Enhancement Stones—sometimes called “refining stones” by players—are the ordinary material for increasing an equipment item’s enhancement level in Aion 2. They are normally spent with Kina or Kinah. They are not interchangeable with Breakthrough Stones, slot-specific Enhancement Scrolls, Manastones, Spirit Stones, Theostones, or Arcana resources: each belongs to a different progression system.
The practical rule is simple: use Enhancement Stones when you want the number on the item to rise, Breakthrough Stones when you have reached the normal cap, socket stones when you want to change attached stats, and Arcana materials when you are improving Arcana properties. Names, caps, rates and even slot requirements can change by region and patch, so confirm the current in-client description before committing scarce materials. The terminology and system boundaries below follow the AION 2 Wiki guide, GEGEBASE’s equipment-enhancing guide and AION 2 Help’s equipment-system overview.
What “refining stone” means in Aion 2
“Refining Stone” is an informal player label. The guides reviewed for Aion 2 use Enhancement Stone for the basic item consumed when raising a weapon, armor piece or accessory’s enhancement level. An enhancement attempt also requires Kina/Kinah, with the spelling depending on the game’s localization. The stone and currency pay for the same attempt, but they are different resources: one is an item and the other is money.

Treating every upgrade item as a “refining stone” is the quickest way to spend the wrong resource on the wrong screen.

The AION 2 Wiki also uses a useful high-level distinction: some resources upgrade the item as a whole, while others change properties attached to it. Its detailed figures are drawn from Korean and Taiwanese service and may not match a global build, so use the categories as a planning aid rather than as a promise about your server’s exact numbers.

The roles in this table are summarized from the three cited guides. The AION 2 Wiki specifically warns that detailed system rules from Korean and Taiwanese service may not represent the global implementation, while the other guides’ slot and failure descriptions should likewise be checked against your current patch.
How ordinary enhancement works
1. Select the item you intend to keep
Open the equipment’s enhancement interface and inspect the item’s current level, required materials and currency. Do this before moving stones from storage. If the item is likely to be replaced soon, the same stone and Kina/Kinah may produce more value on a longer-lived weapon or armor piece.
2. Check the material line, not just the upgrade button
A normal attempt generally lists an Enhancement Stone and a Kina/Kinah fee. If the panel names an Enhancement Scroll, the item is in a slot with an additional requirement. Do not assume that owning stones alone makes the attempt possible. Amulets and belts are examples cited by the guides, but the exact list is not established as universal across versions.
3. Confirm the level and cap shown by your client
Enhancement levels and caps are live-system values. A guide may describe a cap or rate from one service region while your client uses another. Read the current panel, tooltip and patch notes available for your region before spending a large stockpile.

4. Attempt the enhancement and record the result
For each attempt, the interface should show the materials and currency that will be consumed. Capture the item’s level before and after if you are testing a new patch, especially when the result can fail. This makes it easier to distinguish a failed upgrade from a missing-material error without relying on old guides.
What each material is for
Enhancement Stones: the direct level increase
Enhancement Stones are the default choice when the goal is a higher enhancement number on a weapon, armor piece or accessory. The guides describe them as the basic item-level material and pair them with Kina/Kinah. They do not replace a slot-specific scroll, and they do not perform socket or Arcana operations.

That is a prioritization rule, not a universal law: class scaling, item quality, set bonuses, defensive needs, inheritance or transfer rules, and how soon you expect to replace the item can change the best target.
Breakthrough Stones: extending the ceiling
A Breakthrough Stone is used when ordinary enhancement has reached the item’s regular cap and the system offers a further progression step. It is therefore a cap material. Spending one before the client says the item is eligible is not a way to speed up ordinary levels, and substituting it for Enhancement Stones will not solve a missing normal-attempt requirement.
Enhancement Scrolls: slot-specific companions
Some equipment slots require an Enhancement Scroll in addition to the ordinary stone and currency. The cited guides mention amulets and belts as examples. Because the affected slots can differ by version, open the item’s own enhancement panel rather than relying on a universal list. A scroll is a conditional companion item, not a second name for an Enhancement Stone.

Manastones and Spirit Stones: socketed properties
Manastones are described as socketed items that add stats to weapons and armor. Spirit Stones are presented in the fan-wiki taxonomy as the accessory counterpart. Installing or changing one affects the item’s attached properties; it does not raise the enhancement level displayed by the ordinary enhancement system. Socket investments can also have different recovery rules from enhancement stones, so check the extraction prompt before dismantling an item.

Theostones: a separate equipment system
Guides list Theostones in a separate equipment-system tab rather than as ordinary enhancement materials. The sources do not establish one universal statement about which gear slots Theostones affect in every regional client. Use the Theostone interface and current item tooltip to determine eligibility instead of assuming that a Theostone can be applied to a weapon, armor or accessory simply because it is an upgrade item.
Mysterious and Pure Crystals: Arcana-only functions
Mysterious Crystals are described as refining Arcana. Pure Crystals lock one Arcana property. Both belong to Arcana progression and property management, not to the ordinary equipment-enhancement level. If the desired change is an Arcana trait, opening the equipment enhancement panel and buying more Enhancement Stones will not address it; use the Arcana interface and the crystal named there.
Kina or Kinah: the currency half of the attempt
Guides spell the currency as Kina or Kinah. Follow the spelling and amount shown by your client. It is consumed as the money component of an enhancement attempt and should be budgeted separately from stones. A successful material farm can still leave you unable to enhance if the currency bill is unaffordable.
Failure behavior: what is known and what is not
GEGEBASE describes its “current Global” reference as guaranteeing enhancement through +10. In that guide’s description, attempts above +10 can fail; a failed attempt consumes the required materials, leaves the equipment intact and does not lower its enhancement level. This is a guide-authored claim, not independently confirmed official documentation in the cited material. Do not treat +10, the failure rate or the no-downgrade rule as a universal promise for every region or patch.

