Choose the Rega Planar 6 RS Edition if you want Rega’s classic covered plinth, a supplied smoked dustcover, and the option of an Nd9 or Ania factory-fitted package. Choose the Planar 8 if you prefer its low-mass skeletal plinth, removable one-piece cover, triple-layer glass platter, or broader list of factory cartridge options.

Both use Rega’s RB880 tonearm and share the company’s double-brace approach, Tancast 8 foam-core plinth material, and an external Neo-family power supply. Those shared foundations are substantial, so the documented differences do not establish that one must sound better for every listener. Exact cartridges, bundles, prices, stock, and warranty terms depend on your country and dealer.

The short answer

The RS Edition and Planar 8 are closely related high-end Rega designs rather than completely different platforms. Your decision is mainly about the physical format, platter and belt implementation, factory-fitted cartridge choices, and the package available where you live.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Pick the Planar 6 RS Edition when a conventional plinth and permanently supplied dustcover matter, or when the local offer includes the Nd9 moving-magnet cartridge or Ania moving-coil cartridge you actually want.
  • Pick the Planar 8 when you want the skeletal presentation, lower listed turntable mass, triple-layer glass platter, or access to Nd7, Nd9, Ania Pro, and Apheta 3 factory-fitted choices.
  • Do not choose on an assumed sound-quality hierarchy. The published specifications document construction and options, but no named independent comparative measurement or controlled listening test establishes a universal winner.

Rega describes the RS as adopting engineering features from the next tier Planar 8 while retaining the classic form factor and dustcover. That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independent performance verdict. Rega’s Planar 6 RS Edition page and Planar 8 page are the authoritative references for the listed specifications.

What the two turntables share

The common platform is important when weighing the differences. Rega lists the following on both models:

  • RB880 precision tonearm.
  • Tancast 8 foam-core plinth material.
  • Rega’s double-brace structural approach.
  • An external Neo-family electronic power supply.

Because the arm and broad engineering philosophy are shared, moving from one model to the other is not the same as moving between unrelated designs. The choice should therefore start with the physical and package differences below, not with an assumption that the model number alone guarantees a particular sonic result.

Chassis and dustcover: classic plinth or skeletal design?

Planar 6 RS Edition

The RS uses a Tancast 8 foam-core plinth with high-pressure laminate and a brushed-aluminium skin. It retains the classic Rega outline and comes with a smoked dustcover. The cover is part of the supplied design, so the deck presents as a conventional, enclosed turntable when it is not playing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Planar 8

The Planar 8 places its Tancast 8 foam-core structure between high-pressure laminate layers in a skeletal plinth. It includes a removable, single-piece dustcover. Rega says the skeletal construction is intended to reduce mass; that statement is the company’s engineering rationale rather than independent proof of an audible advantage.

In day-to-day use, this is the most visible difference. The RS is the natural fit for a rack where a full outline and cover are part of the room’s visual language. The Planar 8 suits listeners who like the exposed, minimalist mechanism and do not mind removing the cover before use. Neither choice is inherently better: it is a preference about access, appearance, and how you protect the record and arm between listening sessions.

Platter, belt, pulley and power supply

The drive systems are related but not identical. The following values are the specifications Rega publishes for each model.

Component Planar 6 RS Edition Planar 8
Platter 16 mm dual-layer float-glass platter Super-flywheel-effect triple-layer glass platter
Drive pulley CNC twin-drive pulley Not stated on the Planar 8 product page
Drive belt Two Reference EBLT belts One Reference EBLT belt
External supply Custom-matched Neo MK2 PSU Neo PSU with electronic speed change and fine speed adjustment

The RS combines the dual-layer platter with a twin-drive pulley and two Reference EBLT belts. The Planar 8 uses the triple-layer platter and a single Reference EBLT belt. These are implementation differences, not laboratory evidence that either deck has lower wow, flutter, noise, or better musicality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rega’s separate Reference EBLT drive-belt page says the belt is suitable for all Rega turntables and is highly recommended for Planar 6 and Planar 3 models using the Neo TT PSU. That wording does not make a replacement belt a mandatory upgrade for either the RS Edition or Planar 8; both already list a Reference EBLT belt in their standard drive arrangements.

