To reduce visible pixelation in Photoshop, start with the highest-resolution original, then choose a resize method that matches the job. Turning up resolution alone does not add image detail: with Resample off, Photoshop changes the relationship between pixel dimensions and print size, not the pixels themselves. When you enlarge with Resample on, Photoshop estimates or generates new pixels, so inspect the result at its intended screen or print size.

First identify what needs to change

Pixelation usually becomes noticeable when an image has too few pixels for the size at which it is displayed or printed. The key distinction in Photoshop’s Image Size and resampling controls is between pixel dimensions, physical size, and resolution:

  • Pixel dimensions are the image’s actual width and height in pixels. They matter directly for screens and digital output.
  • Physical dimensions are the intended print width and height.
  • Resolution, often shown as pixels per inch (PPI), describes how densely pixels are assigned to a physical print size.

If the image must have different pixel dimensions, resampling is involved. If you only need a different print size while retaining the same pixels, change the size-resolution relationship without resampling.

Choose the right approach for the job

Goal Starting point What to expect
Change print size without changing the image pixels Turn off Resample in Image Size Changes the relationship between print dimensions and resolution; it creates no image detail. Adobe’s Image Size guide.
Enlarge a photograph Try Preserve Details 2.0; compare Generative Upscale if available Conventional interpolation estimates pixels. Generative methods can create or alter apparent detail. Adobe’s resampling options and Generative Upscale guide.
Reduce pixel dimensions Try Bicubic Sharper Adobe lists it as an option for reduction; check the result for unwanted sharpening or softness. Adobe’s resampling options.
Resize pixel art or hard-edged graphics Use Nearest Neighbor Preserves crisp edges and a blocky pixel-art appearance rather than smoothing them. Adobe’s resampling options.
Prepare an image for a screen or website Set the target pixel dimensions Pixel dimensions determine the available image data; changing PPI metadata alone does not add screen detail. Adobe’s pixel-dimensions guide.

Resize carefully in Image Size

  1. Keep the original. Duplicate the layer or save a separate working copy so you can return to the source instead of repeatedly resizing an already resampled image.
  2. Open Image > Image Size. Check the width and height in pixels, not only the PPI or inch values. Adobe’s Resample instructions explain the dialog’s controls.
  3. For a print-size change only, deselect Resample. Adjust the physical dimensions or resolution as needed. The pixel width and height remain the same.
  4. For new pixel dimensions, select Resample. Enter the target width or height and preserve the aspect ratio unless you deliberately want to stretch the image. Photoshop’s resizing guidance explains that resampling changes pixel dimensions.
  5. Select a method suited to the image and resize direction. Use Preserve Details 2.0 as a starting point for enlargement, Bicubic Sharper for reduction, and Nearest Neighbor for pixel art or sharp-edged graphics. For Preserve Details 2.0, adjust Reduce Noise only as needed; it is not a substitute for missing source detail.
  6. Inspect at the intended output size. Check faces, text, edges, and fine texture at the display or print scale where the image will be used. If the result is poor, return to the original and try another method rather than resizing the resized copy again.

When Generative Upscale is available

For a larger enlargement, Photoshop may offer Image > Generative Upscale. Adobe’s guide, updated May 20, 2026, documents a workflow from File > Open, then Image > Generative Upscale, where you choose 2x or 4x, select a model, and create the result in a new document. Availability and limits can vary by Photoshop version and account.

Adobe describes three model approaches and output limits in that guide:

  • Firefly Upscaler: restores low-resolution images up to 6144 × 6144 pixels.
  • Topaz Gigapixel: focuses on preserving existing detail up to 56 megapixels and is listed as requiring a premium subscription.
  • Topaz Bloom: adds creative detail up to 9 megapixels and is listed as requiring a premium subscription.

Those limits and descriptions are Adobe-published feature specifications, not independent quality comparisons. Because one model is specifically described as adding creative detail, generated output may not faithfully preserve every element of the source. Review important faces, lettering, and fine details before using the image.

Why pixelation may remain

Upsampling can make an image larger and may make its edges look smoother, but it cannot reliably recover details that were never captured. Standard interpolation estimates intermediate pixel values; generative tools may produce plausible-looking detail that differs from the original. Adobe’s resizing and resampling guidance explains the effect of changing pixel dimensions.

  • Find the original file or a larger source before upscaling, if possible.
  • Do not expect changing PPI alone to improve screen clarity or add pixels.
  • Avoid repeated resizing; return to the original when testing another method.
  • Judge the result at its intended output size, since extreme zoom can make normal pixel structure look worse than it will in use.

For crisp pixel art and graphics

Pixelation is not always an artifact to remove. Pixel art, icons, and hard-edged graphics may rely on distinct square pixels and sharp boundaries. Adobe identifies Nearest Neighbor for pixel art and sharp-edged graphics because it preserves those hard edges instead of blending them as a photographic smoothing method would. Choose the resampling method according to the visual style you want to keep, not simply to make every image look smoother.