Before a high-level attempt, read the confirmation dialog for the current item. The dialog is the authoritative place to see whether a failure consumes the stone, scroll and currency, whether the item can downgrade, and whether any protection or additional material is available. If the dialog differs from an older guide, follow the client and consult the applicable patch notes.
How to obtain and recover materials
Activity rewards
The equipment-system guide says dungeon and expedition activities can provide Enhancement Stones or equipment. This makes routine progression content a practical source of stones even when you are not specifically farming an enhancement stage. The exact reward table is version- and region-dependent, so inspect the activity’s current reward preview instead of assuming that every dungeon has the same drop.
Extraction or dismantling
The cited guides identify extraction or dismantling as a way to recover Enhancement Stones from equipment. They also warn that Kina/Kinah and socketed investments are not necessarily returned. Because this is a volatile mechanic, open the extraction or dismantling confirmation for the exact item and read its return list before accepting. A recovery screen that returns stones is not proof that it refunds the currency or Manastone/Spirit Stone investment.
Replacing gear without wasting the budget
When an upgrade target is temporary, compare the remaining useful life of the item with the unreimbursed cost of the attempt. A stone recovered later may not offset the Kina/Kinah or socket value that disappears. If your client supports inheritance or transfer, inspect the destination, eligibility and loss rules before enhancing the source item; the guides describe these systems but do not establish one cross-region implementation.

A decision framework for spending scarce resources
- Identify the desired outcome. Choose “higher enhancement level,” “past the cap,” “new socketed stat,” “Arcana refinement,” or “Arcana property lock.” The answer selects the material family.
- Check the item slot and eligibility. Look for a required Enhancement Scroll, a socket type, a Theostone tab or an Arcana-only screen. If the client does not list the material, do not force a substitute.
- Price the complete attempt. Count the Enhancement Stone or other item, the Kina/Kinah fee and any scroll. For socket or Arcana work, include the property material and the chance that the result is not worth keeping.
- Estimate replacement timing. Favor a long-lived item over a piece scheduled for replacement, unless a transfer or inheritance path clearly preserves the investment.
- Read the failure and recovery text. Confirm what is consumed on failure and what extraction returns. Use the current confirmation dialog, not a remembered rule from another service.
- Spend in stages. Make ordinary enhancements first, reserve Breakthrough Stones for an eligible cap extension, and keep socket or Arcana resources separate from the ordinary enhancement budget.
Worked examples
You want a stronger weapon before the next dungeon
Open the weapon’s enhancement panel. If it requests an Enhancement Stone and Kina/Kinah, those are the relevant resources. If the weapon has reached the displayed cap, look for the Breakthrough requirement instead of repeatedly trying to use ordinary stones. If the panel reports a failure risk, decide whether the weapon will remain equipped long enough to justify consuming the materials.

Your amulet will not enhance even though you have stones
Check whether the slot also requires an Enhancement Scroll. The guides use amulets and belts as examples of gear that can need a scroll. The missing scroll is a slot requirement, not evidence that your Enhancement Stones are defective or that a Breakthrough Stone is needed.
You want more attributes from armor
If the intended change is a socketed stat, inspect the Manastone/socket system rather than the enhancement-level button. For an accessory, the client may use Spirit Stone terminology. Read the socket and extraction warnings because those investments may not be refunded when the item is dismantled.
You are rerolling an Arcana property
Use the Arcana interface. A Mysterious Crystal is described for Arcana refinement, while a Pure Crystal locks one Arcana property. Neither is the ordinary material for raising a weapon, armor or accessory enhancement number.
Regional, patch and terminology checks
The strongest limitation on cross-guide comparisons is version authority. The AION 2 Wiki labels its detailed figures as based on Korean and Taiwanese service and notes that global behavior may differ. GEGEBASE presents the +10 guarantee and failure behavior as current Global guidance, but the retrieved guide does not link official documentation for those rules. AION 2 Help describes the equipment system and resource roles without establishing a single worldwide cap, rate or reward table.
For a reliable decision, verify five things in the client running on your account:
- The exact localized name: Enhancement Stone, Kina or Kinah, and any translated equivalents.
- The current ordinary enhancement cap and the point at which Breakthrough Stones become necessary.
- Whether the selected slot requires an Enhancement Scroll.
- What a failed attempt consumes and whether the item can downgrade.
- What extraction or dismantling returns, including whether currency and socket investments are lost.
Patch notes for your region should take precedence over an undated or overseas guide. If a tooltip, confirmation dialog and guide disagree, record the client wording and use that rule for the transaction you are about to make.
Quick checklist before clicking Enhance
- Is the goal an enhancement level, a cap extension, a socketed stat, a Theostone effect or an Arcana property?
- Does the panel list an Enhancement Stone, Breakthrough Stone, Enhancement Scroll, Manastone, Spirit Stone, Mysterious Crystal or Pure Crystal?
- Do you have enough Kina/Kinah for the full attempt?
- Will this item remain useful, or is it about to be replaced?
- What exactly happens on failure in this client?
- What will extraction or dismantling return if you later retire the item?
Use Enhancement Stones for ordinary level increases, reserve Breakthrough Stones for cap progression, treat scrolls as slot-specific companions, and keep socket and Arcana resources in their own systems. That separation prevents the most expensive mistake in Aion 2’s upgrade loop: paying the right cost for the wrong kind of improvement.
