The right refillable photo printer depends first on the largest print you need, then on how much you value photo color, document features, and low-cost bottled refills. For 13 × 19-inch prints, the Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 is the clearest fit; for letter-size output, consider the ET-8500. The Canon PIXMA G620/G650 is a photo-focused standard-size alternative, while the Epson ET-18100 and Canon imagePROGRAF TC-21M are broader-format options that warrant closer specification checks before buying.
This is a use-case shortlist, not a controlled head-to-head ranking: the available evidence combines official Epson specifications with independent product comparisons, and does not establish equivalent photo testing for all five models.
Best refillable ink photo printers by use case
| Printer | Best suited to | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Canon PIXMA G620 / G650 | Photo-focused standard-size printing | Six dye inks and strong output on coated photo paper, according to TechRadar. The reviewer reports fewer everyday conveniences than many all-in-ones. The G620/G650 names are reported as regional variants; verify the exact model sold in your market. TechRadar |
| Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8500 | Letter-size photo printing with scanning | Six-color Claria ET Premium ink system; maximum paper size 8.5 × 11 inches. RTINGS describes it as essentially the same printer as the ET-8550, but with a smaller maximum print size. Epson · RTINGS |
| Epson EcoTank Photo ET-8550 | Wide-format photo printing up to 13 × 19 inches | Six-color Claria ET Premium ink, borderless output up to 13 × 19 inches, a flatbed scanner, and detailed, vivid prints in RTINGS testing. RTINGS also notes potential oversaturation and less accurate color than some alternatives. Epson · RTINGS |
| Epson EcoTank ET-18100 | A3+ wide-format photo printing | TechRadar includes it as a wide-format refillable-tank photo printer. The available comparison does not establish detailed ink, media, or feature specifications, so confirm those for the exact regional model before purchase. TechRadar |
| Canon imagePROGRAF TC-21M | Large-format and roll-media work | TechRadar lists refillable tank ink and support for 24-inch rolls. The available comparison does not establish how its photo quality compares with dedicated photo printers. TechRadar |
Start with the print size you need
For prints up to letter size: Epson ET-8500
The ET-8500 handles paper up to 8.5 × 11 inches. It shares the ET-8550’s six-color Claria ET Premium system, so the main distinction for photo buyers is size rather than a different ink family. Its flatbed scanner’s maximum scan size is 8.5 × 11.7 inches, according to RTINGS. RTINGS

For prints up to 13 × 19 inches: Epson ET-8550
Choose the ET-8550 when the ability to print larger borderless photos or artwork is a real requirement. Epson specifies borderless output up to 13 × 19 inches. RTINGS reports a maximum scan size of 8.5 × 14 inches. The larger print capability is the practical reason to pay more than for the ET-8500; RTINGS reports that the ET-8550 costs more, but current prices vary and should be checked at purchase. For larger formats beyond typical desktop photo printing
The ET-18100 is described as an A3+ wide-format tank printer, while the TC-21M is listed for 24-inch roll media. Those categories can suit different creative or production workflows, but the comparison evidence does not establish exact supported media dimensions beyond those descriptions, detailed ink configurations, or comparative photo quality. Check the manufacturer’s current regional specifications and intended media before treating either as a dedicated photo-printer substitute. TechRadar
How their photo output and ink systems differ
Epson’s six-color Photo system
The ET-8500 and ET-8550 use Epson’s six-color Claria ET Premium system. Along with the other colors, Epson identifies Gray and Photo Black in the set and attributes photo and black-and-white rendering to this ink system. Epson states that borderless 4 × 6-inch prints can take as little as 15 seconds; that is a manufacturer speed claim, and actual results depend on conditions. Epson

In RTINGS’ ET-8550 testing, prints were detailed and saturated, with a broad color gamut. That vividness can be a drawback when exact color matching matters: RTINGS notes a tendency to oversaturate and lower color accuracy than some alternatives. For color-critical work, look for independent color-accuracy results and consider the full workflow—calibrated display, color-management settings, and paper profiles—rather than equating more vivid output with greater fidelity. Epson’s product information notes support for its Print Layout software, but compatibility with a particular device or workflow should be confirmed. RTINGS · Epson
Canon’s six-dye photo approach
TechRadar describes the PIXMA G620/G650 as using six dye-based inks, including red and gray, and praises its photo results on coated paper. That makes it a candidate when photo output and bottled refills take priority over all-in-one convenience. The comparison reports a 100-sheet rear tray, slow monochrome printing, manual rather than automatic duplexing, and no touchscreen, memory-card slot, or Ethernet. These are reviewer-reported details; confirm the current specification for the exact market model. TechRadar

What refillable ink changes about running costs
Refillable tanks can reduce the need to replace cartridges frequently, but a low ink cost alone does not determine the cost of making photos. Your actual total depends on how many prints you make, the paper you choose, ink use for each image, and whether the printer spends much of its time producing documents.
- Epson’s 2021 launch announcement estimated about 4 cents per 4 × 6-inch photo for the ET-8500/ET-8550 versus 40 cents with cartridges. These are Epson’s published estimates from that announcement, not a current universal price comparison; the comparison basis and your paper and workload matter. Epson (2021)
- Epson’s ET-8550 specification sheet estimates up to 6,700 black pages and 6,200 color pages from replacement bottles. These are document-yield estimates, not promised photo counts. Epson
- Before comparing printers, estimate your own monthly mix of photos and documents, then include compatible photo paper and any other media you routinely use. Do not treat manufacturer page-yield figures as photo yield.
Epson describes its bottle system this way: “Epson EcoTank Photo printers feature exclusive EcoFit™ bottle technology, designed for easy, mess-free refills with no guesswork.” That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent assessment of refill experience. Epson

Photo longevity and warranty claims
Epson cites Wilhelm Imaging Research testing for more than 75 years of color and more than 100 years of black-and-white print life on specified media under stated display conditions. Epson also says actual image stability varies and does not guarantee longevity, so these figures should not be read as a lifetime guarantee for every paper, storage condition, or print. Epson

Checklist before choosing
- Print width: Select ET-8550 for up to 13 × 19 inches; ET-8500 is limited to 8.5 × 11 inches. Confirm media compatibility for any less common size or stock.
- Color needs: Vivid prints may be desirable for display, but evaluate independent color-accuracy testing if matching artwork or client colors is important.
- Photo versus documents: The G620/G650 comparison reports slower monochrome output and manual duplexing; consider whether everyday document convenience matters.
- Scanning: Both Epson models have a flatbed scanner, with different maximum scan sizes reported by RTINGS. Check whether those dimensions cover your originals.
- Recurring cost: Calculate expected photo and document volume together with the price of the correct paper; do not compare bottle and cartridge claims without matching assumptions.
- Model and market: Verify regional naming and current specifications for the G620/G650, ET-18100, and TC-21M, especially if you need a specific ink set, connectivity option, or media format.
