of sound quality.
For a buyer, the consequences are operational: how speed is selected, how quickly the platter reaches speed, what maintenance parts are involved, which speeds are available, and what electronics are included. Cartridge alignment, tonearm setup, phono amplification, record condition, isolation and the rest of the playback system also affect the result. The manufacturer information available for the models below documents their designs and specifications, but it does not establish a universal audible winner.
Rega Planar 1 and Technics SL-1500C compared
| Decision point | Rega Planar 1 | Technics SL-1500C |
|---|---|---|
| Drive system | Belt drive | Direct drive; identified as such in Technics’ product material |
| Documented speeds | 33⅓ and 45 rpm; the manual instructs the owner to move the belt between pulley steps | 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm |
| Supplied cartridge | Factory-fitted Carbon moving-magnet cartridge | Included cartridge; exact bundle can vary by region, so verify the local listing |
| Phono electronics | The standard Planar 1 listing does not identify an integrated phono stage | Built-in phono equalizer |
| Tonearm | RB110 | Exact adjustment details are not stated in the cited material; check the local manual and product listing |
| Automation | No automation feature is identified in the cited Planar 1 material | Auto-lifter listed by Technics; the SL-1500C remains a manual turntable |
| Motor information | 24 V low-noise motor | Direct-drive motor; the cited specification does not give a comparable motor-voltage figure |
| Manufacturer speed figures | Rega reports belt-test results rather than a complete-deck figure: 0.253% weighted peak wow/flutter with its standard belt and 0.162% with Advanced EBLT on a Planar 1 | 0.7 seconds from standstill to 33⅓ rpm and 0.025% WRMS wow and flutter, according to the SL-1500C manual |
| Upgrade consideration | Advanced EBLT is listed as standard on Planar 1, 1 Plus, 2, 3 and 6; confirm the deck generation before buying a replacement | Cartridge, phono and setup options depend on the exact regional package; verify before purchase |
The figures in the last two rows are not a head-to-head test. Rega’s values come from the company’s own software and a belt-only comparison on a Planar 1. Technics’ values are manufacturer specifications for the SL-1500C. Different definitions, equipment and test procedures mean they should not be ranked as if they were measured under one protocol.

Which model suits each type of buyer?
Choose the Planar 1 when you want a straightforward Rega system
The Planar 1 arrives with an RB110 tonearm and factory-fitted Carbon moving-magnet cartridge. If your amplifier or receiver already has a phono input, that combination keeps the signal path simple: connect the turntable to the phono input and follow the Rega manual for setup. Its two documented speeds cover the formats most commonly needed by a basic LP and single collection.
Speed changes are a physical task. Rega’s manual tells the owner to move the belt between the 33⅓ and 45 steps of the pulley. That is not a defect; it is simply the operating method you need to accept. If you change speeds often and do not want to lift the platter or handle the belt, a model with electronic speed selection may be more convenient.
Choose the Planar 1 Plus when your amplifier has no phono input
Rega specifically lists an integrated moving-magnet phono stage on the Planar 1 Plus. That distinction belongs to the Plus version, not automatically to every Planar turntable. Check the exact model name and rear-panel connections before ordering. If your amplifier has a line-level input only, the Plus can address that requirement without adding a separate phono box; if your amplifier already has a phono input, compare the available connection options and avoid connecting two phono stages in series.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose the SL-1500C when speed range and built-in facilities matter
The SL-1500C is documented as a direct-drive manual turntable. Technics lists 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm, giving it an additional speed for shellac or other 78-rpm records that the Planar 1 documentation does not provide. It also includes a cartridge, a built-in phono equalizer and an auto-lifter. Those features can reduce the number of separate components and make end-of-side handling less abrupt, while retaining manual cueing and record selection.