What the Neo supplies do and do not tell you

Both turntables use an external electronic supply rather than placing the complete motor-control circuitry inside the plinth. The RS is paired with a custom-matched Neo MK2 PSU, while the Planar 8 page identifies a Neo PSU and specifically lists electronic speed change and fine speed adjustment. The product pages do not establish that the MK2 designation makes the RS faster, quieter, or more accurate in every system, so treat the supply difference as a specification and convenience distinction.

Tonearm and factory cartridge packages

Both decks use Rega’s RB880 precision tonearm. The cartridge menu is where the factory packages diverge most clearly, and it can change the total system cost and the phono-stage requirements.

Moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges are different electrical loads and should be matched to a phono stage that supports the chosen type. A factory-fitted cartridge is not a universal guarantee of compatibility with every amplifier or phono input, so check the cartridge and phono-stage specification as a system. Confirm the exact contents of the package offered in your market rather than assuming that every option is stocked everywhere.

Rega’s Nd7 cartridge page separately says the cartridge is offered factory-fitted on both Planar 6 and Planar 8. That supports the Planar 8 Nd7 listing and shows why a dealer’s exact configuration matters: a model page can list several combinations while a particular seller carries only one.

Size, footprint and listed weight

The dimensions are not quoted under identical cover conditions, so do not compare the three numbers as though they were measured in the same state.

Specification Planar 6 RS Edition Planar 8
Turntable dimensions 447 × 117 × 360 mm, lid closed 420 × 125 × 315 mm, with dustcover fitted
Turntable weight 5.4 kg 4.2 kg
Neo PSU dimensions 180 × 150 × 50 mm 180 × 50 × 155 mm

The RS is listed as 5.4 kg and the Planar 8 as 4.2 kg, a 1.2 kg difference in the manufacturers’ stated turntable weights. Rega presents the Planar 8’s skeletal design as a way to reduce mass. Weight alone does not predict sound quality, isolation in a particular rack, or shipping convenience.

For shelf planning, the RS dimensions are given with its lid closed, whereas the Planar 8 dimensions are given with the dustcover fitted. Leave additional room above either deck to lift or remove the cover and to handle records without striking a shelf. The PSU figures are reproduced in the order shown by each product page; because the page ordering differs, verify orientation and cable reach in the manual before designing a tight installation. The RS manual is available from Rega’s download page.

How the documented differences affect your decision

Choose around the cover and furniture first

If your turntable sits in a cabinet or shared living room, the RS’s classic outline and supplied smoked cover may be the practical choice. If the deck will live on an open, stable shelf and you prefer an exposed skeletal form, the Planar 8’s removable cover may be more appealing. Measure the usable shelf, not just the manufacturer’s footprint: record handling, cable routing, and cover movement all need clearance.

Choose the cartridge before comparing small hardware details

A cartridge is the part of the package that most directly determines whether your existing phono input is suitable. Decide whether you want a moving-magnet or moving-coil system, then ask the dealer which exact cartridge is factory-fitted and whether the advertised price includes a phono stage. The RS’s Ania/Fono MC bundle and the Planar 8’s Ania Pro or Apheta 3 listings are not interchangeable assumptions; they are separate configurations.

Do not treat the belt count as a performance ranking

The RS lists two Reference EBLT belts and a CNC twin-drive pulley, while the Planar 8 lists one Reference EBLT belt. That tells you how Rega has implemented each drive system. It does not, by itself, quantify speed stability, motor noise, or the audible result in your room. Those claims would require controlled measurements or a clearly identified comparative test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use weight as a handling fact, not a quality score

The Planar 8’s 4.2 kg listed mass may make it easier to move than the RS at 5.4 kg, but a lighter deck is not automatically a better or worse match for your rack. Check that either model sits level on a rigid, vibration-controlled surface and that the supplied cover can be used without contacting nearby equipment.