The specified 0.7-second start time to 33⅓ rpm is useful if you value quick, repeatable starts. It is a specification from the SL-1500C manual, not an independent laboratory comparison with the Planar 1.
Check your amplifier before comparing turntables
A turntable cartridge produces a low-level phono signal that needs the correct equalization and gain before it reaches a normal line input. In this comparison, the critical question is whether that stage is already in your system or included in the turntable.
- Amplifier with a dedicated phono input: The standard Planar 1’s fitted Carbon moving-magnet cartridge can be used with that input. The SL-1500C’s built-in phono equalizer gives you an option to feed a line-level input, but follow the Technics connection instructions so the signal is not equalized twice.
- Amplifier with only line-level inputs: The Planar 1 Plus is the Rega version that explicitly lists an integrated MM phono stage. The SL-1500C also lists a built-in phono equalizer. Verify the regional model and switch settings before connecting.
- Existing external phono preamplifier: Decide whether you want to use it or the turntable’s internal stage. The relevant choice is the connection mode supported by the exact model, not the brand name alone.
Do not assume that a retailer’s photograph or a similarly named Planar model has the same electronics. Rega distinguishes the Planar 1 Plus, and product bundles can differ by market.

How to handle speed selection and record formats
Planar 1: changing between 33⅓ and 45 rpm
- Stop the platter and remove the record according to the Rega manual’s handling instructions.
- Access the pulley and belt as shown in the manual.
- Move the belt to the pulley step marked 33⅓ or 45, matching the speed printed on your record.
- Reassemble the platter and restart playback.
The important point is that the Planar 1’s speed change is belt-based, not a front-panel electronic selection. If the platter runs at the wrong speed, stop playback and check the belt position before troubleshooting the cartridge or amplifier.

SL-1500C: three documented speeds
Technics lists dedicated operation at 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm. Select the speed required by the record using the controls described in the SL-1500C manual, then confirm that the platter reaches the selected speed before lowering the stylus. The manual’s 0.7-second figure applies to reaching 33⅓ rpm from standstill; it does not promise the same time for every speed or operating condition.
For a collection containing 78-rpm records, the SL-1500C’s documented range is a decisive functional difference. For an LP-only collection, the extra speed may have no value, so give more weight to phono connections, placement and the operating method you prefer.
What the wow-and-flutter numbers do—and do not—tell you
Wow and flutter describe rotational-speed variation. Lower measured variation generally indicates tighter speed control in the stated test, but numbers are meaningful only with their measurement standard and conditions attached.
Rega reports a comparison made with its company test software on a Planar 1 while changing only the belt. It gives these weighted peak figures:

| Belt tested on Planar 1 | Rega’s reported weighted peak wow/flutter |
|---|---|
| Standard belt | 0.253% |
| Advanced EBLT | 0.162% |
| Reference EBLT | 0.075% |
Rega does not state a publication year on the cited belt page. The results are a company belt comparison, not an independent Planar-versus-Technics test. They show the difference Rega measured between its belt options under its conditions; they do not predict a universal audible preference or establish that the Planar 1 beats or loses to the SL-1500C.
Technics specifies 0.025% WRMS wow and flutter for the SL-1500C and a 0.7-second rise to 33⅓ rpm. The manual’s publication year is not stated in the cited material. WRMS and weighted peak values are different reporting conventions, so placing 0.025% beside 0.162% and declaring a winner would be methodologically unsound.
Rega belt compatibility and upgrade decisions
Rega says the Advanced EBLT is standard on the Planar 1, Planar 1 Plus, Planar 2, Planar 3 and Planar 6. Its Reference belt is standard on the Planar 6, Planar 8 and Planar 10, and Rega recommends it for a Planar 3 used with the Neo TT PSU. Confirm the exact deck generation and power-supply combination before purchasing a belt; a belt described for one configuration is not automatically the correct part for another.
If you own a Planar 1, first identify which belt is already installed. Replacing a standard belt with an Advanced EBLT is a specific accessory decision, not a reason to assume that every Rega deck needs an upgrade. Keep the original part until the replacement is confirmed compatible, and use the installation procedure supplied for your model.

Placement, handling and setup checks
Whichever deck you select, setup can overwhelm small specification differences if it is rushed. Use a stable, level support that can carry the turntable and leave room to cue records safely. Keep the signal cables away from power cables where practical, and follow the model’s grounding and phono-output instructions. Do not improvise cartridge wiring or tonearm adjustments when the manual provides a model-specific procedure.
- Cartridge: Confirm that the advertised cartridge is included and factory fitted. The Planar 1 listing names the Carbon moving-magnet cartridge; Technics lists an included cartridge for the SL-1500C, but regional bundles should be checked.
- Tonearm setup: Record the supplied settings before changing anything. If you later install another cartridge, verify its tracking and alignment requirements against the tonearm manual.
- Phono path: Decide whether the amplifier’s phono input, an external preamplifier or the turntable’s internal stage is active. Avoid double equalization.
- Speed: Use a known record and verify the selected speed before diagnosing pitch or cartridge problems.
- End-of-side behavior: The SL-1500C’s listed auto-lifter is a convenience feature. It does not turn the deck into a fully automatic start-and-stop turntable.
- Noise and vibration: Place the deck where footfalls, speakers and shelving movement are least likely to disturb playback. The manufacturer material supplied here does not provide a universal placement rating, so follow the manual for your room and stand.
Sound quality: how to compare without making an unsupported promise
Neither belt drive nor direct drive settles sound quality by itself. The exact cartridge, tonearm setup, phono stage, speakers, record pressing and room all contribute. The available manufacturer documents describe construction and measurements; they do not report a controlled listening comparison that proves one of these models is universally better.
If you can audition both, keep the comparison fair:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Use the same record pressing, or copies known to be closely matched.
- Set each cartridge and tonearm according to its manufacturer instructions.
- Match playback level as closely as possible; a louder source can be mistaken for a better one.
- Use the same amplifier, speakers and listening position.
- Compare the exact models and phono paths you would buy, not a different Planar generation or a different SL-1500C bundle.
- Evaluate practical behavior as well as sound: speed changes, cueing, end-of-side lifting and connection convenience.
If an audition is unavailable, choose from documented requirements rather than online claims that assign a fixed sonic character to an entire drive category.
Buying checklist for the exact model in your country
- Confirm the full model name: Planar 1, Planar 1 Plus or another Planar generation.
- Check whether a phono stage or phono equalizer is built in, and whether it can be bypassed when you use an external stage.
- Verify the supplied cartridge and whether the regional SL-1500C package matches the description you read.
- List the record speeds you actually need. The Planar 1 documentation covers 33⅓ and 45 rpm; the SL-1500C documentation adds 78 rpm.
- Decide whether manual belt repositioning is acceptable for your listening habits.
- Confirm the belt type already fitted to a Rega deck before ordering an Advanced or Reference EBLT.
- Check tonearm adjustment instructions, included accessories, mains voltage and connector layout in the local manual.
- Review local price, stock and warranty terms at the time of purchase. Those details vary by country and are not established by the manufacturer specifications summarized here.
Practical verdict by scenario
| Your situation | More suitable starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You have a phono input, mostly play LPs and want the Rega format | Planar 1 | Fitted Carbon MM cartridge, RB110 tonearm and two-speed belt-drive operation cover that use case. |
| You have only line inputs and want an integrated Rega solution | Planar 1 Plus | Rega explicitly lists an integrated MM phono stage on the Plus version. |
| You need 78 rpm or prefer electronic direct-drive speed control | SL-1500C | Technics documents 33⅓, 45 and 78 rpm operation and direct drive. |
| You want fewer separate phono components | SL-1500C or Planar 1 Plus | Both are documented with built-in phono electronics, subject to the exact model and connection mode. |
| You are deciding solely on claimed sound superiority | Neither on specifications alone | The available evidence does not establish a universal audible winner; audition matched systems when possible. |
In short, select the Planar 1 family for its compact, belt-drive Rega approach and choose the Plus when its integrated MM stage solves a connection problem. Select the SL-1500C when direct-drive operation, 78-rpm capability, built-in phono equalization, the included cartridge or auto-lifter provide value you will actually use. Treat the published speed figures as model-specific specifications, not as proof that one drive method is inherently superior.