What is established about sound and performance?

Rega’s product pages use positive performance language, but those descriptions are manufacturer claims. No named independent comparative measurement or controlled listening test has been established for this comparison. It would therefore be misleading to promise that the Planar 8 always sounds more detailed, that the RS always has a fuller presentation, or that one model has universally superior timing.

The defensible conclusion is narrower: both use the RB880 arm and related Rega engineering, while their plinth, platter, belt, pulley, power-supply, and cartridge configurations differ. Your cartridge, phono stage, record condition, setup, support furniture, and listening priorities will all influence the result. Buy the configuration that solves your actual system needs rather than paying for an assumed sonic hierarchy.

Versions, dates and availability

Product pages carry dated notes that are useful for identifying versions, but they are not promises of current stock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Rega’s timeline describes the Planar 6 RS launch configuration as a brushed-aluminium HPL finish with CNC twin-drive pulley, RB880 tonearm, Nd9 cartridge, and Neo MK2 PSU. See the Rega product timeline.
  • The Planar 8 page says the white finish became available from April 2023.
  • The same page notes a new factory-fitted Nd9 option in a November 2025 update.
  • The RS page includes a July 2026 update describing a P6 RS, Ania, and Fono MC package.

Those dates identify what Rega has documented on its pages; they do not prove that a particular finish or bundle is in stock today. No current, independently verifiable price list or region-specific stock information is established here. Ask a local authorized dealer or distributor for the exact price, lead time, included cartridge, and whether the phono stage is part of the quoted package.

A practical way to choose

  1. Measure your shelf. Compare the stated turntable dimensions, remembering that the RS figure is lid closed and the Planar 8 figure is with its dustcover fitted. Add clearance for opening or removing the cover and for record handling.
  2. Decide on the physical format. Select the RS if the classic plinth and supplied smoked cover fit your room and maintenance habits. Select the Planar 8 if the skeletal plinth and removable cover are intentional preferences.
  3. Match the cartridge to your phono input. Choose between the listed MM and MC packages only after checking that your amplifier or separate phono stage supports the cartridge type and required loading.
  4. Compare the complete local package. Write down the exact cartridge, PSU version, accessories, cover, warranty, delivery terms, and whether setup is included. Do not compare a bare-deck price with a cartridge-and-phono-stage bundle.
  5. Confirm the date-sensitive details. Ask whether the unit is the current revision, which finish is available, and whether the Nd9, Nd7, Ania, Ania Pro, or Apheta 3 option is factory-fitted rather than supplied separately.
  6. Use the manual for installation constraints. Before placing an order, check the RS manual and the corresponding Planar 8 documentation for handling, leveling, cable routing, and power-supply placement requirements.

Questions to put to the dealer

  • Which exact cartridge is installed on the offered turntable?
  • Is the quoted price for the turntable alone, or does it include the cartridge and a phono stage?
  • For an MC cartridge, which phono-stage input and loading options are supplied or recommended?
  • Is the listed finish and package physically in stock, and what is the expected delivery date?
  • What warranty applies in your country, and who handles service?
  • Are the dimensions being quoted with the cover fitted, closed, or removed?

Warranty terms can vary by country. Rega directs customers to a retailer or distributor for details, so obtain the written local terms before purchase rather than assuming another market’s coverage applies.

Bottom line

The Planar 6 RS Edition is the better fit for a buyer who values Rega’s classic covered form and wants the RS-specific Nd9 or Ania packages, including the documented Ania/Fono MC option. The Planar 8 is the better fit for someone who deliberately wants the skeletal design, lower listed mass, triple-layer platter, or wider factory-cartridge menu.

Both are built around the RB880 tonearm and related Rega engineering. Treat the platter, belt, pulley, PSU, and cartridge differences as concrete design and system-matching choices—not as proof that one turntable is universally superior. Compare the exact local package and warranty with a dealer before committing.
